[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

That was the plan, but it's almost instinctive for Brie to toss herself into the fray. If she happens upon a newbie in particular need of help, she may offer to straighten them out. She's also not opposed to helping you complete your mission, as long as it gets you to practice your magic.]

a: break it down like an enzyme

[Dirk stares at the line of beach huts as he contemplates the mission he was given. "Break down one of the empty beach huts." There are so many questions for him in this. How is he going to come to fully understand a beach hut? Should he instead try to understand elements of it and attack it in that manner? Exactly how is something as complicated as this supposed to come down?

But only one question is said out loud.]

Ok, but how the fuck am I supposed to be sure the hut's empty?

[People may not have enough stuff to leave around. Someone might have refrained from writing their name on it but still claimed it. Does he need to write a notification that demolishment is incoming and wait until someone complains???]

b: two wrongs make a right

[Later, Dirk can be found sitting on the beaches, a little distance away. In front of him, he has a collection of random junk, the kind you might have gotten out of the bag trails that were left for them. A pair of novelty glasses, an ugly plastic plate, an old sponge.

Dirk stands, pulls his sword out from its sheathe (still annoyed that's a thing) and slices it through the items.

Then he sits back down again and stares at them. And stares. So much staring. Riveting training effort.]

[ There's staring going on over here too, from Minato as he watches Dirk slice through the items and... sit. And stare. And stare. And stare.

Eventually, he gives in and walks up to Dirk. ]

...Is something supposed to happen?

Waver hadn't been sure what to make of his assignment. Manipulating smoke into the answers to three short-answer questions, provided by other newbies. The first part made sense, learn to get a better handle on things, but the rest? How was he supposed to gather questions? Conduct an informal survey?

A
The first part was straight forward. He had to conjure the smoke, and be able to do it seamlessly. Waver found himself an area downwind from everyone else, and positioned himself with his back towards the wind.

Quietly, he tried to figure out the mechanism. A wiggle of his fingers. A twitch of his nose. A stomp on the ground. The thought of smoke itself. Words, short and direct or else a bullshited lengthy incantation.

It is the last one that sends him the ability, and from the tips of Waver's fingers, clouds of thick, white smoke begin to form. They stream off, dissipating into the air, and when Waver imagines the clouds stopping, they do so.

"So that's the trick?" he muttered out loud. In the back of his mind, it also occurred to him that he had not activated any of his magic circuits.

So he stood there in his little section, practically a fog machine turning itself on and off.

With the mechanism down pat after a half an hour's experimenting, the next part was manipulation. Waver suspected that it might be a whole body thing, but he also knew no one wanted a sudden cloud of smoke in their face.

So he kept it simple. He wiggled a finger and the thin whisps of smoke coming forward wiggled too. Wiggling both hands created a larger wave. There was a logic to it.

"Right," he said to himself, and as he did so, Waver put both of his hands in front of him and turned to his left. He didn't know if the smoke was moving with him because of the wind, because of his hands, or because he was also trying to will it into doing so, but it moved all the same.

There was a moment of silence, and Waver's hands hung at his side. Not visible, since he now faced away from the others, was the grin on his face. He was doing something that his lineage in magecraft wouldn't allow for. That? That was exhilarating.

With the mechanics figured out, Waver sat himself down in the sand to do the actual assignment. As much as he could figure out the wording, he was supposed to make this stuff into exact shapes and then control it. Puppet shows came to mind.

He tried to make basic shapes first. Circle. Squares. Pentagons. Flat first, then three-dimensional. It took more time than Waver liked to get those functional, but by five o'clock, he could manage it.

"Now how am I supposed to get the damn questions I'm supposed to answer?"

Some might say it was fate that brought them together again. However, that was hardly the case...it was mostly that Yang was doing another circuit of the beach to check out the huts and see who was occupying which ones. However, she'd been noticing smoke for some time and had finally gotten around to investigating it -- thinking one of the huts might actually be on fire and wouldn't that be neat to make explode.

But, no, it was just smoke signals being generated by Waver. She was coming up from behind him so he might not have noticed her yet. Although he wouldn't have to wait long for her to make her presence known, "What kind of questions do you need answered?"

[ Minato had been practicing little by little these past few days how to use his power, learning what sorts of objects he can shrink down into colorful glass beads and that he should probably make a concentrated effort to remember what's what, or at least sort them out before he's left with a counterproductive mess.

Brie had given him three things to transform: a hut, one of her swords, and a pair of pants. Easy enough, although he's tempted to just keep the sword as is; it's shinier and less bloody than his old one, lost in the jumble of beads he keeps in his pocket. The other two, though... ]

[ It's the middle of the afternoon when Minato returns to the huts, knocking on the doors each in turn, testing the handle to see if it pulls open and if anybody is inside. ]

Anybody home...?

[ Hopefully not, because who would give him permission to mess with their home without the promise of being able to get it back?

[ Part two of the mission. laughs, Minato just looks tired, sitting there on the sand, watching people practice, beckoning whoever wanders by and doesn't turn around the moment they hear his request: ]

[ He would use his own pants but like. He has to show Brie and he's just. Really tired. Who has extra pants he can take and potentially never give back. ]

[okay. okay he has to face it sooner or later. deep down he'd known what he'd ended up with, the most inappropriate possible power to work with in place of a seraph's usual abilities. he hadn't tried to use it yet. he hadn't tried talking about it yet. but now it's here, on paper, for everyone to see. and he's being asked to try and use it, also for everyone to see.

he shuts his eyes, opens them again. 'turn into a dragon' is still listed there. nope.]

[one way or another he gets convinced, probably, and that is when shit gets hilarious. he can turn into a dragon just fine, he discovers. it's even painless, in a disconcerting sort of way, and he's glad to find that it doesn't seem to affect his mind the way regular dragonization might.

on the other hand, the limitation is that he has to learn to operate the body before he can go fly anyone anywhere. and the results? the results are mixed.

which is to say, at some point during the training day, you might find yourself in the path of a roaring, haphazardly flying blue-and-white blur, frantically flapping his wings and telepathically screeching to the heavens:]

[ i ) That's the sound of experimentation and while that might be good for anyone with even half a braincell, for Chiaki it's a very, very poor idea. He leans down as if he's about to tie his show, but instead he's touching both of his legs with his fingertips, a brief magic little glow emanating for his fingertips, and then he stands.

It turns into a jump even though he doesn't mean to, sending him right up into the air, following by his half-confused, half-excited yell - ] I seeeeeeee?!

ii ) When he's back on the ground, he's still trying to get his bearings with his enhanced speed - but it's sending him careening forward much, much faster than he anticipated. Right on course for impacting against a tree, but that should be fine, right? He reaches his hands out to catch himself.

His fingertips come into contact with the tree trunk first, the same magic little glow, and then - ]

Guagh?!

[ - Chiaki runs into it way too fast, especially considering that this tree is now as solid as a boulder.

[Magic lessons, hm? Well. She doesn't need any of that. She's sort of got this magic thing down. But all the children are learning and practicing and training and it's very exciting. A bunch of budding witches~ It really was a lifetime ago since she was a budding witch. Magic isn't easy. If it was everyone would be born a witch.

Of course, Yuuko also expects that this will be incredibly entertaining to watch. Explosions, lightning, fireworks maybe? It'll be fun! And of course, some of the children might need help. All magic is different but there is a certain way to go about spell casting. Clear mind so on and so forth. That she can probably assist with. Also it sounds like some were assigned with tasks? She can help with that too.

The witch has found herself a chair and perched herself under a shady palm tree with a clear view of all the magical happenings. A wine glass in one hand and a book in the other and a very cool beach look~ This is just another day of relaxing on the shore, this time she just has a magical little show on top of it all.

[ Well then, Yuuko, prepare to watch as a young boy attempts his mission, which happens to be floating his little ball of light around the base camp without catching anything on fire with it. Sounds simple, but he doesn't have much control over its floating yet, and keeping it consistently active is also proving to be a bit difficult. It certainly takes more concentration than whacking things with a Keyblade, at least. He's used magic before, but they were easier for him and came in one burst rather than something he has to keep live and control over. This one just feels different.

But if she's keeping her attention on him at all, she'll probably be able to notice how concentrated he is on his white little ball floating in front of him, trying to keep it steady and ignoring everything around him ... to the point of him completely tripping over a log and landing with his face in the ground.

Luckily, one of his hands stayed up in the air, keeping the ball afloat. He hasn't failed quite yet then?! And he looks up to notice it still there. ] Hey! I've still got it — [ Before it sparks out of existence. And he sighs. ] Time to start over.

[ dave's mission is, by his standards, pretty dull. "draw a backpack, a bag of chips and a crossbow into existence". ok, easy enough. granted, he doesn't do it exactly well, but that matters less about certain easier items. the backpack is kind of shoddy but servicable; the bag of chips is easier, being simple to draw, although the doritos might be off-brand.

the crossbow is fairly terrible because he's never handled a fucking crossbow in his life, and the details are kind of...vague. the firing mechanism doesn't work because he doesn't really know how a crossbow firing mechanism works or what it looks like, so...yeah.

he gave up on the three items (though he drew a variety of chips-in-bags if anyone cares to take them and try them) and is now methodically working through other random objects. swords of varying quality; shuriken shaped like card suits (suitarangs); a brain; dozens of little sculptures of his shitty webcomic; three attempts at a keyboard before he went "fuck it" and moved onto his current task:

cookies.

there is literally no rhyme or reason to his actions, is there. dave eyes the plate of cookies he has produced via drawing dubiously. ]

A'ight, there's basically no way to know if these are oatmeal or, like, oatmeal raisin. Or some other type of cookie. I think maybe I wasn't thinkin' about it proper. But you can have one anyway if you want?

[So. He can do this. This isn't the first time he's been assigned missions and told to figure things out. The mission doesn't surprise him at all. Instead, he nods to himself and sets his eyes on the group around him, determined to find the three people he needs and convince them to let him borrow their items to create something...different.]

[Yeah okay you really do not want to approach him? For anyone who met John in the evening on the first day it's easy to see that he's far more chipper and alert than he was. Feeling marginally better and not straying too far from his friends, John can be found sitting on the sand and mulling over his task.

Fusion. Alchemizing? He can do that. That's not even a big deal. The trouble, of course, is that he doesn't know if he can ever learn to control how things fuse. That'll be the fun part.

So anyone who approaches will find him wandering the beach, looking for anything he can pick up. Upon being spotted, though, he'll give a grin.]

[Later he can be found seated on the ground with a pile of things at his side. In his hands is a Chinese fingertrap-type object and he's shifting through an array of other objects. After a moment, he picks up what looks like a butter knife and he holds it up to the toy, narrowing his eyes in concentration before the two objects fuse together...and become a silver cylinder with dull blades sticking out on each end, heavy in his hand and leaving John to frown in discontent.]

Shit.

Ugh. This is going to take forever to narrow down. Maybe I should just pick one at random.

[She notices someone passing by, someone she hadn't seen yet.]

Hey! Which of those huts did you pick?

B.Talk the Talk
[Yang was 90% confident she had narrowed down the huts. She wondered why they were so expendable that THIS was her test. At least she was trying to make sure there was no one inside and knocked politely on the door.]

C. Here Comes the Boom

[Yang is now 95% sure that the hut she's standing in front of is empty, with no one occupying it now or ever. And so it's time to test what this ability of hers can really do. She cracked the knuckles of her left hand and smirked.]

At any rate, he's pacing up and down the beach, scrutinizing anyone who walks past--including you, if you happen to be nearby--with a distinctly tortured air.

Oh, and his hands are tucked into his sleeves, out of sight. It's almost as though someone really, really does not want to be touching another person right now.

[ orihime's mission is fairly straightforward: create three different types of food and getting other newbies to eat them. she did get okuyasu to eat her boar meat dish, and he seemed to have liked it! so, she's very confident that she can get this done!

plus, this is a chance to get her to experiment with other food styles as well, dishes that she'd wanted to make but never had the time to.

little does she realize that there's one limitation to her magic: the food dishes will always taste absolutely disgusting.

but...how can you turn down free food? how can you turn down this smiling face in front of you when orihime spots you nearby? she looks so delighted to see you, after all! ]

B) What do you mean we have LIMITS?

[....and the limitations of her powers are going to hit her hard. The more she brings up the barriers, the less effective they get and the more tired she becomes.]

[She seems a little frustrated at the situation. Recharging for a while would usually work, but what if she didn't have time in the heat of a fight or the middle of trying to protect someone?

[To be honest, Chiaki's running around with... his excess energy - though he does stop when he overhears her, turning his head toward the sound and offering a grin. He's bad at talking to girls, yes, but also he seems to forget... who he's talking to... when he goes into senpai mood.]

[Joshua was off to find the first victim of his little game. Or well, mission. He is to alter the perceptions of three people in any manner he wants. And he has many manners he can do so. But he likes to tailor things personally to people, that's what more in line with his tastes. So he approaches you, smile on his face and hands behind his back. He seems friendly, at least, on the surface, but all he is doing is simply getting ready to set up.]

"Hello there. Are you involved in this training excursion too?"

B.

[It's later in the day, the sun is starting to go down. His eyes are fixated on the sky, somewhat glazed over. He's seeing what he can do with his magic. Namely, what he can do to himself. He raises his hand towards the sky, and it's a stark white. He's in his composer form. He's not actually, but he is making himself think he is. It's a small, meaningless gesture, yet it gives him a certain sense of comfort. Of course, also realizing that he is not immune to his own magic is, slightly terrifying in a way. Namely, with one question.

[What if he loses control?

[He knows it can happen, and it has happened to over people, and so if he lost it, he would likely end up the victim if no one else was around to occupy the position. And that was all the more reason why he had to control himself as strongly as he was. Well, it didn't matter. He jumps to his feet, and he keeps up the illusion. But as he's beginning to leave, he notices someone else. He could have sworn he was alone here. Maybe he was starting to lose control. He shouts across the beach:]

"Hey... you aren't an illusion, are you?" [Yep. What a great way to start off Josh.]

Dance, Magic, Dance

[Her mission was to dance for people. Well, then! Who was she to say no? But something about what was written said there was a little more to her fancy footwork than what was previously capable. During her days at the Ul'dahn cabaret, she always -did- have a way to entice with the legs or even a skirt ruffle.

She kicked off her boots and let her toes wiggle in the sand. Though she could dance in the things, there was everything freeing about the warm grit over one's skin. Besides, you couldn't have a good shimmy if you weren't comfortable.

Madhuri threw a hip left, smiled, then threw a hip right. Good, she was still limber after being tossed into another world. A well-oiled machine, she was. But as she began to step light and tread away from her boots, she began to enjoy the sunshine and the sea salt breeze. Never the shy sort, she had no issue beginning a dance amid the crowds practicing their techniques. The air grew heady, yet light as a feather, and any who strayed eyes her way might feel a little hint of distraction. Whether it's 'what the hell is she doing' or '...wait, what was I doing?' is anyone's guess, but the longer the eyes linger, the worse the sensation gets.

For some, it went beyond simple distraction. For some, it seemed the horned woman had a damn good idea to enjoy the sunshine, singing to help her dance along. They may feel so inclined as to step right up and join in because it was such a nice day... isn't it? Of course it is~]

[Now usually Rottytops enjoy swinging her hips at idle, but when this strange dragon-lady came with a smile and hip movement that reminded her of someone from back home. But once she heard the music she couldn't help it.]

[With such a nice reminder of home, the zombie girl stepped right to the side of the dragon lady and wiggled just like her friend used to, giggling the whole time.]

[Moon is having a staring contest with an empty barrel. She has to fill three of them, but so far she hasn't managed anything. She's holding her hands out very determinedly, but so far, no good.]

B; Return of Piglet
[Moon has moved to the nearest source of water. She's not going to cheat, but she's thinking maybe she could just move the water instead of trying to make it. And it is easier. She's gotten two barrels filled!

Then she sees the piglet. It's definitely the one she saw before--she can see the little bruise where she struck it with her Ultra Ball. She leaps up--and then it squeals and runs off.]

Oh no--come back! [Moon makes to follow the piglet, but then one of the full barrels starts to tip over. She grabs for it, but water's really heavy when there's a lot of it. She's sliding along the bank as the barrel tips over more and more.] No, don't fall over! [She can't even get her Pokeballs to get her Pokemon to help this way.]

C; Pokemon Parade
[Eventually, Moon has managed to fill all of the barrels. Of course, getting them back to camp is another matter--but she has helpers! Her Lycanroc is carrying one, Salazzle another, and Tsareena a third. Any time water sloshes out of the barrel, Moon catches at least most of it, moving it through the air back into the barrels.

So don't worry about this little group of monsters walking around, it's fine.]

[Ryoji's going to worry about the little group of monsters, but it's mostly because them parading along like that is kind of adorable. He doesn't even notice Moon at first, addressing them.]

[Okay. So magic teleportation. Well, if she was honest she heard of zombies being able to do that. Though in Sequin Land usually once a zombie sunk into and out of the ground it was to lie in wait for an unsuspecting meatsack to come by for them to ambush. The moving around thing? That's more the stuff of ghosts and the Cacklers. Still, the thought intriqued her.]

[Getting the hang of it, though, was taking a bit of time, and the biggest reason for that was focus. The first time she started to sink she was so excited she popped back up immediately out of the ground. Since she had been getting more and more proficient until she finally was able to get all of the way...]

B -- The Thing Below

[So after the hiccup of the first little teleport, the zombie girl was starting to get the hang of things. Sure it kicks up dirt everywhere, and she's starting to look more like a hot mess, but the potential of zipping around was too appealing.]

[That and there was the challenge that she had to do. Now ordinarily she would hate to do work but when the request was "Scare Three People with Your Teleport Powers," who was she to deny?]

[So with that in mind, she'll be going around from place to place suddenly appearing behind unsuspecting victims people, popping up behind them and giving them a hearty but disarming.]

[Madoka's mission today is to heal one other person who injures themselves while attempting their own mission. when she first arrived, she had scanned the crowd, a bit overwhelmed — should she just ... run around making sure everyone's all right? that might wear her out pretty quickly, though. and she's no good to anyone if she's too exhausted to heal.]

[so, a few errands first. using a notebook and set of pens she had in her hut and a large stick, she has proudly constructed and stuck a sign in the sand:]

["FIRST AID."]

[there's also a little drawing of herself next to it. you know, so people know right away who the person healing is!]

[unfortunately, should more than one person come for aid, she's going to run into trouble — namely, once her healing magic is spent, no matter how much she flattens her palms against the injury, no matter how much she flails, nothing will happen. and sadly, she'll have to shut her service down.]

B: But she's not giving up yet

[if her magic is completely spent, then she's going to have to find a workaround — she can't stand by and do nothing in a life-or-death situation, right? so, what was once panic has morphed into determination — there's a change to her sign, as well:]

[there's been a few days to play around with newfound abilities, so he isn't too surprised when he reads the piece of paper with his mission on it, the helpful added scrawl of 'soul dives' drawing his eyes back to the page over and over again. somewhere along the line he pulled together an inkling of exactly what his power is. it sounds straightforward enough. but it also sounds potentially personal, and his hesitation is apparent as he stares at his paper.

but, hey, he won't get any help unless he asks. after a beat, he sends out a telepathic ping.]

I'll need some volunteers for magic training, if anyone's up for it.

[sometime after wrangling at least two people into helping, there's an unconscious (sleeping) body on the ground and a random slightly ajar door standing conspicuously next to said unconscious body. everyone involved looks mildly alarmed except for the sleeping person, who actually looks totally fine.]

...if you step in through his door you find yourself inside a smallish, round room with smooth, pale-grey stone walls; there's some hints of carving at the bottom, but they're largely obscured by age. the floor is silvery and ripples like liquid when you step onto it, though it holds up perfectly well under your feet. strange reflections move under it, too, like the shadows of tree branches and a snakelike, shadowy ripple of scales. since Sorey just did a very basic beginner dive there's no additional items in the room.

a perfectly awake, faintly translucent Mikleo is sitting in the middle of the floor, though, looking cross.]

[Hibiki would never miss a training session even though he has been practicing alone ever since he picked a blank journal as one of the starter supplies. A few pages are hovering around him, but when he tries to add another one, all sheets are suddenly all over the place as he loses control of his power.

One of them may end up in someone's face, oops. Whether they're just a bystander or are training earnestly, Hibiki will approach them and bow.]

[Once the pages are back in the journal (paper restoration is something he finds easier, it seems), Hibiki decides that it's time for a break. Except not really, because during the so-called break, he's making paper crows. Surrounded by a few of these birds, some of them floating in the air, he realizes that someone has taken note of him and what he's been doing.]

[Tamaki isn't totally sure how to use his power yet, but it seems pretty straight forward. He just has to find someone who is sick and... heal them, somehow. He's hoping that when he tries, it will just come to him naturally.

So that leads to Tamaki running around in the early afternoon, approaching people with a somewhat frantic look on his face.]

[ Mitsuki's been trying to hide the symptoms because he doesn't want his friends or anybody else to worry about him, but leave it to Tamaki to find him. He's sitting under a tree, hoping the shade would help him feel better. So far, it hasn't. ]

I had to, it pinched me and I had to show it who was boss... I think it's having its last laugh now, though.
