[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

[He gives her a nod to confirm it.] You don't always have to. In this case, though, it's around an area where people are likely to try to move it a lot just in habit. Having something there to set it and keep it in place prevents someone from fuckin' it up further on accident.

[well, all she has handy is the stick she used to make her sign, so Madoka lets go of Dirk's hand and grabs the sign — she carefully measures the stick against her own finger, and tries to snap off the straightest piece she can.]

[she'll need something to hold it all together, too, won't she? hmmm... ah!]

[wordlessly, she pulls the ribbons out of her hair, and, as her hair falls to her shoulders, she briefly runs her fingers through it, in an attempt to keep it out of her eyes.]

I'm going to give this a try — tell me if it hurts too much, okay?

I will, but I've got a pretty high pain tolerance. It's why I set myself up for this.

[He holds his hand out so she can test it out. He's calm, at least, which he hopes will help her feel less nervous.]

Good improvising, by the way.

[for the first time since he broke his finger, Madoka smiles. it's not a big one, and it still looks rather uncertain, but it's something.]

Thank you. You've been a good teacher.

[she takes Dirk's hand again. actually setting the broken bone will prove more difficult for her than finding the break and then finding something to use as a splint, so. she'll do her best to be gentle as she tries to maneuver everything back as it should be.]

[He doesn't know if he believes that about himself, but he does trust in Madoka's good will. He offers her a few quiet corrections, but mostly he lets her guide herself. When she has it set, he nods.]

You've got it.

[she nods, and, perhaps agonizingly slowly, she maneuvers the stick into place and starts tying everything together with the ribbons.]

[if she weren't trying to set a broken bone right now, Madoka would almost think she was crafting. maybe that's why, instead of tying a normal knot, she unconsciously defaults to tying the ribbon into a bow. sorry about that, Dirk.]

[it's by no means perfect. he should probably reset it himself later. but, at least there's a fairly good chance his finger will heal correctly.]

I just realized I don't even know your name. [she says as she lets go of his hand, and offers him another smile.]

I'm Madoka.

Dirk Strider. [He doesn't smile back, but he isn't prone to smiles; this is a nod of affirmation, He holds his hand out to look at the splint.]

That's a nice bow. And a pretty good job setting it for your first go. The bow is a nice touch.

[He likes it, honestly.]

Good first effort, Madoka, and good job keeping your head cool during it.

[that's quite all right, Madoka has enough smiles for the both of them. and then some.]

[even though this lesson in first aid did not go at all how she expected, she's placated by the fact that Dirk seems to know what he's doing. and, well, she has to admit, the experience absolutely helped more than just taking notes. so she's thankful.]

Um. Hopefully we won't be treating too many injuries here, though.

[While they talk, Dirk slowly works his destruction magic at his broken finger. It can be harder for that, since he doesn't break too much.]

It's hard to tell without getting a better sense of what worldhopping will be like. [Dirk doesn't sugarcoat or tend towards optimism. He prefers to take things head on as accurately as he can.] Preparing for the possibility is better than being caught off guard for it.
