[OPENING] magical training log

Who: Brie, whichever newbies want to show up.
Where: The beach.
When: Day 4
Open/Closed: OTA

[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

It is going about as well as you would think, yeah. But a lot of people seem to be mostly curious about it which helps. Seeing is believing and all that. It works out as long as they aren't too attached to whatever they give me since I don't think my power allows for a reversal, which was true at home, too.

[ "True at home"? ]

You could do something like this back home, too?

With an Alchemiter, sure. [There's a shrug.] It's a machine that was part of the game that we could use to combine stuff, but now I guess I can do it here without the machine. It's a pretty shitty exchange for taking away my real abilities, but it could be worse. I could be stuck with something really dumb like fast-growing fingernails or whatever.

Hah! [ For some reason, Qrow finds the image of that amusing. ] Yup. Can't lie, that would be pretty dumb. Then again, it's far from the worst.

[ Try being the embodiment of bad luck and misfortune. ]

I heard someone here can summon refrigerators.

[Sorry about your semblance, buddy. Even if John knows nothing. Instead, all he can do is lift both eyebrows because:]

Why the fuck would they think that's useful. [Bluntly. He's starting to question Brie and Genette and Qri a little more.] I mean unless they are full of food or whoever can summon them can throw them at enemies, maybe, but okay you're right. That is pretty bad. [However, now that Qrow's brought it up he can't help but wonder.] Does yours fall on the better side or the worse side?

Well, I can tell you it's also a magic that I didn't need.

[ Unlike John, however, Qrow didn't have this same power back home. You don't need teleportation when you can turn into a bird. ]

At the end of the day, it's all about how you use it. Unless you learn how to make things better than a plastic ninja star, some would still prefer to have the refrigerator guy in battle. At least you can drop them on someone's head, or use it as cover from gunfire.

[ Not everything is combat oriented, Qrow... ]

I didn't need this magic either. They could have at least offered something similar to what I had. [On the other hand his expression tugs into a frown because that sounds like a challenge?]

I have enough combat skills that I don't need to fuse a shield. But I can only create stuff based on what I already have, so if you want to see something better I would need something besides a shoehorn. [He's mostly pointing that out, but yeah. That's a good point.]
