[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

[ There's staring going on over here too, from Minato as he watches Dirk slice through the items and... sit. And stare. And stare. And stare.

Eventually, he gives in and walks up to Dirk. ]

...Is something supposed to happen?

[splinten]

[Dirk notes the staring, and these two compatriots in staring continue to look at their respective stare-targets. It's very impressive. When Minato approaches, though, Dirk allows his concentration to break. There isn't much good in just continuing to focus on it. He has to find new ways to do this.]

The brokenness is supposed to get destroyed.

What.

[ He has no idea what that means. ]

...Is that more broken, or the opposite of broken. Fixing?

[splinten]

Fixing.

[GOOD JOB FOLLOWING THE DOUBLE NEGATIVE.]

I can destroy abstract elements of things. In theory.

[He glances up.] Yours?

[Minato's power, he means. Dirk is tired of staring at a broken thing and not being able to fix it; he wants to turn his attention elsewhere.]

[p_mortem]

[ In theory. Destroying destruction sounds useful if ever Dirk can understand it, and maybe explain to Minato in turn, but his own power is something easier to demonstrate.

Wordlessly, he stoops to pick up one half of the broken glasses, holding the rim out in front of his eye like a monocle and— it disappears all at once, turned into a bead that falls into Minato's sleeve.

His power is party tricks. ]

[splinten]

[A pause.]

You can turn things into beads. [And... lose them in his sleeve??] Is that for ease of transportation.

[p_mortem]

[ No, the losing them in his sleeve was the trick— it's stupid and he'll leave stupid magic tricks up to p4 protag instead. ]

For the most part, yeah. A complicated way to carry things around. I have a hut stored somewhere, from earlier today. Figured we'd be camping in the woods sometime and would need shelter.

[splinten]

[You tried, Minato.]

It seems relatively simple. Sort of like a sylladex that exists in physical space, and also which probably requires jumping through fewer hoops to access your items.

[Well.]

How do you get things back out.

[p_mortem]

[ Whatever a sylladex is, it already sounds more trouble than how Minato understands how his powers work: direct access, so long as he knows what's what. As it is, he can shake the bead out of his sleeve now and let it roll back onto his hand, and doesn't even have to try very hard to envision the glasses because he's got the other half lying on the ground right there as reference—-

a little blink of light, and the half pair of glasses sits on his hand again. ]

[splinten]

[Oh, woah.]

That's convenient. Are you the only one who can pull things out of a bead?

[He'd assume so, which is at once nice for Minato and a good security feature, and sort of annoying for Dirk, who misses his damn sylladex.]

[p_mortem]

No idea.

[ The glasses shrink back down to a bead again, and he tosses it underhand to Dirk. ]

Can you destroy being turned into a bead?

[splinten]

[Dirk catches it in his palm easily.]

Theoretically, I probably can. Practically, I'd need to 'fully conceptualize' being turned into a bead.

[He isn't entirely sure if he can do that. He focuses on the bead, trying to reach that, trying to destroy it—

—poof. The bead is gone now, totally destroyed.]

We should be careful what I practice that on.

[p_mortem]

[ Goodbye bead... It's not a reversal of Minato's magic as much as it is a complete destruction, but it's impressive to see first hand. ]

What homework did you get from Brie?

[splinten]

[Poor, sad bead. Your service will be missed.]

Destroying one of the unused cabins. [He glances back towards them.] Honestly, it feels like a waste.

[p_mortem]

[ At least Brie specified "unused" ] ...Mine was to turn one into a bead. At least I can turn it back.

[ Eventually. He hasn't done it yet, and he's going to hold onto it forever. ]

It probably doesn't matter though. We're supposed to be leaving soon, I think.

[splinten]

[Minato stop hoarding huts.]

Yeah, but we'll eventually return. [He shrugs.] Maybe we'll get materials to build better places to stay, or maybe we won't get new people to account for. Who knows.

[p_mortem]

[ no ]

There's nothing really here to come back to... What if we just kept going forward? If we work hard, Qri won't have to bring in new people.

[splinten]

Genette and Brie likely have been working hard. It may be a question of sheer numbers.

[Still. He considers that, looking around at where they are.]

Maybe. I wouldn't object to that.

[p_mortem]

[ They're a right little army here, a lot larger than the number of people Minato is used to working with. ]

...I was thinking of taking everything: all the huts, that mansion too. But if people arrive while we're gone, then that wouldn't be right. I guess we'll come back to see who turns up. If anybody.

[splinten]

[He considers it. It isn't actually a bad idea, and with Minato's ability he could.]

You could ask Brie or Genette if they know if people will arrive.

What about turning the island into one bead?

[p_mortem]

I'll ask.

[ He looks at the ground as if seriously considering it, but ]

I can't turn living things. There's something anchoring us to the island if we walk off the edge at the beach, but if I take the island away...

[ SHRUGS they fall into space and suffocate I guess ]

[splinten]

[Ah.]

That would suck, yeah.

[Oh huh]

Does it shove any living things outside of the bead? That could have interesting applications for getting rid of infestations or sterilizing things.

[Bacteria are, after all, alive.]

I've never tried...

[ Mostly he tried to stuff crabs into his pockets and just got pinched for his efforts ]

How would you test that?

[splinten]

You could put a crab or whatever inside something, like a box, then try to turn the box into a bead.

[Either it doesn't work, or the crab gets ejected.]

[p_mortem]

[ That sort of practice sounds more fruitful than "turn X, Y, and Z into beads" so

alright, time to go crab hunting. ]

They were in the bathhouse, right? There were buckets in there too, which would work as a box.
