[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

I'm actually pretty damn good at 'em. [ he catches the rope easy before it hits the ground, ftr ] I just need to tie myself aboard, or like, do we wanna make a more harnessy thing?

If you don't mind just tying yourself on, that'll do it. I want to see about getting something more lasting -- maybe leather from the boar hides? -- before going to that much trouble.

[he's slightly wobbly about it, but he lowers himself to the sand a bit, wings fanned out on either side of him, so it's easier for Dave to climb up.]

[ and dave will climb aboard! somewhat gracefully, actually, when he starts tying knots it seems pretty quick and competent? ]

Right. Brace yourself; depending how the wind is, this might be a bumpy ride.

[tenses under him like a huge cat, wings spreading wide and cupping the air (that's so weird, that is literally two limbs more than he should have --), and leaps

it's indeed kind of a shaky flight, but after his five million mishaps of the afternoon, he's able to labor up into the air steadily, without doing any accidental barrel rolls. well...for now.]

[ as directed, dave braces himself. he doesn't seem to have any trouble staying on? he has the balance of an actually graceful cat, and he did tie the knots well.

he switches to telepathy because he can't shout over the wind without, well. having to shout? ]

You'd be great for helpin' map the island like this.

It does make for a good view! I've never been up this high, seeing through the trees is a pain, but everything else -- ack!

[another strong, errant gust catches them; he flares out his wings to angle against it, and succeeds in not capsizing, but it does send them doing a kind of aerial U-turn away from the mountain peak.]

Don't sweat it. I missed flyin' and I don't mind takin' the scenic route.

[as fraught and annoying as his power is, it's true that it is exhilarating to fly like this; he lets himself relax just a little bit, beating up slightly higher to get above the air current.]

I wonder how high we can go? It's probably not a good idea to go too far up, if it's anything like over the cliffs, but probably worth testing sometime.

Yeah, as long as you don't go so high I can't breathe. I don't think my space-breathin' works currently...though I'd bet you can go higher than you can take people.

I have no idea! I definitely can't breathe in space in my usual shape, though. Let's stick to the mountain for now, maybe we can get you some kind of air . . . thing? for next time.

I could probably draw up like a...scuba divin' tank of air? I know how those work so it should be possible...

I have no idea what scuba is but, cautiously, that sounds like a good idea.

[they're getting closer to the peak finally! hell yes]

It's divin' underwater, and taking a tank of air with you so you don't drown?

That. . .makes sense, but I've never really been in any water deep enough to go diving in, which is probably why it's not ringing any bells. Okay, land, land, where to land us . . .

[the mood of his tone's definitely picked up; he swivels his head a couple of times until he can focus on what Dave's looking at, then starts to descend, doing another slow inward spiral to avoid another awkward crash like earlier.

You don't usually get views this clear on the mountains . . . I feel a little sorry that those worms from the other night have moved on. Can you imagine what this would have looked like that night?

[he finally comes in for a landing, claws scrabbling ungainly on the rock; there's a couple of uncertain moments, but he gets them safely on the ledge.]

Those worms sent out drug mist, so I'm not sure I feel totally sorry for them?

I don't mean the drug mist! I walked right into that stuff, it was strange. I just mean...imagine the view? All those lights.

Okay, you ain't wrong there. It'd be like sittin' right in the middle of the Northern Lights.

Northern Lights...my friends and I went north once, but there was too much trouble brewing there, too many snowstorms. Does the sky there really look like that sometimes...?
