Who: Brie, whichever newbies want to show up.

When: Day 4

[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

What he said, pretty much. This is very new, though, so perhaps there are other applications too...?

I wonder if all our powers have some tie to what we are and what we can normally do.

I would if I was in an RPG adventure, but I take your point. Still, that wouldn't hurt the owner.

Maybe you can do repairs, if you can do damage. That's what people keep insisting, at the least.

Mine is connected to what I used to do, same with a friend of mine. The powers of a few other people I know, too. Is this soul thing related to what you used to do, Sorey?

This is different, there's no purification involved here.

Although, maybe if it was someone else's soul there would be something to purify. Or, not purify, but...repair, like you said. If that's the intention then there are some similarities.

I'm guessing that even though we can't feel malevolence, it might still reflect inside a soul. So maybe you could purify it . . . it really depends what shows up? That's the risk of this, you definitely can't predict what someone's soul is going to look like or how hospitable it will be to outside interference, even if it's to help.

[the otter makes a faint buzzing noise under Dirk's hand, a mildly purry vibration rather than a noise. the bird . . . decides to try and bite all of Sorey's fingers instead if he's going to be like that]

It seems to vary. The power granted to me has absolutely nothing to do with water, which is what I normally use, but has a relation to what I am. Perhaps it would be a good thing to poll people about?

It'd be helpful to get a sense of all our powers before we travel together to a new world anyway.

For the record, I have no damn idea what 'purification' and 'malevolence' mean in this context. It does not sound figurative.

Malevolence is the impurity generated by humans, by conflict and negativity. Purification is, well, the power to deal with that. Sorey's still got it.

[Huh.]

So like... a sort of spiritual and emotional cleansing. And he can't do it the way he normally does, but potentially he could do it by diving into people's souls.

If he can survive their birds.

But, yes, that's why I think it's related. Sorey can sometimes see into the cause of malevolence when he cures it, so this seems like . . . an expanded version?

It has the potential to be an expanded version of purification, if there's something wrong to begin with. Otherwise it's just like what we're doing now.

[Sorey holds the judgey thing in his hands and feels very judged.]

Do you think you've got a better idea of what to expect from this now, at least?

[Dirk looks at Sorey curiously. He's honestly very interested in how Sorey will be approaching this.]

[his eyes go back to the toad for a moment before drifting around the room and giving a nod.]

Mm...Yeah, it's just something that has to be handled with care. I'll need to practice it a little before getting the hang of it completely, but I've got a better grasp of the concept behind it.

[he flashes them both a big goofy smile]

What are friends for?

[yes that includes you too Dirk. light moves through the water around them both; there's a sensation of calm and of . . . blessing? strange.]

[That is strange. Dirk doesn't say anything for a moment, completely fascinated by what's happening. He pets the otter absently as he tries to follow the light and understand it.]

[Sorey pets the toad and leans back comfortably against the wall; the sensation of a blessing is a little more familiar to him, but this is all still new and he has no problem soaking it in while he can.

he'd probably stay in here a while if there wasn't a time limit]

[it's a light of general wellbeing and calm, a sense extended to you that the flow of the world will be all right in the end . . . both of them also feel that normally power like that could be extended outside the walls of this room, but it's trapped inside at the moment, unable to influence the world around it even a little.

speaking of the room, it is indeed fading out around them as Sorey's power finishes running its course. still and all, maybe they'll both carry a little of it with them when they leave.]
