[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

A: Triage

[Madoka's mission today is to heal one other person who injures themselves while attempting their own mission. when she first arrived, she had scanned the crowd, a bit overwhelmed — should she just ... run around making sure everyone's all right? that might wear her out pretty quickly, though. and she's no good to anyone if she's too exhausted to heal.]

[so, a few errands first. using a notebook and set of pens she had in her hut and a large stick, she has proudly constructed and stuck a sign in the sand:]

["FIRST AID."]

[there's also a little drawing of herself next to it. you know, so people know right away who the person healing is!]

[unfortunately, should more than one person come for aid, she's going to run into trouble — namely, once her healing magic is spent, no matter how much she flattens her palms against the injury, no matter how much she flails, nothing will happen. and sadly, she'll have to shut her service down.]

B: But she's not giving up yet

[if her magic is completely spent, then she's going to have to find a workaround — she can't stand by and do nothing in a life-or-death situation, right? so, what was once panic has morphed into determination — there's a change to her sign, as well:]

[Madoka's sitting next to the sign, furiously scribbling in her notebook. surely someone here is a doctor or a nurse, or maybe even grabbed a book about medicine earlier. she has so many questions.]

[He pauses because he wonders what the fuck happened that turned 'first aid' into 'help wanted.']

Are you okay.

[His voice is monotonous and expression calm, but he's Concerned, Madoka.]

[sadly, what happened is not all that exciting. but Madoka looks a bit defeated all the same.]

Oh, I'm fine! I just. Ran out of magic.

I was hoping someone could help me heal people. Or, maybe teach me a bit about first aid?

[splinten]

[He wonders if he can destroy 'running out of magic.' It seems like something theoretically possible, but the concept is intangible enough that he doesn't want to try it on a whim and accidentally destroy something inside of her.]

First aid I can do. How much do you know?

[that sounds like something that could go either really well for Madoka, or it could do something like cause her Soul Gem to explode spectacularly.]

[and, well, though she can't really hide her sheepishness, the note of determination in her voice easily overshadows it.]

Well, I can put on a bandaid and help if someone has a fever. And I was the nurse's aid for my class at school, but I never really did much more than walk people to the nurse's office. So ... I'm good at moral support?

[everyone has to start somewhere.]

A bedside manner is a good underpinning. [He means it entirely seriously. Dirk is good at fixing broken bones and stitching up cuts, but he's terrible at being supportive and calming and kind. He considers it for a moment.]

Cuts, bruises, concussions, broken bones, sprains, dislocations. Where do you want to start?

[she thinks about that for a moment, lightly tapping her pen against the notebook. ]

Broken bones, maybe? I'm not sure ... which one do you think would be the most useful to know how to take care of here?

Probably broken bones and open wounds. Broken bones are easiest if we stick to simple ones first.

[Madoka probably doesn't need to worry about how to deal with bone jutting out of flesh yet.]

The basic idea is to set the bones if they're off, then use something structured to keep them in the right place to heal.

[Madoka has certainly Seen Some Things, but yeah, she might panic a bit if she came across someone with that sort of injury right now.]

[she busily scribbles everything down as Dirk talks.]

What do you have to do to set them? Do you just ... [trying really hard not to grimace at the thought.] move it around until it feels right?

Sort of. It's best to get a good feel for it.

[Hm. Well, it helped him when Dave did it, so—]

I can heal injuries on myself if I'm familiar with them, and broken bones are in that class. So don't worry about this.

[He promptly breaks his index finger by bending it badly. He doesn't even flinch at the pain, and instead holds his hand out to Madoka.]

Try setting it.

[oh my god.]

[she was expecting to just be taking a lot of notes, to be honest. and she. needs a minute to recompose herself, hands covering her mouth and her eyes darting between Dirk's face and his hand.]

You — [okay. Madoka, you can do this. she has to learn to do this, if her magic is going to be as limited as it is. everyone here needs her to be able to do this.]

[tentatively, she reaches out and takes Dirk's hand in her own, gently running her thumb along the broken finger. he did say he could fix this, right?]

Are you ... this doesn't hurt too badly, does it?

[splinten]

Yeah, it's not bad at all.

[He remains super chill about all of this, letting her take her time with it.]

When you press at the part that's broken, it'll be a spike of pain. That's helpful if it's difficult to identify the right place.

You can try gently feeling along and I'll tell you when you got it.

All right.

[the shock still hasn't worn off, but Madoka makes an honest effort in trying to find the break, and desperately hoping she's not causing him too much pain. not that she'd be able to tell if she was, just by watching his face.]

Um ... Thank you for helping me. [though she can't help but wish it weren't at the expense of his hand. but she'd feel even worse if she panicked — then Dirk would have injured himself for nothing.]

It's no problem.

[And he seems honest enough about that. The pain isn't a big deal, and he can fix it. It's important for Madoka to be able to help with these sorts of things so she can learn for others, or for unexpected circumstances. He doesn't mind being the one who helps her learn. He thinks he is best suited for that.]

—There. That's it. Most people'll react, but I'm good. You can get a feel for how there's sort of a swell around that spot. It'll obscure the injury a bit, but it'll also help you check out the problem.

You're right. It feels — [definitely not how fingers normally feel. setting it might be a different story, but at least Madoka seems to be able to pinpoint the general area of a broken bone. it's a start.]

[still holding Dirk's hand in hers, she glances around them for a brief moment.]

I should find something sturdy then, right? Before I try to ... set it.

[Chiaki is - not a doctor or a nurse. To be honest, he might be more in need of a doctor or a nurse than anything else?! He's been doing some nonsense today. His clothes appear crinkled from where he pulled himself out of the sea, his hair a mess of sand, and he's actually... kinda bruised up.

But he's not here for healing?!]

Excuse me, excuse me! Did you need help? A hero has arrived...!

[how is he not embarrassed]

[it sort of makes sense?? if everybody here has a power of some sort ... plus she's also met a lot of people who were very powerful back home. it wouldn't be surprising at all if Chiaki is actually a hero. Madoka just might buy it! sob.]

[but, first things first.]

Well, I — wait, are you all right? You look like you're hurt ...

[madoka please don't encourage him - ]

Ah, a bit... but it's nothing more than proof that I've done my work for today? If anything, it might make me look more manly...!

[though he just laughs at that, amused at himself]

Please don't mind me - I promise I'm still in well enough condition to provide assistance should you need it! Name the task and it shall be done.

[see all of that just sounds heroic to her. he's leaving a good first impression!]

Well ... I actually used up all my healing magic already, so I was hoping someone could help me with first aid? [someone to either teach her first aid, or someone to be first aided on; Madoka's not picky.]

Oh! I know that well, actually.

[He sounds.. surprised? People don't normally rely on him for knowledge, but he relaxes.]

Mm, I'm used to getting hurt like this you see - so I'd be happy to teach! Do you have any supplies? We will go step by step. ☆

[for some reason, the fact that Chiaki is normally roughed up like this doesn't surprise her. and, well — a bit sheepishly, Madoka just holds up her notebook.]

I don't really have much in the way of supplies yet ... but I can definitely take notes! What do you think is most important for me to learn?

[Ah - he can't help but manage a little laugh at that.]

Okay, okay. I didn't bring them to the beach with me, but I think I found supplies and left them back at the main camp - I promise I'll find you later and show you properly!

[but he doesn't mind... trying to explain? his explanations tend to be pretty bad but here we go]

Mm, I'll do what I can but I've been told that I'm poor at explaining myself... so let me know if I need to go over anything in more detail, okay?

Really? Thank you! [she resettles herself, notebook in hand and pen at the ready.]

[and, even if she has trouble understanding, Madoka figures she also has plenty of time to really study everything. comes with the territory when you can only use your magic once every 24 hours.]

I'm sure it'll be fine. I really appreciate any advice you can give me.

Of course, of course! Now then, when it's cuts or sprains...

[and he'll go into some sort of detailed explanation here - because he's actually trying his best for her! Chiaki's a stuntman, so he's got the basics of first aid down pretty solidly since he patches himself up often. SO PRESUME HE SOUNDS LIKE HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT - ]

For larger wounds... hmm, it might be easier to find a doctor? However in general, it's always best to slow any bleeding - elevation and pressure work for that! I've been lucky to not face those types of wounds myself, but it's better to be prepared than not!

Does that make sense? Should I go over anything again?

[Madoka had been scribbling furiously as Chiaki spoke, wanting first and foremost to make sure that she got everything down so she could study later. give her a second while she looks over the pages ...]

I think it makes sense ... What should I do if I don't have anything to use as a bandage? For a big cut like that, I mean.
