[OPENING] magical training log

Who: Brie, whichever newbies want to show up.
Where: The beach.
When: Day 4
Open/Closed: OTA

[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

[he jumps and crumples the paper in his grip]

Nothing! Nothing is wrong.

[his power obviously has nothing to do with spur-of-the-moment lying, because he's real bad at it]

[Yang gives him a look that says 'I know you're lying' and crosses her arms.]

Look, I don't even know you and I can tell you're lying. Maybe I can help. Is it about your magic power?

[That's why most people were on the beach anyway.]

[he's reluctant, but he also knows that was a bad lie, so there's not a lot of point in making it more awkward than it is. still, he offers her the paper instead of telling her what it is outright: dragon transformation; fly two people up a mountain on the island, it says.]

It's -- it's a really bad thing where I come from. It makes sense that we have to practice it if it's what we've got to use, but . . . at the same time, really?

[Odd, but Yang accepts and reads the scrap. She blinks.]

Wow! You can turn into a dragon? That sounds like a really cool power though.

[She could certainly think of some fun she could have with that. Still, after he explains she can understand a little better. What if she'd been given the ability to turn into a Grimm or something?]

Are they like, really bad where you're from?

[She offers the slip of paper back to him.]

[he takes it, folding it up small between his fingers; a nervous gesture]

You could say that. A dragon's what happens if a seraph -- that's what I am -- gets too corrupted with malevolence. I've helped fight a couple of them. It's a really weird feeling to be asked to turn into one voluntarily -- to say the least.

But...if that's your magic then maybe it's different from dragons as you know them. Dragons aren't like that in every world after all.

[Or so she assumed, since she had no idea what a seraph was and there were just stories about dragons back home--not real things unless you counted the Grimm that took the form of dragons.]

I can see where you'd hesitate to try though.

If it's a 'power' I'm suppose to use then it stands to reason it's different...probably? It's the 'probably' that gets me.

[he shakes his head a little and folds his arms, mouth crooking wryly]

Sorry, you probably didn't come here to see someone bellyache about being able to do something new.

Hey. If we're all supposed to work together then it's important we understand each other, right? I don't think it's bellyaching.

[She considers what to say next.]

But...you're never going to know for sure if you don't try now. Might as well do it now while we're all practicing than find out by accident some other time when it might cause even more trouble. Better to face your fear I say.

[he half-smiles, just for a moment]

Hey, thanks. I know that's what I should do too, just --

It does mean something to have someone else say it, as well.

It's usually easier to tell yourself something, but actually accepting it can be hard. What I mean is...listening to your head can be a lot easier than accepting it with your heart.

[Logic wasn't always easy to accept. Just because you 'knew' something didn't mean it was easy to go through with.]

Hmm...sorry I guess even that was a little cliche. Still, I hope it helps.
