[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

Oh, the healer? Nice, we'll hopefully not give you too much to do. Not because we ain't fans of bein' helped, mind, but because it is always chill to not need healin'.

[sorry John did a really good job selling her on their coolness. like, expert level. that, and Madoka can't hate anybody who enjoys craft supplies as much as she does!]

It's really great to meet you all. Um ... [she turns to and fro a bit, as if looking all around her person for something that she can offer — all she has on her is a notebook, a pen and her Soul Gem. prooobably shouldn't offer the Soul Gem, though.]

[but then she drops to her knees, flipping the notebook open and tearing out a page.

I'm sorry, I don't really have a lot to offer. [she says as she's folding the paper — after a moment, she holds up a neatly folded paper crane.] What about this?

[Please don't give up your Soul Gem, the last thing they need is a dead magical girl because the betas screwed up. Still, he watches her hands carefully and he's genuinely fascinated with the origami, holding out his palm to take it.]

No way, this is perfect. Remember what I told you the other day? ["But I do not think that last part is true though. About there being nothing interesting, I mean." He feels that way still, about how it isn't true she doesn't have a lot to offer. Still once the crane is in hand he's cradling it pretty carefully so it isn't squished before looking at the others.]

also, dave looks at the crane, thinks about it, and uncaps his marker. within seconds he has produced a very terribly lopsided sparkly pink tiara? he hands it to john. ]

[Madoka grins a little at that, and rubs the back of her head, and maybe turning a bit pink(er).]

I'm just glad you're able to make use of it! [and also desperately curious to see what sort of creation is going to come out of it.]

I cannot believe you guys don't trust my totally sweet powers. [Madoka may not notice it, but there is a hint of irony to John's tone. He knows that this power is actually dangerous in his hands since he can't fully control it.

The tiara and the crane are first and he holds both items in his hands before bringing them together to create a sparkly pink paper crane. The crown is infused on top of its head, though the color is now the color of the notebook paper Madoka originally used. He looks triumphant for the moment.]

I think this is getting better? Rose, is the yarn magic, too? [And he's holding up the crane for the others to look at.] Nothing exploded so that is a good sign. Good call with the paper.

[ dave's eyebrows raise as he glances sideways at his sister.

also, he nudges john's knee with his knee. ]

I trust your powers, I just also trust them to be hilariously unpredictable?

You'll see what it does if it does it. [ spoilers it's enchanted to... change colors when tapped. like, a rainbow nightlight or something??? ]

[MADOKA IS HONESTLY SO DELIGHTED RIGHT NOW and the three of them aren't really debunking her theory about how cool they are.]

[but her favorite part of the whole thing is how well they all work together. there are few things she loves more than friendship — and though she can't really place why, there's something nostalgic about the past 10 minutes.]

Thanks a lot, guys. [He settles for nudging both of his friends before taking Rose's yarn, trying to see if he can tell its enchantment just from looking at it. (The answer is no.) However, he does shoot Madoka another smile because...well, he likes when people are happy. He likes doing these things for people.]

You did a great job folding it. I do not think I have the patience for something like that. [But he takes a moment to focus, willing himself to try and create a yarn-crane and not yarn with a crane pattern or something stupid like that. The item flickers in his hands, almost like it wants to fuse into something else, but the yarn and the crane fuse correctly and create a soft bird made of sparkly pink yarn with a tiara on its head. It's only then he hands it back to Madoka first to test it.]

So far most of Rose's magic involves touch. Check it out. [He will let Madoka do the honors of tapping the bird and figuring it out for all of them. And then he looks at Dave.] A tiara? [Is this because they were arguing about crowns the other day, Dave, wtf.]

[hang on a sec she is completely engrossed in and awed by the bird — even when she gathers herself to speak, Madoka can't seem to stop tapping it and watching it flash between colors.]

[this is easily the best plush animal she's ever seen. and Madoka has a lot of stuffed animals.]

[It's fine, John is also engrossed with the color-changing bird? This is cool. He's counting the colors with every change, too.]

I guess it can be pretty cool when it's mixed up like that. [He's happiest this way.] Glad you like it, though. It's yours now. [Does this count as part of his mission, we just don't know...] I think I still miss my other powers, but this isn't so bad.

[one day in the distant future, Madoka will remember that she made a wish once upon a time and sort of ... erased herself from memory. and on that day, she'll disappear into the cosmos and continue watching over the universe as a law of nature.]

[and floating somewhere in space with her will be a small plush bird. scientists will have no idea what the heck.]

[for now, though, Madoka can't help but feel like she just got the best present ever — and it shows on her face.]

I can heal pretty much anything! But, it looks like I can only do it once a day.

[At least she'll have a companion, and these three won't even know it. However, he's leaning back on his hands now and tracing out little squiggles in the sand, mostly allowing the Strilondes to get to know Madoka but also contributing where he can.]

Madoka's powers are pretty straight-forward compared to ours. I think all of us are still learning the limits. [There's a pout.] But I am not going to combine people? [He rolls his eyes.] But that's a pretty impressive thing, I think! Being able to heal pretty much anything. Maybe with practice you can work up to more than once a day, too.

No side effects to you for healin', though, right?

Interesting. Perhaps more useful than our arts and crafts corner here as well, even if you are limited in such a way. It's fairly likely we'll encounter some violence sooner or later, if I were to make an educated guess.

If there are any side effects, I haven't noticed them. [of course, Madoka's pretty terrible at noticing the side effects of any of her magic.]

[she's also pretty terrible at not being completely obvious with her feelings — she suddenly looks rather concerned.]

That's ... what I've been worried about, actually. What if there's more than one person who's really injured? How do I choose who to heal?

[Choices suck. He can understand that worry and yet he's still fiddling around with the sand next to him even as there's a very slow shrug.]

I think...it's one of those things that the more you do it the more you'll know. It will be easy to determine what you need to do in order to help everyone you need to? I don't think it will really be a "choice" thing as you keep getting better with your powers.

Besides, you can always learn other ways to help injured people. [ dave shrugs. ] Magic can be a fallback to somethin' big, but learnin' actual combat first aid might not go wrong? I can teach you some.

[ clarification: he can teach actually a lot. he has always handled his own injuries. ]
