[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

[he's quiet and still and gauging Mikleo's unhappiness with this revelation; the silence makes time stretch, but it isn't more than a minute before he leans in so that they're shoulder to shoulder and wordlessly reaches for the paper again]

[lets him have it this time, quietly, but it doesn't give much more information than that. his power is listed as dragon transformation and his mission as flying two people to an island mountaintop.]

[the confirmation is still something, and he stares at the paper as his brain tries to catch up with what it says.]

Do you want to try it?

[there isn't any sort of pressure behind the question to lean one way or another, just a hollow surprise]

Honestly? Not really.

[he sounds a little resigned, though. surprised and unhappy as he is about it, he's also had four days to let the idea sink in by now.]

But I'll have to.

You don't have to if you don't want to. It's not like anybody's going to make you.

[it might be frowned upon, but there's no reason for Mikleo to force himself into it]

I don't have any other powers right now, Sorey. I can still fight, and -- there's some people here who can use water, I could probably give them an idea of how to deal with it. But if I've been given a new ability that's useful, I'll have to use it sooner or later. That or something will come up that will make me need to use it.

[sucks in a long breath, after that little speech]

I just...need to get used to the idea.

Well...take as much time as you need to get used to it. It doesn't have to be right now.

[though even as he says it he knows it will be, because there isn't much point in waiting if Mikleo already decided on it. but that doesn't make him feel better about it.]

[reaches up and squeezes his shoulder for a second, wordlessly grateful]

[he falls quiet for a minute longer, mulling over the words on the page before passing it back to Mikleo.]

I'm probably worrying too much about it. You've always been able to master anything you put your mind to.

I suppose if it goes awry you and Edna will be there to knock some sense back into me.

[he sounds irritated, but he's relieved...? he doesn't know what he might have done if he'd wound up here, with this power, all alone.]

If you're looking for someone to knock some sense into you we can do that even if you're not a giant dragon.

[he can't help the little smile twitching on his face from spreading; he's relieved, too]

Hmmmmf.

[and with that, he leans over and tries to grab Sorey's paper instead.]

[Sorey let's him without protest. he DID ask for help, after all.]

Mine's a little better than yours. I think.

[his eyebrows have gone up]

'Soul dives'. . .?

I'm guessing that it's just what it sounds like.

[oneandmikleonly]

That could manifest in any number of ways! Like -- what, would you be treating other people like a seraph treats a human vessel? Doesn't that have the potential to be dangerous?!

[imsorey]

That's not what it is! It's just like--visiting, I think. That's the kind of feeling I get from it.

[it could be dangerous, certainly, but that's all the more reason to train and know exactly what he's dealing with.]

[oneandmikleonly]

[sighs]

Just to practice it you're going to have to go up to someone and ask, 'hey, can I pop in your soul?'

[imsorey]

There might be someone who doesn't mind. But I understand if no one wants to. If that's the case, I'll just figure out a different way of training.

[it is, by nature, something that he needs someone else's help with in order to improve, but the look on his face says that he's already planning alternatives]

[makes a face at him; almost casually]

You can use mine.

[raising an eyebrow]

Are you sure it's okay?

[oneandmikleonly]

Consider it payback, or something.

I don't think it works like that. But I won't say no to the help.

I spend enough time in yours that it feels silly not to return the favor when I can.

[holds out a closed fist, in a familiar gesture]
