[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

[ listen, when the truth is revealed... he'll never see it coming. ]

Earbuds, definitely. The headsets are too clunky.

[ he tilts his head to the side. ]

They're mostly just strings and circles, right? [ yusuke would kill him for that description. ]

More or less, geometrically speakin'. Give me a few minutes.

[ since he will have to go very, very carefully to try to make earbuds that will work...dave pulls out his sketchbook and pencils, and hops to it. ]

What's your magical power, anyway?

[actus]

Not as useful as yours.

[ his eyes remain peeled to the sketchbook, trying to sneak a peek of the artist at work. it's vaguely reminiscent of watching yusuke sketch back home. ]

My hands catch on fire.

[parodeity]

Only your hands? Huh.

[ when he's finally done, the lines of the drawing vanish and the earbuds appear. they are kind of neon colored but functional, and dave hands them over. ]

Maybe eventually you will be able to set your entire body on fire?

[actus]

[ !!! akira takes them with the tiny stirrings of a smile. ]

I hope not. It happens whenever I tell a joke.

[ and it's kind of second-nature to him to do that, especially when he's nervous. ]

...That is the weirdest trigger ever and remind me to stand back if you ever start jokin' around?

[ NO SENSE TEMPTING FATE ]

[actus]

[ RIGHT.... WELL... ]

It's sort of my default. Bad jokes, I mean.

[ he absently rubs the back of his neck as he tries to plug the headphones into the MP3. success! ]

I can't even judge. It's basically the best conversational copin' method?

[ he grins, and then brings the headphone up to his -- oh. ]

...Ah. The player is already dead.

[ HE WILL NEVER KNOW IF THE HEADPHONES WORK... ]

...Maybe world one will have chargers? Alternately, there might be people who can help with that...I know one guy is buildin' or has built a charger, and you can ask him if you can use it. Or my sister can try to enchant a charge.

[actus]

That could work.

[ he mulls it over. for now, he pockets the mp3 player and headphones. ]

You don't think charging it with fire would work, do you? [ it's deadpan.... ]

[parodeity]

[ ...GLANCES AT AKIRA'S HANDS TO SEE IF DEADPAN JOKES COUNT. ]

I bet someone or another has magic that could make it work. But the guy with the charger is Dirk - he has pointy anime shades - and the girl with enchantments is Rose. She looks kind of like me, but is a girl?

[actus]

[ ... there's no embers or smoke. thank god. his entire life is deadpan. ]

Dirk and Rose. Got it.

[ he nods, thinks for a second, tipping his head to the side. ]

Is she also shady? [ ... yeah there are the tiny embers. god damnit. ]

[parodeity]

So puns are off-limits, I guess. [ one of the corners of his mouth curls up, though. ] She's shady in the non-sunglasses sense.

[actus]

Yeah. And they count over text, too. I think that's cheating.

[ ah. ]

Super villain sense?

[parodeity]

What about when you just think them to yourself? Also, kind of. Rose is a great person, but also, she is absolutely terrifyin' and enjoys eldritch horrors.

[actus]

Hm. [ ... he's going to think of a pun. and -- okay, yeah nothing is happening. ] I think I have to actually mean to send them to someone.

[ a beat, and his hands, now put-out, slide into his pockets. ]

She sounds like my sister. Absolutely terrifying sometimes. Especially about the internet.

[ the fact he's referred to futaba as his sister isn't lost on him - it just felt sort of right. ]

Mine gets up in arms about...well, lots of things. She's either very calm or very murderous. I love her.

[ LAUGHS...he loves rose lalonde so much ]

But here she can enchant any needlework with, uh, one enchantment? Of her choice. So she can probably manage a magical chargin' cozy or somethin', if the other option doesn't pan out. Also, that's pretty tragic. That you can't share your jokes without settin' shit on fire, I mean? Does the like quality of the joke effect how hot the fire is or anything?

[actus]

I know the feeling. My friend moved her figurines once and she almost bit his head off.

[ ah, fond, fond memories. he misses her. still, the rest of what dave said registers and akira can't help the way his right hand slips out of his pocket to adjust his glasses. again with the theatrics. ]

...And I dunno about that. Want to find out?

Sure. Maybe we should move a little further away from like flammable cabins while we test it out, though?

[ JUST IN CASE. ]

[actus]

...Right.

[ SMART THINKING. he slowly nods, a weak sort of laugh escaping him as he begins striding this way, away from the cabins. ]

Akira, by the way.

[ no sense in giving his family name, since it wasn't exactly something he preferred going by. ]

[ SINCE AKIRA ONE-NAMED IT he will just leave it at dave, also. AND THESE IDIOTS NEVER INTRODUCED THEMSELVES IN THEIR PUN THREAD so...good job kids. ]

I wonder if different kinds of jokes produce different kind of flame, also?

[ THE MYSTERY CONTINUES. until akira outs himself with his dumbass jokes. ]

I haven't noticed any difference.

[ ...actually, the joke he told haru had only made minimal embers, so. ]

Actually, I think puns have the strongest effect.

...So for the biggest fire blasts you need good puns. Or bad puns? Ok, hit it.

[ dave will stand like ten feet over here tho ]

Not sure. Guess we'll find out.

[ hah! he's going to mutter some horrible pun under his breath and his fires catch ablaze. ]

I haven't tried telling one when they're already like this, so...

[ he's going to murmur something about kelp under his breath and the flames flicker, burning hotter and larger for a split second before cooling down to tiny little embers once more. interesting. ]
