[It's about noon on the island, based on the position of the sun. The newbies have had a few days to settle in, but that doesn't mean they've fully mastered their newfound abilities.

As much stock as Genette puts into telepathy, Brie is more concerned about their other newfound gifts. She's aggressively tried to wrangle as many newbies as possible onto the sandy shores of the beachfront area for some magic practice.

She's got a list of everyone's magic -- only a few vague notes, limitations are for you to discover -- and she's handing out missions for magic training. If you want to participate? Feel free. If you don't? Suit yourself.

But understanding your magic isn't just an activity that benefits the group. Learning your magic's abilities may be what stands between you and survival, which is something she makes perfectly clear.]

i: solo

[ dave's mission is, by his standards, pretty dull. "draw a backpack, a bag of chips and a crossbow into existence". ok, easy enough. granted, he doesn't do it exactly well, but that matters less about certain easier items. the backpack is kind of shoddy but servicable; the bag of chips is easier, being simple to draw, although the doritos might be off-brand.

the crossbow is fairly terrible because he's never handled a fucking crossbow in his life, and the details are kind of...vague. the firing mechanism doesn't work because he doesn't really know how a crossbow firing mechanism works or what it looks like, so...yeah.

he gave up on the three items (though he drew a variety of chips-in-bags if anyone cares to take them and try them) and is now methodically working through other random objects. swords of varying quality; shuriken shaped like card suits (suitarangs); a brain; dozens of little sculptures of his shitty webcomic; three attempts at a keyboard before he went "fuck it" and moved onto his current task:

cookies.

there is literally no rhyme or reason to his actions, is there. dave eyes the plate of cookies he has produced via drawing dubiously. ]

A'ight, there's basically no way to know if these are oatmeal or, like, oatmeal raisin. Or some other type of cookie. I think maybe I wasn't thinkin' about it proper. But you can have one anyway if you want?

[ or give him something better to draw...lord. ]

Alternately, I am takin' requests. For whatever drawings, not just baked goods.

ii: duet

[ rose is seated primly on a beach blanket (produced by dave, so it is. misshapen), decked out in a fairly serviceable sundress while her brother is still apparently a believer in jeans and long sleeves and shades. they look similar enough they're obviously related, even if they hadn't been referring to one another in that way to other people without worry.

they're currently debating the finer points of needlecraft. namely: ]

- technically you could enchant a voodoo doll but why would you want to is what I'm sayin'.

[ okay, that's not really a finer point of needlecraft, but rose responds perfectly calmly: ] You'll note I never said I did, Dave. It was, in fact, you who raised the topic of voodoo dolls by yourself, after making the pincushion. I simply didn't discourage you from doing so.

[ the pinchusion in question is sweet bro's head. why, dave.

dave looks mortally offended by this logic. ]

I brought it up as in "hey Rose you know what you should never, ever do - " oh, hi. Back me up here, if you have magic sewin' skills why would you go for the biggest damn magical needlecraft cliche in the history of anythin' ever?

[ rose, again: ] I believe the person you mean to argue with is yourself, but by all means let's hear what they have to say.

[ dave, rose, and john are all sitting together on the beach (on the misshapen beach blanket from the above prompt) when you have the unfortunate luck of being spotted by all three of them at once.

it's not too late to run? however, dave will call out: ]

Hey, want to help us with some mad science?

[ this sounds worrying and may net you a hideous object because it is in fact very worrying when they work together. rose has a bunch of needlecraft supplies arrayed in front of her, john has some random junk, and dave is spinning a marker idly.

[ ... you know what, he'll definitely take this guy up on his offer. both the cookie, and the whole drawing request. ]

...They're pretty stale. You might want to draw in some flavor.

[ it's said in deadpan as he continues nibbling at the cookie until a thought strike him. with his free hand, he retrieves the MP3 player and holds it out, the device flat in his palm. it's pretty lame, to be honest. ]

Can you draw headphones?

I'm admittedly not sure how to draw headphones?

[ hey akira he has no idea it's you...text is a hard medium. ]

D'you prefer earbuds or over the ears headsets?

[actus]

[ listen, when the truth is revealed... he'll never see it coming. ]

Earbuds, definitely. The headsets are too clunky.

[ he tilts his head to the side. ]

They're mostly just strings and circles, right? [ yusuke would kill him for that description. ]

More or less, geometrically speakin'. Give me a few minutes.

[ since he will have to go very, very carefully to try to make earbuds that will work...dave pulls out his sketchbook and pencils, and hops to it. ]

What's your magical power, anyway?

[actus]

Not as useful as yours.

[ his eyes remain peeled to the sketchbook, trying to sneak a peek of the artist at work. it's vaguely reminiscent of watching yusuke sketch back home. ]

My hands catch on fire.

Only your hands? Huh.

[ when he's finally done, the lines of the drawing vanish and the earbuds appear. they are kind of neon colored but functional, and dave hands them over. ]

Maybe eventually you will be able to set your entire body on fire?

[actus]

[ !!! akira takes them with the tiny stirrings of a smile. ]

I hope not. It happens whenever I tell a joke.

[ and it's kind of second-nature to him to do that, especially when he's nervous. ]

[ he absently rubs the back of his neck as he tries to plug the headphones into the MP3. success! ]

[ he grins, and then brings the headphone up to his -- oh. ]

...Maybe world one will have chargers? Alternately, there might be people who can help with that...I know one guy is buildin' or has built a charger, and you can ask him if you can use it. Or my sister can try to enchant a charge.

[Madoka almost hadn't been sure Dave was addressing her at first — she freezes, looks around frantically for a few seconds, back at the three of them ...]

[oh! she's already heard about their item shenanigans earlier from John. and about the ... was it space travel? Madoka didn't understand a lot of it, but it sounded really cool — and so by extension, these three must be extremely cool. right? right.]

[so she heads right on over.]

[Madoka, John is sorry he ever gave you the impression these three are even remotely close to being cool. However, he recognizes her voice and he perks up at the sight of her.]

Hey! [It's almost impossible to miss the fact that he's elated to be here, brighter and more cheerful even than he was in their first conversation.] All three of us got separate assignments but we want to keep practicing at merging our powers together, too. [And because he said he would, he turns to his friends and grins again.] This is Madoka. I met her when Genette handed out those mirror shards. [Dave, at least, might remember that John also mentioned she was a healer now.]

Oh, the healer? Nice, we'll hopefully not give you too much to do. Not because we ain't fans of bein' helped, mind, but because it is always chill to not need healin'.

[ dave leans forward a little. ]

D'you have any items you might wanna contribute to the mad science cause? Nothin' you're super, super attached to, mind.

A pleasure to meet you, Madoka. [ even if rose does not have any recollection of healer mentions she will CATCH ON ] And knowing us, we may very well be giving you unnecessary work, despite my brother's hopes.

[sorry John did a really good job selling her on their coolness. like, expert level. that, and Madoka can't hate anybody who enjoys craft supplies as much as she does!]

It's really great to meet you all. Um ... [she turns to and fro a bit, as if looking all around her person for something that she can offer — all she has on her is a notebook, a pen and her Soul Gem. prooobably shouldn't offer the Soul Gem, though.]

[but then she drops to her knees, flipping the notebook open and tearing out a page.

I'm sorry, I don't really have a lot to offer. [she says as she's folding the paper — after a moment, she holds up a neatly folded paper crane.] What about this?

[Please don't give up your Soul Gem, the last thing they need is a dead magical girl because the betas screwed up. Still, he watches her hands carefully and he's genuinely fascinated with the origami, holding out his palm to take it.]

No way, this is perfect. Remember what I told you the other day? ["But I do not think that last part is true though. About there being nothing interesting, I mean." He feels that way still, about how it isn't true she doesn't have a lot to offer. Still once the crane is in hand he's cradling it pretty carefully so it isn't squished before looking at the others.]

also, dave looks at the crane, thinks about it, and uncaps his marker. within seconds he has produced a very terribly lopsided sparkly pink tiara? he hands it to john. ]

[Madoka grins a little at that, and rubs the back of her head, and maybe turning a bit pink(er).]

I'm just glad you're able to make use of it! [and also desperately curious to see what sort of creation is going to come out of it.]

I cannot believe you guys don't trust my totally sweet powers. [Madoka may not notice it, but there is a hint of irony to John's tone. He knows that this power is actually dangerous in his hands since he can't fully control it.

The tiara and the crane are first and he holds both items in his hands before bringing them together to create a sparkly pink paper crane. The crown is infused on top of its head, though the color is now the color of the notebook paper Madoka originally used. He looks triumphant for the moment.]

I think this is getting better? Rose, is the yarn magic, too? [And he's holding up the crane for the others to look at.] Nothing exploded so that is a good sign. Good call with the paper.
