catch-all open log!
Who: Anyone and everyone!
Where: On the beach, and various other places throughout the hub island
When: Day 80, and the next couple days after
Open/Closed: open log for hub shenanigans!
[This evening, someone has placed an old, rusted-over camp stove on the beach near the coven's row of huts--anyone examining it in detail will see that it's not operational at the moment, but that could potentially be changed, couldn't it? If someone was handy with mechanical things . . . .
Next to it is a crate (which, from the weight of it is empty) and pinned to that crate is a sheet of paper with a map on it, something like a much cruder, black-and-white version of this:

with the following key:
1 - crags. Contain snakes which may be poisonous. Watch out.
2 - ocean, going about one mile out from the coast.
3 - lagoon. Contains thick reeds (could be woven or shaped into tools) and frogs (edibility uncertain).
4 - abandoned campsite.
5 - orchard. Currently, trees are diseased and bare. Plant healer needed.
6 - abandoned house. A family used to live here, from the looks of it. Still contains some useful supplies.
And there should be a 7 north of base camp with the notation "graveyard. Graves unused." but the player forgot and is too lazy to go back and fix it right now. Observant individuals will note that the map looks like a more detailed version of one hanging on the door to a certain coven member's cabin, one that has a note on the bottom: "Have information? Ask for Jay."
Other than that, it's a quiet night on the hub island. We've been here for a couple days; maybe you're getting restless? Want to check out that ocean, or lagoon, or even those crags? Maybe just go door-to-door in the beach huts? Maybe you're sick of shrimp and looking for other things to eat . . . hopefully someone's got a fire going tonight, and thought to kill a boar . . . .
What are you doing tonight?]

[Vern isn't incredibly vell-versed in botanical husbandry or anything, but with the rest of the island lush as it is, it's not hard to see that there's something wrong in the orchard; he can be found walking around thre trees with his arms folded, sometimes peering owlishly close to get a better look at the bark or a section of the bare branches. he's frowning, and if someone else (you) walks into the grove, he'll turn and ask:]
Can you do anything with plants? Or water? Doesn't need to be magical.
b
[a little farther out from there, you can spot him standing right around where the rocky area around the crags begins, though he's not foolhardy enough to go scrambling up there on his own for sure. still, why is he looking up at a bunch of rocks with such intensity?
if you approach to investigate, you can hear him muttering to himself--]
A cave, a decent cave's all I want -- ugh, are we going to have to dig one out?

[So the plants here are sick, just like she was told about. Yuuko hasn't really been spending time honing her powers or really doing anything magical. She spent her time in the last world reading in that big library and while she learned a lot she didn't really do anything.
Not so here on the hub. Gardening and making consumable food has been her priority since day one!
Can she can save these all trees...? well, she's unsure. But at the very least she can help new things grow.
With a smile she ties up her long dark hair and rolls up her frilly sleeves. Time to get to work. She's been waiting for this! With confidence she places her hand on the decaying bark and...
Nothing happens.
Eh? [That didn't work? Now, she's not a plant healer (as far as she knows) but if these trees are dead then they should stay dead... Good thing she knows how to tell. But every tree is going to need to be checked. This will require some helping hands.]

OTA!
[Well, that little holiday by the seaside was... charming in its own way- even if, in hindsight, it was a vacation through a warzone more than anything else- but with all that strife finally hitting its end the coven could return home to their beloved island ...And back to a buncha shacks on a beach at the edge of the world, and Red's half-emptied stores of boar jerky looking even drier and tougher than he'd left them before.
Home, sweet home, and already he was itching to stretch his legs. And even if it was the camp stove that had caught his eye, it was the map of the iland that had him linger-- especially when he saw that number two mark on a familiar stretch of particularly well-defined coastline.]
"Maybe I oughta go back now that I've seen a normal ocean," Red spoke as he tapped the mark on the map. "...or try this whole 'fishing' thing."
B - Exothermic
[Of course, he did have one or two other items on his 'to-do' list when he returned to the coven's island, and one such item was to finally treat himself to a nice, long soak in some water that didn't smell like brine and leave kelp clinging to his leg. Thankfully, he still remembered the island's mansion from last time- including the little bath house right beside it.
Unfortunately, Red had forgotten that all the water was scalding hot. It's not long before he's back to sitting against the wall in a room dense with steam, towel around his waist, (im)patiently waiting for that while 'vitality' magic to hurry up and take the stong out from that red and blistered foot to so he can walk home.
At least it was a little relaxing with all the steam, even if he wished he had actual healing magic or something at times like this. And was loudly grumbling out fragments of that sentiment.]

[it isn't until they're settled back on the island and her Soul Gem is, functionally, little more than a piece of jewelry, that it really sinks in, and Madoka realizes she has a problem. she didn't exactly defend herself all that well against the Uvi, and that was even with her regular powers — how could she expect to be any more helpful to the coven when she can't actually fight?]
[she is desperate not to feel useless, and luckily, she ... sort of has a solution. one might find her at the beach early in the morning, sitting a few feet away from the shore as she ties random bits of odds and ends and a stick together with some of the hair ribbons she's been hanging onto.]
[next to her is a bow that has seen better days — one final parting gift from the Palai. it looks like it might snap if she pulls on it too hard, or at least give her a few gnarly splinters, but Madoka knows her own magically-granted weapon like an extension of her hand — surely she'd be able to figure out how to repair this one!]
b. testing phase
[once she's reasonably proven that she can use this bow and poorly constructed arrows to catch dinner from the ocean, it's time to see how it all holds up with heavier use.]
[it's late afternoon, and Madoka's standing at the edge of the forest, weapon in hand. this is totally fine. she can handle this! she can heal if she runs into trouble — and besides, she's going to need something to make more arrows, and the forest is going to be her best bet.]
[there is no need to hesitate.]
[somewhere off in the distance, a boar's furious cry roars through the trees, and she freezes.]
[Madoka should probably turn around and find someone who can help.]
c. a jorb well done
[it's been a somewhat productive day! Madoka is pleased, at least. so, that night, she's dragged a weirdly shaped pink sleeping bag out of her hut — not for sleeping, though — it's filled with a random assortment of foods and spices that she'd dragged back from Aimintas. don't ask how she managed to carry this sleeping bag all the way back; she's a magical girl, she found a way.]
[want something to eat other than fish, boar or shrimp? Madoka's more than willing to share.]

[ percival has spent the majority of his time in the orchard. he can be seen...stroking quite a few of the trees, almost...soothingly? speaking to them all the while. the select few he's spent an extensive amount of time with have visibly deepened in color, and begun to sprout leaves again. no fruit yet — it took hours to get many of these to budge. trees! what can you do, some are more receptive than others.
there's still a great amount to account for, so he'll speak to you once he's noted your presence. ]
I can't gauge where the source of this disease dwells, but a comparison will serve us well. Perhaps some may even begin to bear fruit.

[Geir's been checking out the places noted on Jay's map, and now that he's finishing his quick survey, he's fetched up at the location furthest from the base camp-- the lagoon. this is a very new kind of water body to him, and he submerged himself as far as possible into the shallow freshwater pool that the stream is feeding to watch the frogs hop (and even snap at them once in a while). notably, the reeds are growing taller and taller around him as he lays there... these look like useful materials, and Geir bets that he can use his power to help make more of them for the coven. he'd be easy to interrupt while he's concentrating!
on the other hand, if anyone came by by a little later, they'd find him curiously trying to weave some of the longer reeds into a lattice. he's hampered by his claws but helped by the fact that his materials are now so much larger than they were.]

[It's like magnetism, you know?? Souda's going to be drawn to it. It's like leaving out a random bottle of cola! He's been cautious about venturing out after laying claim to one of the (REALLY TINY!!!!) huts. He's not used to this traveling around thing or to this hub island in the least...
But camp stoves? Tech? He can do. Even if a random one just being placed there is kind of suspicious.
He's plopped in the sand and, around him, various screws are just floating, rotating in the air as he mutters to himself, meticulously scrubbing the rust off of a part in his hand. If you venture close enough, it seems like he's muttering something about gotta maintain your stuff and man this is old...]
ii. the most tentative exploring
[The next morning (because like heck he's travelling out into the wilderness IN THE EVENING), Souda can be found making his way from the beach. In his hand it appears he's copied out the map crudely onto his own piece of paper and makes the occasional face at it as he goes.
He's just going to get tenser and tenser the further he gets from the huts...
He's making his way toward the abandoned house which means making his way through some trees and whatnot, and if he happens to catch so much as a bit of motion he turns and yells and books it because that's not overdramatic at all. It could be a leaf. A mouse. A boar??? Or maybe just you.
...At least he only sprints a short distance.]

[Shiro spends his mornings in lion form racing down the sandy beach. He can be caught leaping over debris and dragging anything too big away from obviously well-visited areas. Not always to great success but progress is progress.
Or if you catch him later in the morning Shiro is carefully filling back in the paw prints he left from his exercises.]
It wasn't a hostile cat. [He says while using a make-shift shovel to pack the sand back over the marks.]
Just me.
b. Abandoned Campsite
[After seeing the map, he'd decided to come look at a few locations for himself. Here he is east of base camp to get a look at the abandoned site.
There isn't much to it. He starts with kneeling down to inspect the tent pegs.]
...maybe we can salvage these. Or use them as a reference to make more.

[9S takes the appearance of one crate and some ancient bit of machinery as some form of provisions. Anyone observing will see him circle these items once, then twice, and finally a third time. It's a curious sort of orbit that ends with him abruptly plonking down right by the gadget and tugging it a bit closer to himself for proper examination]
Definitely looks like Old world technology...
[He muses to himself, picking the machine up and turning it about to get a better look at it. Whatever it is, it's in pretty serious disrepair. The rust, at the very least, is a problem. With a thoughtful hum, 9S puts the item back down and taps the air, bringing up a holographic screen]
Let's see here...some kind of cooking apparatus?
[B]iting Cliffs
[The rocky terrain is nothing to halt 9S' strides, picking his way along the crags with the inhuman grace YoRHa androids sport. He maps out the area as he goes, negotiating crumbling ledges and steep inclines like he's walking on even ground... With the occasional slip or two, considering how he weighs about twice what a human his size would.
He creeps close to a precipice once he's reached a certain height, measuring his distance from the water with far more caution than he'd demonstrated during his ascent. That's because he'd sink like a stone if he fell, and he doesn't fancy that sort of end, but he watches the water with pointed interest until something makes him jolt.
Glancing down, he finds a snake coiled about his ankle, teeth apparently stuck in his leg. Must have lodged right between parts, since his skin while deceptively soft covers a metal endoskeleton]
...Fifth time today, geez. [Whether it's poisonous or not doesn't concern him; he acts like he's been bitten by a mosquito as he tugs the snake from his leg] Wonder if humans can eat these things...
Breaking [C]amp
[9S' wanderings eventually bring him to what looks like someone's base of operations. It's easy for him to see that the site has been abandoned for some time, having come from a world that is almost entirely devoid of life. Things abandoned due to circumstances or the steady march of time are nothing new to him.
And so he wanders the camp without particular concern, though his weapons hang suspended behind him by rings of amber light. He circles the area before he halts in front of one tent, peering into it]
Sure isn't very defensible...
[But hey, there are supplies to be had. Cherish your resources]
[W]ildcard
[Have another idea? Throw it right here. 9S is a Scanner unit and bound to rove around anywhere he can get to]

The pleasant smell wafts out from the beach near the huts. With dusk approaching, the large fire she's built becomes increasingly bright and visible against the darkening sky. Over it, Velvet has skewered a good-sized boar on an old fashioned spit. Who needs a stove? Sadly it makes an annoying and drawn out squeeeeeeeak every time she turns it, though she doesn't seem to notice or care.
Drawn to the sound, the sight, or the smell? There's satisfaction and pride behind Velvet's typically surly expression. This is too much food for her to eat by herself, after all, and for now she's not in a particularly boorish mood.

[ An actual ocean. A real live ocean that's not suspended above their heads.
This is all Roxas really ever wants from his life, honestly. A nice, pleasant beach, an ocean in front of him, and nothing particular to do with his time. He's still worried about... several things... but for now, he's calm.
Well, sort of. He's also running along the beach, picking up every seashell he can find. His hands are... completely full, honestly, and he slips on the wet sand just as someone walks past. He is literally buried in seashells. He cannot stand up.
A muffled "help" comes from somewhere below the pile. ]

... Okay, someone's gotta show me how you do this.
[ He's aware from some vague memories of Never Land that it's possible to weave something resembling a very bendy sword- maybe more like a whip- out of reeds, but he has absolutely no idea what he's doing. He's surrounded by a pile of torn up reeds, and he's looking really frustrated. ]

Earlier Kosuzu managed to salvage a couple essentials, among them a slightly-rickety fishing rod. Now, she's parked herself on the outskirts of the crags, feet dangling off a short cliff overlooking the sea, fishing rod in hand. It's quiet, and not much is going on, which is exactly how fishing is supposed to be on a day like this. Fish aren't doing a lot of biting, but that's honestly secondary to the overall feel of things. She wouldn't mind a little company, but she wouldn't mind just fishing on her own for an hour or two, either.
She doesn't know that this is snake territory, and is a lot happier for it. ]

[Edibility uncertain, eh? Well, Jake will try it. He gathered some spices and herbs from the island, caught some frogs and now it's time for some trial and error cooking. Jake hasn't really cooked anything elaborate before but hey, this doesn't seem hard. Build a fire, gut the frogs, rub the legs in herbs and spices, skewer them and then roast them.
It smells good at least? Maybe the smell will attract you to a free meal. Assuming the frog legs don't poison anyone.]
