Who: Anyone and everyone!
Where: On the beach, and various other places throughout the hub island
When: Day 80, and the next couple days after
Open/Closed: open log for hub shenanigans!

[This evening, someone has placed an old, rusted-over camp stove on the beach near the coven's row of huts--anyone examining it in detail will see that it's not operational at the moment, but that could potentially be changed, couldn't it? If someone was handy with mechanical things . . . .

Next to it is a crate (which, from the weight of it is empty) and pinned to that crate is a sheet of paper with a map on it, something like a much cruder, black-and-white version of this:



with the following key:

1 - crags. Contain snakes which may be poisonous. Watch out.
2 - ocean, going about one mile out from the coast.
3 - lagoon. Contains thick reeds (could be woven or shaped into tools) and frogs (edibility uncertain).
4 - abandoned campsite.
5 - orchard. Currently, trees are diseased and bare. Plant healer needed.
6 - abandoned house. A family used to live here, from the looks of it. Still contains some useful supplies.

And there should be a 7 north of base camp with the notation "graveyard. Graves unused." but the player forgot and is too lazy to go back and fix it right now. Observant individuals will note that the map looks like a more detailed version of one hanging on the door to a certain coven member's cabin, one that has a note on the bottom: "Have information? Ask for Jay."

Other than that, it's a quiet night on the hub island. We've been here for a couple days; maybe you're getting restless? Want to check out that ocean, or lagoon, or even those crags? Maybe just go door-to-door in the beach huts? Maybe you're sick of shrimp and looking for other things to eat . . . hopefully someone's got a fire going tonight, and thought to kill a boar . . . .

The frog wouldn't care if you died.

[Tara-Fay is a practical girl. Frogs aren't kosher, either, she considers, which is probably why she hasn't seen anyone try to eat one. Does she care about that? Can things be more or less kosher, or does it not work like that? Where's a rabbi when you need one . . .

(She does not voice any of this aloud.)]

Just because it doesn't look poisonous doesn't mean it isn't, you know.

[Somehow that makes him a little sad, though he guesses it's fair. The frog doesn't need to care if he dies.]

Oh, well. I'll try it first! And if I die, we know not to eat it.

[wingfic]

. . . you're weird.

[She says this decisively. Not caring if you die of frog is definitely weird.]

Frogs aren't kosher, anyway. [Though she still hasn't decided whether she cares or not.]

[potentite]

[He isn't protesting that he's weird.]

Oh, that's a Jewish word, isn't it, ma'am?

[Ma'am? She makes another face. Really definitely weird.]

. . . yeah. You have Jewish people where you're from? [A pause; she hasn't encountered that before. The people who've talked about God, or gods, talked about, well, very different ones.] Are you a Tsarist?

[potentite]

Umm, I don't know what that is so I don't know if I am? But we do have Jewish people! I have never met one but I've seen them in movies.

[wingfic]

You'd know if you were one.

[She is fairly certain of this. Then she hesitates, clearly debating over whether to say something.]

Uh. What's a movie?

[potentite]

[At least it's not the first time someone has asked him that.]

Oh! A movie is um... A series of moving pictures with sound to tell a story.

--oh. Like they had on Aimintas.

[She never went to one herself, so she's still kind of imagining them as fueled by magic. The technology needed for film is still somewhat beyond her.]

So you . . . have stories about us?

[potentite]

Um well I think Jewish people are also real? [Like, he cannot actually be certain about this but he assumes so.] But you're also in movies, yes! One of my favourite movies, Independence Day, features two Jewish characters in fact!

[wingfic]

[But he's never met any of them. That makes sense, sort of; he must live pretty far from wherever his world's Jewish people do. She knows there are countries beyond Vesevia, and part of her wonders if he might even come from one. A strange magical country far from anywhere she's ever been.]

. . . what's it about?

[potentite]

[His eyes light up. It seems she asked the magic question.]

It's an adventure action flick! It follows a handful of interlinked characters during an alien invasion! One of the main characters is a Jewish man with a sorta strained tie with his father. He's the one who figures out all the important shit about the aliens. His father tags along and assists him, too! And uses the Jewish faith in a lovely scene to calm some refugees.

[It's odd, seeing him so excited about these magical moving stories--Jake's a more excitable person than she's used to in general, a bit like a boy version of Fabiana.

Would Fabiana be excited about "movies"? Probably. The thought sours her a little.]

So it's about a man and his father. [In that, it resembles a lot of the important stories she grew up hearing, probably.] And . . . what are aliens?

[potentite]

[Close enough, he thinks. That's one of his favourite plotlines in the movie anyway.] Aliens are, um... creatures from outer space? Usually nasty fiends with the intent to conquer the planet.

[wingfic]

. . . so, from other worlds.

[She says it slowly, as though she's not quite sure of the words.]

Like the Palai? [No, wait--he said something about conquering.] Or the Uvi.

[potentite]

Yes! Though I guess some aliens are good... but not many. [Like he guesses the ones in Contact were good! And other movies he can't think of right now.] Usually they just want to pick a fight.

[wingfic]

I guess that makes sense.

[Humans tend to want to pick a fight. Why would aliens be any different?]

[potentite]

Oh, if you aren't familiar with movies, maybe if the next world has them, I could take you to one?

[She's not quite able to keep the surprise off her face.]
