Where: On the beach, and various other places throughout the hub island
When: Day 80, and the next couple days after
Open/Closed: open log for hub shenanigans!

[This evening, someone has placed an old, rusted-over camp stove on the beach near the coven's row of huts--anyone examining it in detail will see that it's not operational at the moment, but that could potentially be changed, couldn't it? If someone was handy with mechanical things . . . .

Next to it is a crate (which, from the weight of it is empty) and pinned to that crate is a sheet of paper with a map on it, something like a much cruder, black-and-white version of this:



with the following key:

1 - crags. Contain snakes which may be poisonous. Watch out.
2 - ocean, going about one mile out from the coast.
3 - lagoon. Contains thick reeds (could be woven or shaped into tools) and frogs (edibility uncertain).
4 - abandoned campsite.
5 - orchard. Currently, trees are diseased and bare. Plant healer needed.
6 - abandoned house. A family used to live here, from the looks of it. Still contains some useful supplies.

And there should be a 7 north of base camp with the notation "graveyard. Graves unused." but the player forgot and is too lazy to go back and fix it right now. Observant individuals will note that the map looks like a more detailed version of one hanging on the door to a certain coven member's cabin, one that has a note on the bottom: "Have information? Ask for Jay."

Other than that, it's a quiet night on the hub island. We've been here for a couple days; maybe you're getting restless? Want to check out that ocean, or lagoon, or even those crags? Maybe just go door-to-door in the beach huts? Maybe you're sick of shrimp and looking for other things to eat . . . hopefully someone's got a fire going tonight, and thought to kill a boar . . . .

I know a little carpentry and also it's sort of weird to just -- ask people for stuff. Learning would be nice.

It isn't a big deal, but okay. Wood would need a special coating, or we can make something out of stone or metal.

How available is the coating--? I just ask because we have a lot more wood on this island than workable stone or metal that isn't already, um, its own thing.

I don't know if we have any around. I could probably get stone out of the mountain to work with.

[He pauses a moment, focusing, and then...

Think cracks appear in a circle, and a chunk of rock falls out of the cliffside. Dirk catches it.]

[looks at it]

...I thought you destroyed things. Is breaking them close enough to that...?

[splinten]

Nah, that's destruction too.

[He points to the edge of where he marked the space out.]

I destroyed the outline of the shape I wanted to get out of the rock.

[Brandt would have loved to meet you, to see this, Vern takes a breath and almost says, but the past tense of the thought hurts a little too much.]

That's . . . really neat.

[it comes out sounding awkwardly lame, as a replacement conversation continuer. goddammit.]

[Yeah, that's awkward, bro. Dirk definitely notices. But, having his own share of awkward things, he doesn't push. He notes it, and says,]

Yeah. So if you want to do a table made of rock, I can take a chunk out of the mountain side and we can shape it from there.

[takes a breath, a moment, and recovers]

...can it wait until Geir is around, maybe? He'd make any heavy lifting, um, easier. Unless you can destroy gravity.

[please don't destroy gravity on the whole hub.]

[splinten]

[THERE IS LIKE. AN ACTUAL PAUSE.]

That should be theoretically possible, but it feels like one of those things it's better not to experiment with too much.

Okay. Good. I'm glad we can agree on this.

[the corner of his mouth twitches up]

I could always try it specifically on you.

I would not actually say no if you ever wanted to try it for real. Flying is a wonderful ability; I would take its weird destruction-based cousin, even if only temporarily.

[splinten]

It's an interesting idea, but I've got this weird thing where I'm opposed to dying but overwrought dragon when I fuck up and hurt you.

...okay, I mean, fair...

[he can't even argue, he doesn't know what Geir would do if someone genuinely hurt him. it's an oddly uncomfortable thought.]

It was a nice thing to consider, though.

I'd be willing to try it on some inanimate objects if we could establish safety precautions. [Breaking gravity for the entire island would be Bad.]

I mean, can you? What safety precautions can be designed depend entirely on what the discovered scope of your power is.

[that, at least, isn't much different from home.]

It's hard to say. So far I haven't had an issue of destroying a larger area than I intend. It's more that I mess up and destroy the wrong thing. In the case of the four fundamental forces, that could be catastrophic.

[He doesn't want to accidentally destroy weak attraction or something.]
