catch-all open log!

Who: Anyone and everyone!
Where: On the beach, and various other places throughout the hub island
When: Day 80, and the next couple days after
Open/Closed: open log for hub shenanigans!

[This evening, someone has placed an old, rusted-over camp stove on the beach near the coven's row of huts--anyone examining it in detail will see that it's not operational at the moment, but that could potentially be changed, couldn't it? If someone was handy with mechanical things . . . .

Next to it is a crate (which, from the weight of it is empty) and pinned to that crate is a sheet of paper with a map on it, something like a much cruder, black-and-white version of this:

with the following key:

1 - crags. Contain snakes which may be poisonous. Watch out.
2 - ocean, going about one mile out from the coast.
3 - lagoon. Contains thick reeds (could be woven or shaped into tools) and frogs (edibility uncertain).
4 - abandoned campsite.
5 - orchard. Currently, trees are diseased and bare. Plant healer needed.
6 - abandoned house. A family used to live here, from the looks of it. Still contains some useful supplies.

And there should be a 7 north of base camp with the notation "graveyard. Graves unused." but the player forgot and is too lazy to go back and fix it right now. Observant individuals will note that the map looks like a more detailed version of one hanging on the door to a certain coven member's cabin, one that has a note on the bottom: "Have information? Ask for Jay."

Other than that, it's a quiet night on the hub island. We've been here for a couple days; maybe you're getting restless? Want to check out that ocean, or lagoon, or even those crags? Maybe just go door-to-door in the beach huts? Maybe you're sick of shrimp and looking for other things to eat . . . hopefully someone's got a fire going tonight, and thought to kill a boar . . . .

What are you doing tonight?]

It's better than nothing. Do you think a good start would be to mark the boundary of the orchard? We'll likely need help and it will keep everyone on the same page.
rootbound: (saw you sheltered by the night.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-09-29 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, why not. You want to do it today? Not like we're on a schedule or anything while we're here, it's been pretty peaceful.
spaceforged: (Take us in slowly)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2017-09-29 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, the sooner that's marked the better. If anyone else is going to work on this it could help their efforts.
rootbound: (fear no weather.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-09-29 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
People seemed pretty interested in general. I guess no one likes the idea of sick things where there don't have to be...

C'mon, I'll show you where we kept the stuff.

[He follows after Vern, but keeps an eye out. If any boars interrupt them he would be ready to deal with it.]

What exactly are these filters made of?
rootbound: (keep you inside my lungs.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-09-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
[a giant dragon would also come to the rescue if boars interrupted, though Shiro doesn't know that yet; Vern doesn't seem all that worried about them, though.]

Oh--they're made of bark from some of those trees in Aimintas; my friend worked with them to keep seawater from ruining the Palai's farms. We brought some of the bark sheets back, and a couple of the young trees too; they seemed like a pretty good resource, if they'll transplant properly.
spaceforged: (...well that's new.)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2017-10-01 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a good resource if we can use it. Did they need any kind of special soil or temperature?

[Something like that could possibly used to filter a number of things. Looks like he won't have to dig too wide to slip them into the ground. But.]

What's the width and thickness of these bark sheets?
rootbound: (but there's something eating at me.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-10-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
[the player OOCly has no exact idea, but Vern gives Shiro a measurement with descriptive hand gestures; big enough it would take a couple of overlapped sheets to make a deep enough barrier, probably]

The branches work as filters too so those can be used to fill in gaps. Aimintas's climate wasn't too hard to replicate -- humid, not too much rain, sandy soil. We can just plant them near the beach and stick some tarps over the area if we get a burst of rainfall.

This sounds like a lot of supplies to move...should I take lion form for the return trip? So long as we don't take too long I can carry anything we need.

[He's confident he can do it. So long as he isn't carrying a person.]
rootbound: (led only by the stars.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-10-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we might want to recruit some help -- there were a few people interested in dealing with those trees, I think? -- but it won't hurt to carry some stuff here to start with, I suppose...let's see how much there is to haul before deciding? There are limits to your lion form, aren't there?

[it's an informed guess, not a certainty]
spaceforged: (I need another route)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2017-10-03 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That's right. For now, I can only hold it for fifteen minutes. I haven't found out how might weight I can handle but I've been testing it little by little.

[It's true that it's better to access what there is to haul first. He can't refute that.]

But you're right. We'll see how much there is first.
rootbound: (colour me clear.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-10-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we probably don't want you changing back halfway and getting squished under a load of wood. I mean, it would be funny, but in completely the worst way.

[vern talks too much sometimes; conversational nerves. he stops himself from going further on this one with a visible effort, then beckons shiro along toward the storage site near the beach.]

C'mon.
spaceforged: (Good job team)

[personal profile] spaceforged 2017-10-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
[He can't help but laugh as he follows Vern to the storage area. The mental image shouldn't be funny. But, it is.]

Trust me, if everything else I've been through hasn't done me in. I'd survive being buried under a pile of wood.

Anyway, just how heavy is one sheet of bark?
rootbound: (but there's something eating at me.)

[personal profile] rootbound 2017-10-08 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not that heavy, I can lift a few without too much trouble.

[flexes one arm in demonstration. he clearly gets SOME exercise but also, is a somewhat underfed nerd]

We'll need a lot to line that space, though. It's mostly that it's an awkward load.
