[It's tough to live on an island that doesn't have many resources outside of the limited food sources and running streams. While Brie is aware of some other minor sources of food, like fish and frogs, one person exploring an island on their own means there are a lot of secret spots left to uncover. Despite adventuring for three years, her time on the hub itself has been much shorter, only staying for days or weeks at a time. Now that there are more people on this journey, covering ground is a lot easier.
Recently she's discovered another large estate -- much larger than her current shared mansion, which might also mean it has some supplies inside. On the morning of Day #, she's called together those who are hankering for more supplies in order to bring as much back as possible. Congrats, you get first dibs.
A. Upon approaching the house, the first thing that's noticeable is its size. It's all one story, but very flat and spacious. There are gardens in both the front and the rear, and upon entering (Brie might have enlisted you to help break the door down, oops) the inside is also quite vast. There are tons of rooms, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, two kitchens and other rooms that aren't even explorable because they need keys to be entered. Unless you can find these keys, that is?
B. Alternatively, or maybe even aside from exploring the house, Brie's also suggested that you do some exploring on your own. Again, she's one woman with limited time to scout the island herself. What can you find? What resources are there to be harvested? Will you share in this bounty, or keep it to yourself?]

[Eventually he gets his whimsical ass inside the house and trailing behind the rest of the group, immediately splitting off once more.
His exploring gets cut short as he practically trips over a milkcrate, gracefully settling on the ground and pulling the blanket off.
...enough time passes that he finds himself engrossed in what looks like a comic book and judging by the pile he is three issues in. The blanket is bunched off to the side and he seems to be concentrating, tilting his head this way and that.]
Are all aliens into this? [Should he notice anybody nearby, he'll speak without looking up.] I can't even read this.
B.) Outside
[On his own, John has a tendency to wander. Wandering often leads to being separated from his friends and other people but he doesn't mind. Eventually his wandering leads him to an open field of mushrooms, allowing him to crouch down and examine them.
Anyone who happens upon him will find him sitting in the middle of a fairyring formation of mushrooms, contemplating the cluster for a moment.]
So how do you tell if they're edible?
b
[This is not his actual opinion on it but honestly he just feels like he needs to be here to keep John out of trouble??]
no subject
[Hi Dirk, thank you for not letting him potentially poison himself. Again.]

Not how botany works, dude. [DIRK ISN'T A BOTANIST AND HE KNOWS THAT.] We need the tools, or someone with that kind of power.
no subject
I'm not Jake. Or Jade. [So. The green thumb skipped half of the Harleybert family is the point here.] What kind of tools though? Power would be harder to find but we could probably figure out a tool or even look through the rest of the house.

I could tell you a few ways, but it's still not recommended to eat any unless you're absolutely 100% positive. Trust me, you'd rather go hungry than have poison in your system.
[ He sounds like he's speaking from experience. Though, it's kind of rich coming from someone who drinks non-stop. ]

It's been a little over a week and I've already dealt with food poisoning. It's why I'm asking. [He gets that though, and it doesn't stop him from continuing.] I'm not really a fan of mushrooms anyway, but I didn't think they were something that could grow in space either.
b combo
[He bends down to examine a mushroom himself.]
Your--is he related to you? Well, anyway, Jake might know. He seemed to know a bit about plants.
no subject
We're related, yeah. [He's not going to go into the "how" because ectobiology is So Much, but it'd also be stupid to try to say that they aren't. They look too much alike to ignore that.] He grew up in the jungle so I think he knows how to identify plants a lot better than me. You've talked to him about it already?

Or possibly it's fairies.
[He says that dryly.]
no subject
[Fairies is a very viable option.] But then if there used to be tree stumps...what, the roots corroded into the earth? I sort of wish the items Genette gave us were able to test this kind of thing, but the whole island has been hit and miss.

[Madoka asks as she happens by, lugging a purse and a small, velvet case.]
no subject
[He's not going to go into the nature of what the comics are about beyond that because Madoka is sweet and pure and nobody needs to teach magical girls about other-world polyamory.]
no subject
That sounds promising! I mean ... if we're spending so much time working on our magic, it helps to have something fun to read in our downtime, right?
no subject
I think so. Especially if we are going to be traveling and stuff? I wish there was a way to decipher the language though. It might give us ideas about the rest of this universe. [But he notices the purse and case and he suddenly changes the topic.] What'd you find?
no subject
Oh! [Madoka sets the purse inside and opens the case, revealing a lovely, ornate looking blue tea set.]
I don't know how helpful it'll be in the long run. But, Orihime-san can make all kinds of food, and Haru-san is starting an herb garden! Tea's really good for helping you feel better if you're sick.
[and then she fishes an empty wallet, a makeup bag and a fan out of the purse. well ... the purse will be good for holding supplies, anyway.]

That's how he stumbles upon John. Waver moves over to one side, so he doesn't give John a scare.]
A field guide, I think. Mushrooms you don't know can probably kill you.

Neither have I. I suspect that mushroom experiments might be something to wait on, just out of a sense of self preservation.

Even if we saw other animals eating these, I think we'd have a good idea of safety. I haven't seen much besides the boars and crabs though.
