[It's tough to live on an island that doesn't have many resources outside of the limited food sources and running streams. While Brie is aware of some other minor sources of food, like fish and frogs, one person exploring an island on their own means there are a lot of secret spots left to uncover. Despite adventuring for three years, her time on the hub itself has been much shorter, only staying for days or weeks at a time. Now that there are more people on this journey, covering ground is a lot easier.

Recently she's discovered another large estate -- much larger than her current shared mansion, which might also mean it has some supplies inside. On the morning of Day #, she's called together those who are hankering for more supplies in order to bring as much back as possible. Congrats, you get first dibs.

A. Upon approaching the house, the first thing that's noticeable is its size. It's all one story, but very flat and spacious. There are gardens in both the front and the rear, and upon entering (Brie might have enlisted you to help break the door down, oops) the inside is also quite vast. There are tons of rooms, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, two kitchens and other rooms that aren't even explorable because they need keys to be entered. Unless you can find these keys, that is?

B. Alternatively, or maybe even aside from exploring the house, Brie's also suggested that you do some exploring on your own. Again, she's one woman with limited time to scout the island herself. What can you find? What resources are there to be harvested? Will you share in this bounty, or keep it to yourself?]

a. house explorations

[ in one of the kitchens, dave manages to find in one of the cupboards a vintage metal lunchbox from some sort of alien cartoon series. he opens it, stares for a moment, and then just. closes it gently. then he stares at the lunchbox proper. ]

Guess I can go dump it out and then wash it. [ it's to himself and not anyone else, muttered nearly inaudible, tracing the curve of one of the faded but still stupid colorful designs on the front. ]

b. quiet lagoon

[ when he wanders off on his own away from the house, however, dave will eventually be able to be run to ground next to a small lagoon near the mountain closest the base camp. he'll hang out there for the later half of the day without giving much warning to anyone as to where he disappeared to, and will likely linger until evening.

the lagoon is small and picturesque, with apparently farmable resources and beauty. there's fish swimming in the water and some turtles, frogs, and other pond creatures.

there's also a large stone bench off to the side of the lagoon itself, and dave's perched on it crosslegged, the now-clean lunchbox off to the side along with his backpack and his sword. he's got his sketchbook open on his lap and is doodling. however, he has more or less given up art practice for the day and is just drawing some terrible mini comics featuring the linked characters and styles and then occasional bouts of meaningless geometric designs or a collection of shapes that don't seem to make much sense pieced together.

he's listening to the mp3 player he acquired and apparently has found some way to charge (...presumably magical with the help of friends), but he'll look up when anyone approaches and give them a kind of nod. ]

[For once, he was not seeking Dave out. He was just seeking somewhere quiet, away from the group for a moment. Somewhere to process everything he has been faced with. So when he sees Dave and gets the nod, he pauses.]

Is this okay?

[His hidden eyes flicker over to the SBAHJ drawings reflexively.]

...free island. Unless someone instituted some sort of tyranny in the last half hour. [ he doesn't remove the headphones but dials the volume low enough he'll hear anything important, flipping to a new page in the book and refocusing on the pond. dave doesn't continue doodling immediately, simply watching the turtles and frogs exist. he does tap the pen he was using against his knee in either time to the music or nerves or irritation. hard to tell which. ]

[It's very, very hard to tell. What Dirk opts to do is sit closer to the lakeside, near the turtles and frogs. He coaxes one of the turtles over with a small scrap of food.

He has with him some scraps of paper from Minato's notebook and an orange crayon similarly borrowed. For lack of a proper hard surface, he puts the paper on the turtle's back and starts writing things with his left hand, while he soothes the turtle to stay in place with his right.]

[ once dave confirms dirk doesn't seem to intend to start up a conversation, he stops paying as much attention to him. he can't ignore him completely, and pauses when dirk starts using the turtle as a desk (what the fuck?) but he can at least relax enough to start doing something else.

after a minute he starts lining the paper, evenly spaced. ]

[Nah, Dirk will let Dave doodle in peace. He's a little curious, but he wants to give Dave space? Dirk is doing math. It's very calming, because he is a nerd.

He is also thinking about adopting his turtle desk.]

[ Beeline to the kitchen the moment he stepped foot into the house, tbh. Minato looks over at Dave open the lunchbox, stare... close it again. And not say anything about what was inside. But Minato can take silence for disappointment even though he doesn't catch what Dave mutters after. ]

Oatmeal raisin instead of chocolate chip?

No. I wouldn't mind oatmeal raisin. It's just, you know, bugs.

[ COCKROACH COLONY. ]

[ Minato's disgust is evident in the slight clench of his jaw, but there's some hope that lights in his eyes. ]

If there's bugs, then food's been left in there recently.

[ People might have been here until recently. ]

[parodeity]

Yeah, they wouldn't have started up a colony without somethin' to eat. ...Maybe. Do you think there have been more people besides us Brie just didn't mention?

[ he has no idea how much they're trusting her on the whole yet, okay. ]

Yeah, I do.

[ Minato gestures with a tilt of the head, around the kitchen in general, the house in general. ]

There's huts. Houses. Junk lying around everywhere... some pretty modern, too.

[ Qrow is mildly amused at the thought that this kid might actually like the stupid cartoon design on the lunch box. There's certainly nothing wrong with it if it's true; plus a container of some sorts always has other practical uses. ]

I don't suppose you found the matching schoolbag that goes with it yet.

Nah. If you locate that or a thermos, let me know, will you? I'll be all set for my first day at school.

[ according to the movies and dry sarcasm, anyway.

school would have been a pretty cool thing to have attended. ]

I'd worry about finding some food to put in it first.

[parodeity]

[ ...oh right food. he probably hasn't eaten since breakfast, uh. ]

If you're hungry I'm pretty sure some of the food-summoners are wanderin' about. I mean, all two of them. At least one of them is?

[drunkle]

I'm not desperate enough to eat magically summoned food yet.

[ He would sing a different tune if it were booze though. ]

And I wasn't talking about me anyway.

[He's grown used to keeping an eye out for his friends. It's second nature now and a sign of him growing as a leader, doing his best to track his team and know their whereabouts.

That's why it's only after checking the house and noticing that Dave's gone that John leaves. It's by sheer accident that he finds himself approaching the lagoon but it's not hard to notice that this was the place he was looking for. The lagoon itself is almost pretty, actually, so when he approaches he doesn't even say anything to Dave. There's a slight smile when his friend looks up but he brushes past him to examine the area, crouching to watch the fish and say hello to the pond creatures.

With that though he'll then approach the bench and without thinking and without warning settle himself next to Dave before glancing at the short SBaHJ comics. There's a snort of amusement before he shakes his head, making himself comfortable and opening up one of the issues of the comic books he found up at the house.

He won't say much unless Dave feels like talking, but at the same time it may be a battle of impulse if they have to sit in silence for too long. What will you do, Dave?]

[ well. what dave does is slide his backpack and such off the bench to his feet to make more room for john, and continue his drawings? he does glance over to see what john's reading, and drag his headphones down to hang around his neck and shut off the mp3 player, just in case john feels like talking.

...but also he doesn't do much more than knock his elbow into john's side lightly for the shaking his head and peer at the comics, yeah. ]

[windeity]

[He's trying to get better about companionable silences, since he's starting to see that Dave doesn't really have problems with those? It's not in John's wheelhouse, seeing how John is a kid who doesn't know how to shut the fuck up and sometimes chatters incessantly, but he's doing his best.

It doesn't last very long, but he did his best.]

It's been a while since I've read one of these. I wonder if people in this universe would get it any better than the rest of us.

Maybe, since they'd probably be able to actually read whatever the fuck language that is. What does it seem to be about?

[ since he wasn't being that nosy. ]

An accountant who's a superhero? [He turns the comic book upside down like it'll help him read it better.] And he's always saving these two people. I think I might bring them back to Rose, actually. She'd probably like these.

[No surprise, the kitchens don't have food. Waver sighs as he closes another cabinet, just in time to hear Dave talk to himself.]

Wait, there's something in that?

Nothin' grand. Just, you know, bugs. What've you found so far?

[ he'll like scoot the lunchbox over if waver wants to check himself, but. ]

[Waver holds up a hand. He believes Dave about the bugs.]

Mostly just wine glasses and old linen napkins. Nothing useful.
