[WORLD ONE | SEPTEMBER INTRO LOG]

Who: The new coven members, old blood & Palai people
Where: In and around the city land of Aimintas
When: Day 61
Open/Closed: Open to All

  • The initial setting information found here should be utilized for threads here.
  • There's no official OOC account for the Palai people. You're free to roleplay their actions and reactions on your own, as in depth as you want -- asking questions, hand-waved interactions, becoming best friends. The new world is your oyster!
  • All characters are told briefly what their powers are by Genette -- no extemporaneous details. For instance, if your character has the ability to detect lies, they'll be told as such -- no warning about limitations, repurcussions or the like. They'll also be given a variant of this letter so they aren't totally ignorant of the situation -- though of course adapt this letter to the current setting and surroundings of the game.

This setting may be familiar to you -- maybe you caught a glimpse of it when you first visited. Maybe this is your first time experiencing this weird world and the panic is setting in. If you're totally lost, a tall human woman with a long scroll of paper will stop by to give you the run down. She'll also give you a letter, which may give you more questions than answers since the information is a wee out of date. (Maybe someone else can fill in some gaps for you).

What you may not know is that this world recently experienced something of a tragedy. You wouldn't be able to guess this based on the festive energy in the air. The main marketplace where you've shown up finished reconstruction last night, and after grief comes joy to the Palai -- those lizard creatures you see wandering around. They're now hosting a festival to celebrate their success and the lives of those both still present and those lost.

It's also a chance for them to host one of those big celebrations like they'd previously seen in human books. However, their resources are limited -- don't blame them if things are a little cut-and-paste!

A ▢ One of the preferred methods for masking grief in the Palai world is playing games. Because the Palai are still on their shrimp kick (the old blood characters are probably sick of them at this point), the shrimp are being used as part of a few festival games:

      • Shrimp Scoop: Live prawns have been placed in a tank of water. Instead of paper scoops, players are handed small scraps of cloth which they may then dive into the six-foot tall tank to try and grab the prawns with -- no hands! And no magic or your prawn will be revoked. For extra incentive, sacks of golden coins have been tied to the prawns. These coins can be exchanged for goods and prizes, though what your character receives for their coin -- no matter how bland or wacky -- is up to your character.
      • Shrimp Shock: Dead shrimp have been placed in a wading pool. Your character and another character enter the pool while Elto shock the shrimp out of the water. With about 20 shrimp in the water, the character with the most shrimps caught out of the air wins an allotment of coins.
      • Whack-a-Shrimp: Eltos have powered six large, stuffed shrimp dolls (made with cloth), that will pop out of cut holes in a large game board. Hit the shrimp as many times as you can in 30 seconds, and your number will amount to the coins you receive.
      • Shrimp Fest: Is your character a big eater? Your character is given a plate of cooked jumbo prawns. If they can eat all 50 jumbo prawns in 30 seconds, they win 100 coins.

B ▢ What good is a festival if there's no face painting? Don't worry, you have more options than shrimp. Palai have an assortment of paints and are making colourful designs on both their kin and coven members -- your request may not look exactly as you want it to since they have bumpy hands and claws that get in the way.

This is all pretty juvenile, but fear not! For the mature sort and adults of Aimintas, there's a more quiet part set up that may cater to your older interests. A softer atmosphere, away from the excitement of things. If you want to wind down from the thrill of being magicked away to a new world, this is probably the best way for it.

C ▢ Fans of alcohol will find that the Palai have broken out their best spirits for themselves and the coven. Some of these aged spirits are decades old and have aged accordingly, giving them a bitter flavor with a nasty bite of alcohol. Others are more recently distilled or imbued with magic for an extra buzz. Accordingly, some drinks can get you inebriated pretty quickly. Some drinks are essentially giddy truth serums. Others may have an effect on magic or telepathy. Pick your poison!

D ▢ The environment in this more secluded area of the marketplace is supposed to be more relaxed, but it's also the best place to sit if you want a front row seat to the fireworks exhibit the remaining Eltos are putting on. Through balls of dye and their electrical powers, they're quickly blowing up the sky with arcs of color that rain down in the form of bright pieces of glitter once the spectacle is over.

They also have a special service they're offering -- the Eltos have a grasp on electrical magic, which means they can draw certain things in the sky with these dye balls. If you have a request for a written message or a drawing of some sort, they'd be happy to comply with your wish!

For the real adult experience, however, you may want to check out the large rolling cart that Palai are pushing around the marketplace, landing it in the fireworks area. This cart is filled with all of the eggs that were a product of their mating season, and this part of Aimintas is the warmest.

E ▢ For newbies and those who missed the egg train, your character can instead be Egg Parent for a Night. The Palai are holding their eggs to warm them for the evening, but (like most parents with new babies) they're certainly trying to show off their creations. Hold them, pass them around -- or maybe even act a fool and fend off a fiercely angry Palai parent.

Finally, the Palai are getting used to the standard familiar faces, so they aren't unaware that there are quite a few new faces in the mix. Based on how familiar your character is, they'll receive a nice little gift from the Palai. Older coven members will receive a scrolled parchment that lists them as honorary citizens of Aimintas and a handmade, harden clay sculpture of their likeness. It may not look a lot like them, but they tried.

F ▢ What about new members? Well, they get the Aimintas Starter Kit: an unmarked vial containing Palai mating pheromones (makes your character affectionate, etc), a bag of cooked shrimp, a collection of their baked goods and energy drinks (containing Elto magic that makes magical abilities hard to handle), and a harmless paper flower. Your character likely isn't used to the dangers of some of these items, so maybe someone can help them...or is it too late?

G ▢ Because the Palai recognize new faces, these new coven members will be dragged to other coven members who they do recognize. In an effort to help make introductions, the Palai are trying to connect new members with old members in order to foster friendships. Say hi to a new, awkwardly introduced covenmate...?

H ▢ Wildcard! How will your character interact with this new and unusual world?

[It takes a minute but Souda slinks hesitantly after him, poking at the fridge like he's not sure if it'll come to life and bite his hand off. It doesn't, because it's a fridge, but nevertheless. He puts his hand against the parts left awkwardly, then pulls it back and just stares at his palm.]

You sure this wasn't a defective fridge? It was really just a normal fridge?

[Did I actually do that? is what he's basically asking.

Even though you're the one who planned on doing it, Souda...]

... Do you want to try again?

[Offering might be a mistake, because Souda seems rather accident-prone and highstrung, but letting him run around without any idea what he's doing with his magic might be just as bad. The Palai are still just starting to get their technology on compared to where Lenka comes from, but there's still a number of more rudimentary machines in the city that Souda could have run-ins with.

Like, he'd feel bizarrely responsible if the guy got himself squashed by one of the hot-air balloons or something?? (But more importantly, even if they've inflicted losses on the Uvi several times now, they're a warlike and terribly persistent race; they could find themselves in the midst of battle again at any time.)

Lenka nods to himself, and then two more refrigerators materialize beside them almost simultaneously. Their arrival is a little more haphazard; the third bumps the second and they both rattle as they settle on the ground. Oops.]

You took out all the screws last time, right? Maybe something else...

[What else can you do with fridges and magic? He's admittedly a little curious, too.]

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
    Gah!

[MORE FRIDGES well at least they're only fridges. Souda scratches his head after the startled outburst and stares at Lenka before looking back at the fridges. Okay.] This'd be more exciting if they were monster trucks or somethin', you know...

[But exciting's probably not what would be best for Souda right now, even if he'd argue that. He approaches one of the fridges, squinting at it. What he doesn't realise is that it's best for him to start with something like this, something that he's familiar with, even if he doesn't have an interest in fridges.] Guess I can start with taking apart the cooling unit.

[He's going to open up one first, to get at the inside... Let's see if there's more foodstuffs. AT LEAST HE OPENS THE DOOR WARILY, KEEPING HIS PRECIOUS BEAUTIFUL FACE OUT OF RANGE.]

[High-strung, easily startled, and into monster trucks...?]

    ... I don't know if I'd want monster trucks.

[Lenka has to shake his head a little. Given some of the things that have happened to him and his magic so far, summoning monster trucks (in midair) seems like it would be a really bad idea somehow. They could both use less excitement at this point!]

Magic is hard to handle, even with refrigerators. Be careful.

[And that's probably not a warning he ever thought he'd have to give, much less multiple times. This is his life now. He'd feel kind of like a kitchen appliance salesman, if he'd ever met one of those. For the moment, he follows Souda's lead and opens the door to the remaining refrigerator. There's a lot of fruit in his, and one or two mystery containers. Souda's is filled with what look like pickling jars containing literally everything from actual pickles to small... rodents...?

Okay, vengeful ice cream fridge might be the best one, actually.]

[CLOSES THE DOOR TO HIS FRIDGE he can't deal with pickled rodents.

He's coming to your fridge instead, Lenka!]
What the hell, why's there normal stuff in here! Ugh, that other fridge is gross.

[He's just going to reach into this one instead for the cooling unit, avoiding touching any mystery containers. He doesn't trust these fridges completely.]

I'm just takin' out the coolin' unit this time.
probablynoteren: (logic comes after e7 tbh)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-11 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
[...... what kind of face is that, Souda, goodness.

Well, now Lenka has to go see just exactly what's going on with the other fridge, whether he's messed up his magic (again?) or not -- so they can switch. He peers in warily only to be met with the weird specimen(??) jars, pickles, and other regular foods mixed with unmentionables. Huh. After a couple of blinks, he shuts the fridge.

It's not all that appetizing, but at least it's nothing dangerous.]

... Sometimes they come with stranger things. [being real reassuring here; but it's true, he's Seen Things at this point] But they're usually safe.

[Or usually dead! Same difference. He'll come back around now and watch to see what Souda does to the cooling unit. And watch Souda in case he somehow makes an enemy of the fridge again. Multitasking!]

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-11 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
    What kind of stranger things...?

[Souda glances over one shoulder at him skeptically. So far, it seems safe. There's the sounds of soft clicking and sounds like something's being turned (ie, screws) and coming loose as Souda holds the cooling unit.

Soon enough, the square just... pops right off. Harmlessly. Nice.

He'll pull it out and put his hand on it again, to unscrew the back panel and get at the guts of it.]
probablynoteren: (why does he look 12 here)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-11 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
    Uh... teeth. Hairbrushes. Plushies?

[Maybe, technically, they're not stranger than pickled lizards or whatever that was he'd seen a glimpse of near the back of this particular fridge; but if you think about it, pickled specimens and other things in jars seem more like they'd need to be refrigerated than a hairbrush or a stuffed animal.

It's actually kind of hard to classify what counts as fridge strange, at this point. It's probably only going to get worse, huh? Magic. Honestly.

Lenka shakes his head and comes over to look at the cooling unit. He's never actually seen a fridge neatly disassembled, just broken ones and half-gutted ones lying around sometimes in very old buildings. If he's lucky. So this is kind of interesting -- he's going to vaguely start nibbling on strawberries as he watches.]

Oh. You're going to disassemble all of it?

    [It's pretty much just curiosity.]
    adjustable: (s ❇ hex)

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
    Teeth?

    [Gross.

Souda shakes his head, nose scrunched in disgust, and glances away from what he's doing up to Lenka. He works off the back panel of the cooling unit, exposing the unit proper to him.]

I'm just gonna do this part. Well, I mean, I could disassemble the whole fridge part-by-part, but...

[It's a fridge... It's not as exciting. That said, cooling units and the way fridges keep their temperatures low is vaguely interesting.]
probablynoteren: (logic comes after e7 tbh)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-13 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
    Fake teeth.

[Which is slightly better than real teeth, but not by much. He wouldn't be surprised to see real teeth either one of these days-- hey, at least, no other body parts yet. Let's not go into that and focus on the cooling unit!]

... Hmm. Can you do anything else with it?

[It makes him wonder, that's all -- regardless of how exciting cold boxes aren't, he keeps thinking back to the fact that they're talking technology manipulation, and not technology dissection. Souda's free to finish his disassembly, but in the meantime Lenka's going to think aloud and prod a little.]
    adjustable: (f ❇ maintenance)

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-13 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
    [Dissection is his thing, Lenka.

Souda pauses and turns the cooling unit over in his hands, looking back at Lenka with a small shrug of his shoulder.]
    I ain't sure. Uh, let's see...

[He squints down at it. What does he want to do with this? Hm. Hmmm. But eventually, the metal vrrs softly, dispensing a puff of cold air. Not... a lot of cold air, considering it's half-disassembled, but hey.]

Oh. [THAT WAS SOMETHING RIGHT but not very impressive.]
probablynoteren: (why does he look 12 here)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-14 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Convenient dissection is actually pretty interesting, or could be, but like Souda said it's something that could also be accomplished with tools; as many different absurd things as he's seen since he got here, Lenka's always curious to see the things others can do with magic that feel more like magic.

Like, he's not really expecting the fridge to start tapdancing, since that seems like it would be a lot harder. And fridges don't have feet. Details. Still, he thinks there could be more to this type of magic.

Souda's little trick does make him sit back a bit in surprise, and then he shuffles in again to put a hand on the cooling unit. Does it feel colder now...?]

You can make it work without power?

[It's not flashy, but it might actually be handy down the road.]
    adjustable: (s ❇ ratchet)

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yeah. If the electricity ain't there, all I gotta do is make the parts move without 'em, so...

[Souda trails off, blinking as though he just realised what he did. He looks down at the cooling unit sitting on his knees, says huh and nods absently to himself. THAT'S OKAY. THAT'S PRETTY OKAY.

Maybe this can be interesting after all.]
probablynoteren: (logic comes after e7 tbh)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-16 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Lenka watches the slow epiphany with an expression that's sort of between amused and bemused -- he hadn't thought technology manipulation would go quite this far either, but it's not too far off from what the Elto can do, minus all the literal shock factor, is it? Maybe they can ask for tips or other things to experiment with.

He can't actually summon anything else, anyway, except by accident. Normally.]

The place we came here from... It's a deserted island. There's some old buildings, but I don't think there's power.

[He's not completely certain they'll be going back there any time soon, but it's an idle thought when they have downtime like this. It would be a lot easier if Qri or her handmaidens would tell them anything.]
    adjustable: (f ❇ surgical)

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-17 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ughhh, seriously?! Seriously, deserted island again?!

[Wow it's almost like he has experience with islands.

Souda groans down at the cooling unit in his hand because obviously this is the reason for his suffering.]
I'm gonna have to stock up while I'm here, aren't I?!
probablynoteren: (why does he look 12 here)

    [personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-19 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
    Again...

[Again?? Now he's really curious, just how many of them have way too much island in their lives, now or otherwise? Souda's certainly not the first (and probably not the last), not to mention they still haven't figured out whatever's going on with the Uvi island up yonder. He assumes it's related to the Uvi... Anyway.

It's probably a coincidence, but it's an odd thing to have in common.]

Did you... also come from an island?
    adjustable: (pic#10676558)

    [personal profile] adjustable 2017-09-19 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
    Uh--

[Souda blinks at him. What, Lenka too? He thinks that they're probably in pretty different situations, but the island has been his reality for the last little while.] Yeah. This tropical island, it was only me'n a group of people there. Classmates.

[There's more to it than that, but...]
