[WORLD ONE | DING DONG THE FISH IS DEAD]

Who: Coven members and the Palai
Where: Celebrating the Uvi going boom-boom
When: Day 67
Open/Closed: Open to All
OOC Note:

  • The initial setting information found here should be utilized for threads here.
  • There's no official OOC account for the Palai people. You're free to roleplay their actions and reactions on your own, as in depth as you want -- asking questions, hand-waved interactions, becoming best friends. The new world is your oyster!

For decades, the Palai have had to deal with the threat of the Uvi invading their homes, killing their families and returning 30 days later. After the coven found their way to Aimintas, the Palai found that the threat wasn't so...threatening.

After the last attack, with many more Palai lost as compared to previous Uvi instances, some Palai had lost hope. Now, after seeing their nemesis blown to bits and falling out of the ocean, their faith in safety is restored.

While the Uvi are still committed (by and large) to learning more about barriers and other forms of safety, the time for focusing on serious things has passed. It will return, but tonight? They celebrate.

Unlike their last, shrimpy festival, this party has a lot more going for it. The Palai have had time to process the events and prepare themselves for a grand celebration. The Palai know how to party, but you ain't seen nothin' like this.

A ▢ As a birthday tradition, the Palai give the birthday lizard a special concoction. It contains Elto energy and a combination of found herbs that can easily be located in Aimintas. When these herbs are combined with the Elto energy, they create a sort of...hallucinogenic experience. It's supposed to feel extremely relaxing and give the Palai pleasant visions, but in human bodies it's essentially just getting high. There are vials of these being passed around like candy, so don't worry about anyone running out.

B ▢ Despite the adults getting lit, there are obviously a lot of baby Palai on the lose. Responsible coven members who have their own babies will have the ability to let them run wild and play with their lizardy cousins. If you want to spend time with your baby, the nursery caretakers have platters of crackers with mushy foods adorning them -- these are essentially candy to a tiny Palai. They may also be tempted by other foods present at the festivities, but you can avoid them getting a tummy ache if you have a watchful eye.

C ▢ Speaking of food, there certainly is a lot of it. There are large grills being heated by the newly found bone structures. These hold shrimp and fish, grilled vegetable skewers and other foods. Instead of the Palai doing the serving, the coven members and other Palai are instead encouraged to utilize their own raw ingredients (which includes several large sharks, dolphins, etc.) in whatever fashion they choose. It's essentially a "build-your-own-kabob" station with no limits.

D ▢ Because the party is lasting on into the night, some Elto have decided to light the marketplace with some of the bone structures they found by powering them and inserting them into small cloth bags that they then magically levitate around. While they provide a powerful light source that can increase the party's longevity, they're also floating live wires. Bump into one of these and you'll get a nasty shock! This is doubly concerning since Palai babies are fascinated by following these floating "toys."

E ▢ The Palai, feeling more familial and supportive of their ideals than ever, haven't let go of the whole family/romance pushing on the coven. Their newest attempt is a bit of a prank (probably due to high Palais) who have taken magic bone structures and tied thick strings to the spines that poke out of them. At the end of these strings are loops that they're quickly slipping around the wrists of coven members they find. You may find that you're suddenly magically connected to someone -- or two other people if you're lucky enough -- by a magical thread that's VERY hard to slip out of or break.

F ▢ Wildcard Part 1: Other previous party prompts can also be considered here, from the rolls that make magic go haywire to the aged liquor that causes a bit more than a headache.

G ▢ Wildcard Part 2: Any prompt you like!

[It really does remind her a lot of using the transporters on the Bunker and Earth. Given how much physical running around she's had to do on Aimintas, there's almost something nostalgic about this.

But then they're on the island, and 2B notes the tools nearby curiously. She's really never had an opportunity to fish like this. Of course, given the blindfold, it's arguable just how curious she actually looks.]

... Let's stick with the edge of the island for now. [Given the tools here, she has her doubts about a boat being able to support her weight here, and she'd prefer not to sink to the bottom of the ocean today okay.]

Got any sense of how to use a rod? It'll probably be easiest out here.

[It doesn't require going into the water, which he's still worried about her doing. He can handle that; he is not basically Iron Boots incarnate.]

I should be able to manage. [She's built to be adaptable, ready to respond no matter what the situation, after all. And besides, if it's outdated technology, that should mean it shouldn't be too difficult to figure it out! Right........]

[He hands her a fishing rod. For his part, he picks up one of his own and attaches a lure to it. Then he casts it into the ocean with a familiar expertise.

    Let's Go Fishing, 2B.]

[She watches him carefully in order to mimic what he does, attaching a lure to the rod in her hands and trying to cast it into the ocean. It's not like she's bad at controlling her strength, something she's had to make even more use of given the people around her, but she thinks that throwing the line in with a little extra push couldn't hurt.

Which is why it goes much, much farther than Dirk's does...........

    But now they're Fishing!]

[Like... it won't hurt? Dirk kind of watches it go like, "Huh." And then.........................

He sits in silence because this is what fishing is. Good job, guys.]
apatheia: (we don't talk about the sidequests)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-09 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Truly, the perfect way to bond and socialize with someone... Not talking at all and just fishing. Real riveting content right here.

Although after a few hours she at least has the presence of mind to ask:]

Do you need to eat? [Humans need to eat at least three times a day, right?? And they've been here a while, so maybe he should....]

[It makes him pause. And look up at her.]

Uh. In general, or right now.
apatheia: (lowkey don't wanna be here rn)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-10 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Right now. Or soon, I guess. [When was his last meal.... How long are humans supposed to go between meals anyways........]
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (no dude)

    [He's still baffled.]

A little, I guess? I can go without for a pretty long time.

[Humans sometimes learn to be good at fasting.]
    apatheia: (so that's... a tshirt.....)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-11 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
    ... Is that healthy?

[She's trying to be concerned and look out for humans okay!! Maybe she should've done more research before she tried talking about this......]

    [UH...]

Potentially not. But it's a useful survival skill to have developed in case resources are scarce or difficult to access. It allows us to conserve the energy we'd need to achieve sustenance when it becomes available.
apatheia: (another day another fucking goliath)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-13 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm... I guess that might be important for here. [They seem to have a fair amount of resources, but she doesn't know how sustainable it'd be to just hunt the animals here.]
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (this happy friendly solid)

    [personal profile] splinten 2017-10-14 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
    [He nods in agreement.]

It's better for humans, especially developing ones, if they have reliable sources of all the required nutrients. If we were in a situation of limited resources, for example, I'd recommend focusing on getting the appropriate nutrition to the children first and reducing the amount the adults consume, since it will have less of a long-term negative effect on us.

    [Dirk you're 16]
apatheia: (another day another fucking goliath)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-15 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Just what marks the difference between a child and adult?? This is honestly something she doesn't know though, and now seems as good a time as any to get clarification.]

When does a human stop being a child and becoming an adult? [Tfw it sounds like such a metaphorical question but she actually means it in the most literal way possible. Human growth is so foreign to her.]
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr ("got to church!")

    [personal profile] splinten 2017-10-16 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Yet a Philosophical answer is what she gets.]

It's a relatively complicated question. Legally, the age of majority is determined on a country-by-country basis and therefore depends on the nation. It's sixteen in some, eighteen in others, twenty one in others still. There are also a variety of biological determinants. One common historical way of measuring adulthood, and one which agrees with the biology of basically every species out there, is when a human reaches puberty, which is to say when they're able to reproduce. That's somewhere between ten and twelve in most humans. The human brain, however, continues to develop well into the mid-twenties, with the prefrontal cortex—key for measured decision-making and other 'not being a fucking idiot' cognition—interpreted as fully developing at age twenty-five or so. However, brain development, like puberty, differs from person to person. There's also a statistically significant difference between the rate of maturation in the biologically male and the biologically female. Those with a majority of biological characteristics associated with the male sex tend to mature later than those whose biological characteristics primarily align with the female sex.
apatheia: (do you even hear yourself)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-17 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
[At least this'll be more helpful to her in the long run...]

Human maturation is much more complicated than I thought... [She's seen a few wild animals in different stages of their growth cycle, but it's not like she's ever seen one the entire way through. Besides, humans are much more complicated creatures than a moose or a boar.] In that case, how old are you, and would you consider yourself to be an adult or a child?
    splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (was i when i wrote)

    [personal profile] splinten 2017-10-17 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sixteen. The thing is, most children are looked after by some kind of guardian. That isn't always the case, but 'taking care of yourself' is a key component of how 21st century Western society understands adulthood. And since I raised my own damn self from the start and haven't ever relied on a caretaker, I'd consider myself an adult.

[--Dirk Strider, a person on record as preferring to nap cuddled up to the plush toy he's had since infancy]
apatheia: (we don't talk about the sidequests)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-10-23 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... So then if you're capable of taking care of yourself, you're most likely qualified to be an adult no matter what age you are.

[That's a. Very simplified way of looking at it??? But she sees his point, and it makes sense to her. The machine children definitely came across to her as children given their lack of ability with... most things really, let alone taking care of themselves. That being a key component for adulthood makes sense.]
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (he wants us to practice)

    [personal profile] splinten 2017-10-23 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Right. Perspectives can vary, but in many cases how a culture decides a person is an adult is based on that person's ability to stop being supported by their parents and begin supporting themselves.
apatheia: (fuck forests' ugly lighting 2k17)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-11-01 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
Would you say that everyone here qualifies as an adult? Given that we're all responsible for our own well-being.
splinten: appl-juice42 @ tumblr (ok yo'ure obvioubly doing this)

    [personal profile] splinten 2017-11-02 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
We're also in a group. Any lack of ability in one department can be compensated by others. I can't say whether or not everyone here would be able to survive on their own, although that isn't necessary to the definition of adulthood in the sense that humans come into adulthood in a fully formed society at most times. For example, most humans aren't expected to grow their own food by the 21st century. They're considered adults because they are expected to be able to gather the means to purchase that food.

That's a long way of saying that I wouldn't trust everyone here to take care of themselves.
apatheia: (suicide sounds good right about now)

    [personal profile] apatheia 2017-11-03 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... The line between childhood and adulthood is much more complicated than I thought.

[She's learned a lot, and yet she feels like she doesn't have an answer either... But maybe that's just because she knows so little about how a human would view things.]

Thank you for your explanation though. It's been very informative.
