[WORLD ONE | SEPTEMBER INTRO LOG]

Who: The new coven members, old blood & Palai people
Where: In and around the city land of Aimintas
When: Day 61
Open/Closed: Open to All

  • The initial setting information found here should be utilized for threads here.
  • There's no official OOC account for the Palai people. You're free to roleplay their actions and reactions on your own, as in depth as you want -- asking questions, hand-waved interactions, becoming best friends. The new world is your oyster!
  • All characters are told briefly what their powers are by Genette -- no extemporaneous details. For instance, if your character has the ability to detect lies, they'll be told as such -- no warning about limitations, repurcussions or the like. They'll also be given a variant of this letter so they aren't totally ignorant of the situation -- though of course adapt this letter to the current setting and surroundings of the game.

This setting may be familiar to you -- maybe you caught a glimpse of it when you first visited. Maybe this is your first time experiencing this weird world and the panic is setting in. If you're totally lost, a tall human woman with a long scroll of paper will stop by to give you the run down. She'll also give you a letter, which may give you more questions than answers since the information is a wee out of date. (Maybe someone else can fill in some gaps for you).

What you may not know is that this world recently experienced something of a tragedy. You wouldn't be able to guess this based on the festive energy in the air. The main marketplace where you've shown up finished reconstruction last night, and after grief comes joy to the Palai -- those lizard creatures you see wandering around. They're now hosting a festival to celebrate their success and the lives of those both still present and those lost.

It's also a chance for them to host one of those big celebrations like they'd previously seen in human books. However, their resources are limited -- don't blame them if things are a little cut-and-paste!

A ▢ One of the preferred methods for masking grief in the Palai world is playing games. Because the Palai are still on their shrimp kick (the old blood characters are probably sick of them at this point), the shrimp are being used as part of a few festival games:

      • Shrimp Scoop: Live prawns have been placed in a tank of water. Instead of paper scoops, players are handed small scraps of cloth which they may then dive into the six-foot tall tank to try and grab the prawns with -- no hands! And no magic or your prawn will be revoked. For extra incentive, sacks of golden coins have been tied to the prawns. These coins can be exchanged for goods and prizes, though what your character receives for their coin -- no matter how bland or wacky -- is up to your character.
      • Shrimp Shock: Dead shrimp have been placed in a wading pool. Your character and another character enter the pool while Elto shock the shrimp out of the water. With about 20 shrimp in the water, the character with the most shrimps caught out of the air wins an allotment of coins.
      • Whack-a-Shrimp: Eltos have powered six large, stuffed shrimp dolls (made with cloth), that will pop out of cut holes in a large game board. Hit the shrimp as many times as you can in 30 seconds, and your number will amount to the coins you receive.
      • Shrimp Fest: Is your character a big eater? Your character is given a plate of cooked jumbo prawns. If they can eat all 50 jumbo prawns in 30 seconds, they win 100 coins.

B ▢ What good is a festival if there's no face painting? Don't worry, you have more options than shrimp. Palai have an assortment of paints and are making colourful designs on both their kin and coven members -- your request may not look exactly as you want it to since they have bumpy hands and claws that get in the way.

This is all pretty juvenile, but fear not! For the mature sort and adults of Aimintas, there's a more quiet part set up that may cater to your older interests. A softer atmosphere, away from the excitement of things. If you want to wind down from the thrill of being magicked away to a new world, this is probably the best way for it.

C ▢ Fans of alcohol will find that the Palai have broken out their best spirits for themselves and the coven. Some of these aged spirits are decades old and have aged accordingly, giving them a bitter flavor with a nasty bite of alcohol. Others are more recently distilled or imbued with magic for an extra buzz. Accordingly, some drinks can get you inebriated pretty quickly. Some drinks are essentially giddy truth serums. Others may have an effect on magic or telepathy. Pick your poison!

D ▢ The environment in this more secluded area of the marketplace is supposed to be more relaxed, but it's also the best place to sit if you want a front row seat to the fireworks exhibit the remaining Eltos are putting on. Through balls of dye and their electrical powers, they're quickly blowing up the sky with arcs of color that rain down in the form of bright pieces of glitter once the spectacle is over.

They also have a special service they're offering -- the Eltos have a grasp on electrical magic, which means they can draw certain things in the sky with these dye balls. If you have a request for a written message or a drawing of some sort, they'd be happy to comply with your wish!

For the real adult experience, however, you may want to check out the large rolling cart that Palai are pushing around the marketplace, landing it in the fireworks area. This cart is filled with all of the eggs that were a product of their mating season, and this part of Aimintas is the warmest.

E ▢ For newbies and those who missed the egg train, your character can instead be Egg Parent for a Night. The Palai are holding their eggs to warm them for the evening, but (like most parents with new babies) they're certainly trying to show off their creations. Hold them, pass them around -- or maybe even act a fool and fend off a fiercely angry Palai parent.

Finally, the Palai are getting used to the standard familiar faces, so they aren't unaware that there are quite a few new faces in the mix. Based on how familiar your character is, they'll receive a nice little gift from the Palai. Older coven members will receive a scrolled parchment that lists them as honorary citizens of Aimintas and a handmade, harden clay sculpture of their likeness. It may not look a lot like them, but they tried.

F ▢ What about new members? Well, they get the Aimintas Starter Kit: an unmarked vial containing Palai mating pheromones (makes your character affectionate, etc), a bag of cooked shrimp, a collection of their baked goods and energy drinks (containing Elto magic that makes magical abilities hard to handle), and a harmless paper flower. Your character likely isn't used to the dangers of some of these items, so maybe someone can help them...or is it too late?

G ▢ Because the Palai recognize new faces, these new coven members will be dragged to other coven members who they do recognize. In an effort to help make introductions, the Palai are trying to connect new members with old members in order to foster friendships. Say hi to a new, awkwardly introduced covenmate...?

H ▢ Wildcard! How will your character interact with this new and unusual world?

YoRHa are the blades that cut down threats to mankind.

[And he can say as much with conviction, even after learning so many cruel truths. He can make it the reality now.

    Besides—]

And my partner's here too. I don't know about all this balance in the universe business, but they're my priorities.

After a minute she cursed in frustration. "I can't see what I'm doing. You'll have to do it. Or I could just cut it off."

She still had a dagger on her belt, after all.

"Jeez, okay, okay, we don't have to cut my hair. Gimme a second."

Waver turned himself so that he was angled under and looking up at where horn and hair intersected. It was not the most comfortable angle in the world, but it offered the right view for Waver to start to gingerly tug out single strands, moving slowly but steadily.

"It isn't going to hurt you if I have to yank a little harder? I don't know how sensitive these things are...."
    demomofdownside: (Hmph)

    [personal profile] demomofdownside 2017-09-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Do not worry yourself on my account. I will be fine." She said, with a slight sniff.

[sup Jodi, here's a kid as skinny and pale as the moontouched girl, only his eyes are wide and icy grey, instead of wide and red, and his hair leans more towards ash. Lalli's got his attentioned zeroed in on -- well, not actually her, but her whole...situation going on there. This sure is a ton of little lizards having a field day. How is she putting up with this...?]

    What's indigo?

[He hasn't moved closer... Just kind of being a weird scarecrow over here. Askin' about colors.]

No further questions. Waver gave one final tug, ending the entanglement once and for all. He let out a low grunt when he was finished, and immediately began to fuss with his hair to make sure that it didn't look like it totally just got stuck in someone's horns.

    "Okay, I'm detached."

Finally. Jodariel stood and rolled her neck a bit, having been sitting with her head slightly to the side for a while now. "Thank you, but please watch where you're going in the future."

She fingered the letter in her pocket. Did the Commonwealth's law run here? Not likely, if people were just handing out written letters. It felt weird to just up and ask it though.

"...You wouldn't happen to be a reader, would you?"
    demomofdownside: (Hmm?)

    [personal profile] demomofdownside 2017-09-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
    What's-?

[She blinked at the question, then gently pushed a child's hand aside before it got into her eye.]

It's a color. Somewhere between blue and violet.

    b. face-painting

[ Although the games have been good and fun, it seems like the Palai have a good interest in the artistry of the star-shaped birthmark under Ru's eye. He's been sitting here in good humor for a while now while some of the artists take turns figuring out designs to really bring out the fun in it.

Eventually he waves someone over, face utterly still but humor shining brightly in his eyes. ]

Excuse me! Pardon. Help us out here. Do you think this fireworks design is good, or maybe the star-flower they tried earlier? Which sounds better?

[ Save him? Join him? Come up with something new? ]

    e. egg parents
[ Now isn't this just precious? Ru definitely ends up stopped with one of the egg carts and has curled one up each in the breasts of his half-zipped hoodie. The mark on his cheek is glowing dimly now, little displays of light washing over the shells of the eggs while he helps warm them, like sunshine cascading off of gentle watery waves. He's attempting to talk some of the cart-pushers but when others come around, he'll most certainly stop them with the other Palai after quickly getting the idea of the showing off. ]

Hey. Nice to meet you! Aren't these eggs gorgeous?

    g. meet 'n greet

Oh, uhm... I can—promise, everyone, I can really go and introduce myself, it's...

[ Ooph. There's a Ru in your space. He looks a little embarrassed but his joviality isn't dampened at all. Best of all, this can be used as an opportunity. ]

Guess that's that... Uh, hello, I'm Ru. Maybe you can help me out. [ He shifts, pulls out the unmarked vial from the newbie kit. ] Am I supposed to drink this, or... what is it?

    [personal profile] teratias 2017-09-08 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I thought I had more distance, but yeah, I'll try.

Waver was happy to no longer be angling his head up like an car mechanic, but that happiness soon went away when Jodariel straightened up. She....shit, she was probably taller than Rider, and that was really damn tall.

Easier to focus on her question, which was phrased pretty weirdly. It took him a moment to try and parse the meaning.

"If you mean can you read, then the answer's yes. I...how can I help?"

It was probably the best way to apologize for what just happened.
    demomofdownside: (What's this about?)

    [personal profile] demomofdownside 2017-09-08 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good. Inwardly she let out a sigh of relief. She held out the letter she had been handed not long ago. "I am curious what it says."
    teratias: (08. Study corner)

    [personal profile] teratias 2017-09-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Waver took it, skimming it first. Yep, same letter, same explanation.

"I can do that," he said. He took a moment to hold the page a little closer to his eyes, the lighting could have been better, then read the whole thing at a steady, even pace. Under other circumstances he would have blitzed through, but given the information within and knowing that whoever he was speaking with wouldn't be able to go back and re-read it, Waver did make an effort to take his time.

When he ended, he held the letter back out. "That's the end of it, unfortunately."
    mech_and_mutt: (Well um...)

    [personal profile] mech_and_mutt 2017-09-08 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah-- maybe they usually don't get people to help them. Poor li'l guys probably need all the help and friends they can get.

We'll just have to make sure they're really prepared before we head off.

[At least there was a little room for some hopefulness in there as well. The next words just seemed a tiny bit... brighter, albeit faintly.]

Then again, maybe they're just a li'l bit braver than I gave 'em credit for.
lalliho: (she had thirteen kids and a moose)

    [personal profile] lalliho 2017-09-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
[That's. Concerning. These tiny monsters were going to take her eye out. Children...are terrifying.]

...Oh. [Blue is easy, and he's seen violets before, so...somewhere between those... He can dig it, that's a color that exists.] ...Why would you want that? None of the other colors go between each other.

[Blending, maybe? Also: someone apparently doesn't know how colors work.]
    spaceforged: (Headache incoming)

    [personal profile] spaceforged 2017-09-08 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
[He sighs and leans against the left wall. It helps him get his feet under him. It had taken many falls to learn that.]

Well, four feet are surprisingly harder to move than two. Or it could be all the pounds of metal. Hard to say.

[So far so good. He's on his feet again. Shiro cautiously pads closer. But he's getting tired. It was time to swap back anyway. Between one breath and the next the robotic lion is replaced with a tall man. Exhaustion hits him like a wave and he leans against the wall again.]

Sorry. I chose back here to confirm a few things and get some control. It seemed the safest bet.

[Waver does doubletake at the transformation, only because it is his first time seeing it. The only other person Waver knows that can transform in the coven hasn't done it in front of him.]

Yeah, I don't blame you. [He wanted to do that when he was first learning his own powers too.] No one gets any instructions on their powers either.
spaceforged: (idk my bff black lion?)

    [personal profile] spaceforged 2017-09-08 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly. Best not to rule anything out yet.

[He isn't sold on this Coven idea yet. But it's work with them or hinder everyone's efforts to go home. Shiro shakes his head and moves his hand holding the drink before he checks himself. Right.]

I'll take the boring way over not knowing what I'm dealing with to get back to my team.
    spaceforged: (We'll get through this.)

    [personal profile] spaceforged 2017-09-08 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Or details about them. Everyone I've talked to said they got only what they can do. That's too dangerous.

[It's going to take a lot of practice to get himself into conbat ready speed as a lion. All the worrying implications of being able to change it aside he had definitely noticed how difficult even walking was proving to be.]

Know how long it usually takes to get the hang of the magic? Or does it vary based on the ability?
    teratias: (14. Science)

    [personal profile] teratias 2017-09-08 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Waver shakes his head no, looking a little apologetic about the response.]

It depends on the person, it depends on the magic, it depends on the ability. If your world has magic, that eases things a little, I think? But it really is just impossible to give any kind of assessment.
    alphonse: (Well golly gee.)

    [personal profile] alphonse 2017-09-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, but this isn't exactly the safest place, so you do have to be careful.

[Time for the less optimistic part of the welcoming speech already. It really can't be helped.]

I know it's hard to tell from the way the Palai are celebrating, but the city was just attacked and still needs time to recover.

[9S has never heard of a game where clouting stuffed objects resembling marine life was the objective, but then, he doesn't know that many games. With the unnatural speed and coordination an android such as himself sports, he's netted himself quite a few coins, though he's as yet undecided as to how he'll use them.

He remembers reading about bartering using such currencies in the Old World, but here the usage seems much more limited...interesting.

So he thinks before a decidedly round, fluffy little creature parks itself in front of him. He halts, squatting to get a closer look, and recording for posterity]

[ Ember's initial thought was that this was some sort of... new event. She wasn't sure how or why, but it made more sense than the alternative.

And so there's a girl just kind of standing in the middle of the festival plaza, opening up various holographic, blue-tinged windows in front of her. If you can read (English), the windows can be recognized as an inbox, a guild roster, a friends list, and similar as the girl scrolls through them. ]

Nobody's online...? Bullshit. That means.... [ Hrrrngh. ]

    [ B ]

[ Okay, face painting. Ember could get behind that.

Unfortunately, her request for a flower that blended the colors in a way to mimic a watercolor painting ended up being a bit too difficult for the artist, and instead she had a vaguely flower-shaped brownish blob on her cheek.

Do not look at her. Do not speak to her. Do not take pictures. ]

    [ F ]

[ Ember had received a... starter kit? Of some sort. But what the heck did any of them do? She didn't get a mouseover information window on them, she couldn't even toss them into her inventory to see what they did.

So she resorted to the oldest method in the book of finding out new information. Older even than wiki diving. ]
Hey, have you been here a while? Do you know what any of this stuff is?

[ this is weird. this is really, really weird. okay, the whole ‘new universe’ thing is the weirdest thing of it all, but when she separates herself from that — the weirdest thing is that this feels like a summer festival, complete with games, take-home pets. the only thing that seems to be missing are masks and fireworks. but the last thing yukari remembered from home was that it was late january, still bitter cold on the top of a tower.

well, at least she had someone familiar at her side. ]

C’mon, Junpei, I bet you get a few more.

[ junpei’s been sticking to yukari’s side like a very attached puppy waiting to go home from this strange place, certain that it’ll be left behind if he’s not in extremely close proximity. they’ve stopped in front of the whack-a-prawn, and junpei twirls the soft hammer in his hand. ]

Oh! Oh, I’ve so got this. Lemme smash!

[ iori steps up to the plate board, cuffing his sleeves up for The Drama, and the timer starts. still not used to the hammer, it starts out a little slow, then starts to pick up the pace, wham! hit. wham! hit. whump. miss. wham! hit--! in the final stretch, he goes to slap down a big shrimp baby on the opposite corner of the board...!

and overreaches, trips, and falls flat on his face. ;__; ow. looks like there’s gonna be no shrimp heaven now... maybe help him up? yukari certainly isn’t, she’s standing to the side, trying her best not to break down into giggles. a palai offers her a bag of coins — up until that point, he didn’t do... that bad? ]

    Looks like you’re still A, [ snort ] Ace Defective. [ snerk ]

[ still face first on the ground, baseball cap askew, and voice muffled, junpei takes his time picking himself up. ] ...I’m keeping the pet shrimp.

[ oh, honey, this isn’t the game where you get the pet… please save them from themselves. replies will come from both with no tagging order unless you'd like one! ]

    e;
[ she doesn’t know why she’s been given this egg. she doesn’t know why it’s relatively cool to the touch or why several of the little lizard people seem more than happy to hand off the egg to unsuspecting humans, but here yukari is, gently cradling the egg in her hands and trying her best not to drop it. usually she figures she’s pretty good with kids, but not… not when they’re. in egg form. what is this how did this happen what does she do.

the worst part of it all is that the actual parent of the egg she’s holding has gone missing.

    um.

so! this is yukari, approaching the nearest coven member, keeping a protective grasp on that tiny little child. ]
Hey —! Excuse me! D’you know anything about these guys? One of them handed this to me, and … I lost ‘em in the crowd. Can you help me find them?

[Having already unloaded some exposition on one of the new additions to this coven they've ended up a part of, 9S doesn't find himself averse to getting people up to speed. What he doesn't expect is having them herded his way, so when some (relatively) tall guy is shoved in his direction, he can only watch the curious procession in silence.

He remembers three of them teaming up to get him into a chair for that speed-date thing, and he's reminded of that now. Palai really don't take no for an answer when they think they've got good ideas do they?

Still, this man looks like a human, and what good YoRHa unit doesn't look after the interests of mankind]

    A1 - Tilted

Okay, bonk the little shrimp-puppet things, get the gold coins. Simple enough! And not too difficult, either- especially for someone who had as much practice timing hits as he had to pick up in his line of work. He could play a round or two, show 'em how it's done, and move on.

    "UWAAGHH!!"

As it turns out, that last part seemed to be a bit of a sticking point for Red when his run came out just a couple whacks short of a perfect score. Okay, sure, he'd just give it a retry! ... and still fell barely short. Then it became a pattern. Then it got personal. Sooner or later passerby might have noticed a dog-person very... emphatically pummeling plush pop-up prawns besides a rather large heap of coins, engrossed to a point where he doesn't even notice the occasional Palai sneaking tokens out of his pile...

    A2 - Payoff

After being asked very nicely to stop playing- and convincing himself that he only came up short because that third-to-last dummy hit didn't register I mean he obviously hit the darn thing- Red left the machine with enough winnings to warrant an immediate trip to the prize exchange. Well, it wasn't like coinage was an issue here; he was pretty sure he could trade in just about anything there.

He just wasn't sure what to actually spend it all on. --Well, other than the purple carp plush. That one was a no-brainer. He could just dump it all into the Life-Sized-Unusually-Large-Plush-Shrimp and practically have a sofa for his shack back at the home island... but then again maybe he could get the Model Mechanical Coelacanth and still have enough for a booster pack of Palai Protectors trading cards and some fistfuls of candy bags. --Oh, or maybe the spice rack!

It was enough to have him reach out for the nearest passerby to ask for some advice on which improvisationally-bizarre item he should actually spend the tokens on. "W-which ones should I get?! I can't decide!" (Of course, by then the plush carp was already kept hugged close to his chest.)

    F - Timeshare?

Well! It was definitely nice to feel recognized for his efforts in restoration. And hey-- a little collector's figure of himself! That's the sort of privilege usually reserved for comic book characters or celebrities!... even if it did seem a little bit, uh. Off-model. Honorary citizenship, on the other hand...

For starters, he didn't even when they'd see this world again, if they'd ever see this world again. Furthermore- as strange as it sounded- that weird floating island they were on before and were apparently going back to once all this blew over was actually closer to back home than this place. And even if the Palai did start growing on him after a while... he wasn't entirely sure he could handle it full-time.

"It's a nice place to visit, but... y'know." That, and the salt-watery air left his fur a little coarse.

Red turned his head to the other coven visitor seated on the bench beside him. "Think you'd ever wanna come back here?"
