[So you may have gotten a telepathic message a few days ago about an expedition to map the coastline . . . or maybe you were invited along by a friend. Whatever the reason, it's bright and early this morning, and it's time to set out!

Characters would have gotten a further telepathic message from Jay with a date and time to meet outside the shacks. They'll be heading east along the "shore," tracking the coast, and then heading directly back towards base camp . . . who knows what they'll find along the way?]

We can't really do much if he doesn't agree, though. [ it has the tone of a reminder, directed at john. they talked about it briefly before, even if he agrees that living in a tree is Kind Of Stupid. ] I didn't keep track of who was cookin' what; I didn't eat any of it.

[ he just saw the after-effects and went "well that was a good decision made mostly out of not bothering". ]

There's gotta be a better way to test out what's edible than just havin' someone get sick when it ain't, though.

[He rolls his eyes. FINE he'll stop worrying about Jake in a tree. Damn Striders.]

If she can adapt then that probably means we can, too, which is a good sign. But yeah, I'll pass on the food poisoning next time. [But instead of fusing like he should, he's suddenly holding a reed out to both of them.] Check these out. They're pretty durable.

[Dirk's eyes flicker to John.]

You've talked to him about it?

[He takes a reed offered. And wobbles it.

This amuses him, because he's an idiot.]

[ dave uncrosses his arms and holds his hand out automatically when john goes to hand him something.

he then proceeds to say nothing as he tries to bend it, because the conversation has officially moved into "nothing further to say about this, welp" territory. ]

[He's monitoring both of them to see how the reeds bend, but also:]

Yes. I talked to him about a couple of things when we first met. [There's a look in Dirk's direction at that.] The tree thing just stuck out the most, but I guess it makes sense. [On the other hand, by proxy of knowing him so well, Dave may be able to pick up on the tiniest of inflections in John's tone to indicate that whatever he and Jake spoke about gave him a lot to think on.] See how far you can bend them. That'll give us an idea of what we can use them for.

[Dirk catches the look and feels a jolt of shame that he hides. Instead, saying nothing, he just grasps the edge of the reed and bends it until he feels the strain start to push back.]

This is it. I'd recommend weaving them or putting them into curved structures. Mats and baskets.

You know you can bend it further than both of us, probably.

[ huge hammers > swords in terms of strength. but dave obligingly bends the reed as far as he can. he makes absolutely no indication of having caught the inflection to john's tone, although he files it away to think about at a later date. ]

[Sorry everyone, this happens when John has a lot on his mind. Still, he watches the reeds bend and he nods in agreement to both parts.]

Baskets would be a good idea to carry stuff to and from exploration sites at least, especially if we are going to other planets. Reeds should be sort of waterproof too if woven together, but I don't know anything about weaving? It could be worth try to fuse them but I have never tried fusing two of the same object before. We could bring some back to the main camp and test them out.

You need to do your experiment with living things, for the sake of your giant frog pet.

[Since that was the point. Dirk bends the reed just that fragment more and it begins to splinter and fray and then snap.

Then he starts trying to destroy its brokenness. It would be easier to destroy it entirely.]

Don't ask me about weavin'. But it can't be too hard...Rose might know a little bit, or we can probably figure it out if we have enough time and the impetus to do so.

[ dave flicks the reed he's holding back at john. ]

This would be the point in time where Kanaya would come super in handy. Anyway, you asked what we found earlier...I haven't found a whole hell of a lot, though Minato and I sailed off the edge of the water. I don't recommend it.

[ why did you do it, then. ]

I know, I know. [This is to Dirk, but now he's watching him fiddle with his powers. He remembers their discussion, too, and wonders how he's faring with the idea of destruction.] And I will experiment with the reeds! And whatever other plants we find? But if it doesn't work then we know it won't work on the frogs.

[He takes the reed from Dave though, twirling it in his fingers.] We can take a few to Rose, too. But uh. Why did you sail off the edge? Did you not learn anything from the last time Minato talked one of us over the edge?

[The second Dave says it Dirk freezes and looks up. He has no other answer, just that blank quiet terror at the thought of something happening to Dave.]

[ ... ]

Apparently Rose and I are very susceptible to his charms? [ GOD. HE DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THE FACT THAT MINATO HAD ALREADY CAJOLED ROSE INTO JUMPING. dave reaches up to shove his shades on more firmly, before running his hand through his hair. ] Uh. Do not let him talk you into goin' over the side, we should attempt to block him from the full set. Lord.

Also we sailed over to see what would happen, mostly. It involved hangin' off the side of infinity in a boat, and also a weird wall of water. I am not sure physics really work right here. I got wet.

[He catches Dirk's reaction, but also he almost-playfully bops Dave on the head with the reed? What the fuck, man.] I cannot believe you let him talk you into going over the edge after what happened with Rose.

[It's stupid, but kind of funny? On the other hand he blinks in surprise because that doesn't seem like a thing that should happen in space.] Are you talking about a waterfall? I don't really know physics either when it comes to space and gravitational water walls.

[Dirk opens his mouth like he is going to say or ask anything, and then he closes it. The ease that sets into his body language after is forced, but probably only detectable to Dave, unless John has gotten good at microexpressions.]

That honestly sounds kinda cool. Like a relatively interestin' place to swim.

Hey! [ offended cat glare given towards john. how dare you, john. ] Also, look, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Worst that was gonna happen was we got slingshotted back into a whole lot of wet, so.

[ ... ] I can't defend my thought process otherwise, but I would not say it was a cool place to swim. It looked...interestin', but I do not think makin' a habit of hanging out at the end of the known ocean slice is a great idea. Speakin' of Rose we should bring her somethin' back. Not a frog, she'll murder us if we try that.

[Heheheh. Still, maybe don't do stupid shit without him next time.]

It would be a little cool? Almost like an infinity pool but I still wonder how it's possible to sustain an ocean too. Also why is it so far from the beach where we are? [A slight shake of the head.] We can grab something for Rose later, dude, but I might bring back a frog or two with the reeds. But seriously, how?

Why would it be a bad idea? Rough waters aren't a problem for me.

[Falling out the side of space is probably a problem but Dave said they bounce back? So that's fine.]

Were there any fish?

Because we have no idea if the gravitational field on the island ever goes...off.

We didn't manage to catch any fish. Also, two frogs max, dude. You are a terrible father and I will not be responsible for more than two amphibians? Especially since I doubt Rose will super help.

I feel like maybe that is a thing to consider before sailing off of the edge and hoping for the best, but okay. Maybe if there are fish they would be edible. It's worth a look. Also I am a perfectly fine father, take that back! Rose loves me and would understand.

[And then a pointed look to Dirk.] I don't think any of us should go over the edge again.

[YEAH. DAVE??? WHY DID YOU SAIL OVER THE SIDE.]

I am not getting scolded twice over by people who are apparently perfectly willing to go over the edge themselves. That is all kinds of unfair on the risk-takin' front.

[Dirk admired him, like he admired all their ancestors. They had been heroes, each one, in their own way.]

[ dave flips them both off? before slanting a look at john and actually actively smiling in amusement. it's not huge, because he doesn't really do huge smiles, but it's visible enough to count as one for him. ]

I will not take it back because you forget: I was Rose's fuckin' server player. We did actually see you steal her cat and abandon a salamander you picked up in its place? You, dude, are a terrible father. I can't argue the Rose loves you and would understand part, though. The main point here is that I suspect we will end up helpin' to care for your adoptees so keep 'em to a reasonable level.

[What if he just starts keeping track of the number of times Dave's actually smiled since they got here? What if. He doesn't find it to be a brand new novelty like he did the first time but he does like what it means even if it's at the expense of himself.]

[Dirk flips off at Dave right back, then startles at the smile, making himself pull back from his surprise (startled, strangely happy and sad at once) to focus elsewhere.]

[Why is he suggesting other things for John to adopt.]

[ it's a flicker. the smile's gone by the time he speaks up again. ]

No. [ to john, re: the possibility of boars. ] Also, don't lie, you are absolutely gonna pick up and adopt stuff from every planet. I know you, Egbert, that is a thing you will entirely do. R - she ain't here.
