i. before the battle

[Everyone who was a part of the ground team last time the Uvi attacked will be getting the following message:]

Anyone who is willing to fight should head to one of the following locations. We don't have a lot of time.

[There's a mental image of a few different places in succession: mostly residential and business neighborhoods that have had barrier shields set up around dwellings and entryways. Jay can be found in front of one particularly large home, pacing rapidly back and forth with his dagger out. He'll wave a hand to greet anyone familiar, but it's clear his mind is on something else.]

ii. in the fray

[He's on his feet facing down three Uvi, dagger whirling, slashing-dodging-kicking in mad succession as he tries to fend them off without falling prey to one of their blades. He drops to the ground as one of them swings its spear, only to . . . grab for its tail?

Why soon becomes clear, as the Uvi shudders as though it's been shocked and lets its weapon clatter to the ground. It looks as though a blanket of calm has been settled over it, its eyes half-lidded, its hands at its sides, seemingly without any continued interest in attacking.

The same, however, cannot be said for the other two . . . . ]

Jay! Behind you!

[Lenka still doesn't have the hang of telepathic communication -- his first instinct will always be to call out verbally, even if that alerts the Uvi to his presence once he comes charging in, knife flashing. It's less to warn Jay of impending attack and more to at least give him a heads-up... literally.

One of the Uvi trying to take advantage of his concentration on his spell is immediately and summarily crushed under a fridge that just spontaneously appeared not far above its head; it may crash down a bit too close to Jay for comfort, but at least there was warning. Sort of. There are also sparks and a sudden deluge of ramen packets once all is said and done.

Lenka, now that he's managed to fire off a bit of magic, is locked in a struggle with the other Uvi -- his knife's range is a bit too short to contend with its spear, so he's doing his best to dance around it, slipping under its guard here and there to try and damage its hide. It's really thick hide, though.]

Ah--

[He rolls himself quickly out of the way of the fridge--no time to think about ramen packets now, not with the continuing threat. He hesitates for a moment, but--they are still in the middle of a fight--gets up and slashes his dagger across the exposed throat of the other Uvi while it's still calm.

Now for the last one.

Jay's dagger doesn't have much more range than a knife, and ranged attacks are risky with Lenka at close quarters. But--he sends out a telepathic message:]

Just distract it. I'll take care of it.

... Okay.

[He's never fought alongside Jay before, but he seems to know what he's doing; and he seems able to affect the Uvi in some way, though Lenka had had no time nor attention to spare to figure out what was going on with the one he had by the tail. He'll trust him on this one.

Distracting an Uvi, though, is easier said than done -- Lenka's learned to recognize when they're working their particular brand of magic (who was it who'd said, so complacently a little while ago, that the Uvi hadn't used magic in their last attack?!), so he can at least do his best to cut it off before it starts summoning a rain of sharks or something. Fending off its attacks with the knife is kind of numbing on the arms, too, and he's off-balance more than once, stepping back with a crunch or two.

Then he pauses.

It's a split second of thought, and then Lenka shrugs to himself, crouches and picks up one of the ramen packets beneath his feet and tears it open with his teeth -- a moment later there's just flying crushed ramen everywhere as he keeps repeating the movement. Hey, free smoke screen (noodle screen?). You use what you have.

At least the Uvi seems sufficiently confounded, even if it's not enough to get it to let up on its attack for very long.]

[I mean. Whatever works????

In any case, the Uvi being . . . understandably flummoxed by the noodle screen gives Jay just enough time to sneak behind it and enact his own extremely dignified mode of attack. That's right; Operation FLYING TACKLEHUG is a go.

He's thinking as hard as he can of calm things--warm baths and nights by the fire--which is not an easy task when you're grabbing a six foot tall angry fishperson by the neck. The Uvi bucks at first, trying to throw Jay off, but he clings ferociously, and eventually, its stance slackens, arms dropping to its sides, battle seemingly forgotten.

Jay is still holding onto it, though. Just in case. This isn't awkward.]

[Whatever works, man, including forcibly prying piggyback rides from your enemies in the middle of town while slightly soggy broken noodles are everywhere (there's definitely some on Jay now, but at least the seasoning hasn't gotten involved in this particular broth from hell).

Lenka blinks when the Uvi stops trying to spear him, and then when it seemingly abandons the fight altogether -- he glances at Jay, but he seems really focused on hugging the Uvi and doing whatever he's doing, which Lenka is going to assume is some kind of magical... whatever. Something involving contact; it rings a few bells, but now's not the time to play connect the dots. He doesn't know how long this is going to last.

Unfortunately, actually stabbing the Uvi, even with a kitchen knife, is a little difficult with Jay plastered to it: a wrong move or choosing the wrong spot and there would be a little too much blade added to that embrace.

So what Lenka goes for is the legs -- more specifically the knees, where hopefully the hide is a little more vulnerable -- slashing at them with all his might.]

[That motion causes the Uvi to stagger back, stumbling, blood oozing out of the cuts on its knees. It hisses and bares its teeth at Lenka--but Jay clamps it more tightly around the neck, expression fierce with concentration, and it subsides.

They stand there in the middle of the street like that for a long moment, and then Jay slowly climbs down from the now-still Uvi, which is swaying back and forth on its feet, its expression slack, clean of the usual murderous rage. He takes out his dagger.]

Do you think there's any point in capturing it?
probablynoteren: (smth's rotten in the state of crapsack)

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-16 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[He'd hoped to incapacitate it more and reduce its range of motion -- but Uvi hide is something else, almost as tough as the carapaces and armored hides on some of the larger-type Aragami he's fought before. Lenka has backed up a little to get out of range of the Uvi spear and regroup just in case Jay's magic(?) doesn't work.

He circles back a little closer now that things seem to have gotten under control again, staring with curious wariness at the enemy that seems to have somehow been sent into a trance or been given some shot of magical tranquilizer.]

That's your magic, isn't it? [Lenka still has his knife up, but he hesitates at Jay's question -- so far, he's done his best to knock out and immobilize rather than kill, uncertain of outright slaughtering something that isn't quite beast or monster] How long does it last? If we can tie it up, maybe we can get some information.

[Apart from his own misgivings, there's still very little they know about the Uvi: they might as well give it a shot while they have a lull.]

[He nods, and rests a hand on the Uvi's back to maintain the flow of calm.]

I can do it continuously as long as we're touching, although increased contact helps. Do we have rope?

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-09-17 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
No. But we should be able to find some here.

[The buildings around here haven't seen as much damage as some other parts of the city, and there's still the occasionally small booth from a street vendor or spread out in front of a shop, used for hawking its goods when the going is good. Everything is deserted now, of course, save for prowling Uvi and coven members. And the occasional wayward fish...

He backs up a little, sweeping the area for likely places to find what they need.]

Can you move them? [a brief nod indicates the Uvi, still placid under Jay's palm] It won't be far.

I don't think my power extends that far.

[He looks around them, watching for more Uvi.]

I'm simply laying over a suggestion of calm, not telling it what to do. But it should stay like this for now.
