[Copper, lizards, and vines - oh my! With the recent installation of 9S and co.'s scanning equipment and the also recent, significantly wetter rainstorms there's quite a lot to check out on the island right now. ~~Plus, the monitor robot still needs a name. You're not going to leave them nameless forever, are you?~~

Too bad Genette's put out word that everyone's about to be moving location soon. That means these are the last days the coven has for a little while to get everything in order, whether it's to take things to the next destination or to leave them behind. Get your bags packed and your huts cleaned, everyone!]

It's not really the power. It just, um, it's easier to hang out in it in this shape. People ask a lot more questions when they see a human-shaped somebody sitting in the shallows for hours, since humans don't usually do that.

[Geir probably CAN read him a little better in this shape than most other people in the coven, able to recognize how he's displaying stress or emotion without being able to really express most of them through his face...he doesn't seem too strained, but definitely a bit tired.]

Oh, that's true. I saw a girl go underwater and got worried a little while ago, but she was fine. I guess she didn't need to breathe.

[Geir tilts his head thoughtfully and repositions his tail very slightly so Mikleo can stretch out with a bit more comfort. he doesn't dunk his nose below the water, of course.]

Did and your summ-- your pact-maker, make it through all that rain okay?

Oh...

[that's a mildly loaded monosyllable, though loaded with what is harder to determine]

...we were all right. We used it to do some reading up at the mansion, mostly. Less chance of him catching a cold up there, and it meant we could greet some of the new people who came in.

There are more of those every month or so, huh...

[Geir thinks about the rate at which Qri is pulling people in, the timing of it, where she's getting the power to do what she's doing... but that's not in fact what he's most interested in asking about right now. it's likely that the most Mikleo could answer about Qri is "I'd noticed that and found it weird too," since that's all any of them appear to have on her yet. questions about Mikleo and Sorey, on the other hand...]

--does he get colds a lot? Sorey.

Just about. Maybe she has that magic going to pull them in regularly, even if she's not awake, and that's why they keep coming in at awkward times...

[sighs, blowing bubbles in the water]

Sorey's pretty healthy -- he wouldn't get a cold easily -- but he has a tendency to push himself, and he's human. I always worried about him when we were little and he got sick then.

That makes sense. I've never had a human before. They seem delicate.

[Geir narrows his eyes, brooding on that thought for a moment. some of Mikleo's problems seem similar to his. he might as well pick his brain.]

How do you tell when they're pushing themselves too much?

[hesitates, not because he minds answering, but because he has to think about it. he thinks of Rose and Alisha more than Sorey, actually. he doesn't think Geir's had the advantage of growing up with his summoner, the way he talks.]

...you know. They look tired, they feel tired, they start flagging or you can see them pushing themselves, they start acting a little different even if they try to hide it. The longer you know someone the easier it is to tell. Humans can be surprisingly strong in a lot of circumstances too, though.

How long have you been with Vern...?

...not very long. Only a few months, really.

[he hesitates too, not sure how much -- or how -- to describe the uncertainty he feels around Vern sometimes.]

I don't know much about humans, so I want to understand him better.

I knew exactly one human until a few months ago.

[he bubbles out a longer sigh, inching his chin more onto Geir's tail]

Has it helped that we're in a group with a lot of them now?

[it's not an uncomfortable headrest! Geir snorts ruefully and flops his head to the side, half-underwater for a moment.]

Nooooot so much. Most of them make even less sense than Vern.

[he contemplates trying to explain that his problems are probably as much due to not interacting with many people who aren't gods in general as much as humans specifically, and decides not to get into it for just now. he's abruptly a bit too tired to try to explain yet again the dynamics that always seemed so natural to him, and now seem so completely alien to everyone he talks to...]

Does it help for you?

If I don't get too sidetracked by going over how different they are from me in culture and in knowledge...yes, sometimes. People and their situations are generally complicated, they can always surprise you, but the longer you spend with individuals and the more you trust each other...

I guess that doesn't happen all at once, though.

Was only knowing one human weird? Growing up, I mean.

[Mikleo's life sounds like it was very different than Geir's, growing up. he supposes that that's the case for most of the people he knows, even gods. interesting...]

Yes. I think I had it easiest, actually, since I was growing up with him. But humans have very different needs from seraphs...we don't have to eat or sleep, and we...more or less stop growing when we want to. Everyone kind of had to adjust. He knew he was different from us too, of course, but I think everyone sort of adjusted so he felt like he belonged anyway.

[Mikleo sounds wistful. that was comparatively a much simpler time in their lives.]

[he's not sure what he wants to say there. gentle? kind? a kind childhood isn't something he's really considered before.]

He certainly needed taking care of.

[hmmmmpf. it's obvious to anyone his huffiness is mostly feigned though]

Mmmmmm. I bet it would be.

[that's another thing that Geir wanted to ask about, honestly, and this doesn't seem like a bad place for it.]

...does he still need taking care of? The last time I talked to you guys was after that weird nightmare. It seemed pretty bad. Are you... I don't know... okay?

[he fidgets in the water a bit; he's not sure of the etiquette here.]

I don't want to ask if it's gonna make you mad.

[he sounds a bit surprised; not angry]

...it's fine. Thank you for--what you did back there. It helped when we talked, I think. We figured out something we could do about it, so it's been a bit better since then.

[Geir seems more abashed than anything, worrying a little at the edge of the pool with his claws and not quite meeting Mikleo's eye.]

I don't know if I did anything that great. Mostly, I yelled at him. But if you guys need help with anything, I wouldn't mind. It looked like you were dreaming about a lot of weird confusing stuff.

We went through some weird confusing stuff...a couple of months before we got here. I guess it took me a while to process some of it...? I'm sorry that -- that dream of mine was so aggressive.

[with a touch of curiosity:]

You weren't very. You just snarled and snapped a little, and wanted someone to help you calm down.

[wriggles a little, in embarrassment]

If Sorey hadn't been there, I would have attacked you. I'm pretty sure.

[this is such a strange point to get hung up on, from Geir's point of view.]

I mean... I was on your ground, and you were scared and angry and all chained up. I wouldn't have been surprised if you attacked me.

It's still...I normally wouldn't want to...?

I didn't think you did, but...!

[Geir tilts his head, trying to puzzle out what's embarrassing Mikleo here.]

...is it really strange for you to get riled up like that...?

It's not just getting angry. I mean -- I suppose it wouldn't be the same in a dream, I was still kind of aware of you somewhere -- but where I'm from, a dragon doesn't have the ability to really think or reason anymore, the way you or I do...
