[HUB ISLAND | MANSION CLEANING]
Who: Coven members
Where: The Hub Island (the mansion, beach huts, etc)
When: Day 83
Open/Closed: Open to All
Where: The Hub Island (the mansion, beach huts, etc)
When: Day 83
Open/Closed: Open to All
Not much has changed about the Hub Island since the first coven members ended up here, but there is an obvious unkemptness that's crept over the existing structures. Rains and winds have come and gone, flora and fauna have taken over some of the mansion and a few windows are broken. In short, despite activity levels being low, a lot needs to be done. First on the agenda is getting the mansion in working order -- there's also an incentive from Brie who doesn't want to do literally everything on her own. Helping with this task AND unloading the caravan means you get a boar roasted in your honor. Well, everyone gets one single boar roasted in their honor, but that's better than starving, right?

But what about somebody like Jude? A human he'd met not so long ago, has spent time talking and helping and occasionally being at odds with. Someone with a kind smile and warm hands and confusing behavior he hasn't learned how to read. How important is all of that?
Androids were created to love and serve the race that gave them life. It goes without saying that he and 2B would be prepared to die for them, but that doesn't speak to something personal and individual, does it?]
You're the human I think of first. When it's dangerous, or when I'm wondering what people are doing, or just when I'm scouting terrain and my thoughts sort of drift, because I'm a Scanner and they do.
[He cares about the others, of course he does. He's friends with so many more than he expected he ever could be, and he understands them all differently. Appreciates them. Some of them are soldiers like him, some of them can relate to him in ways he never anticipated. But none, he thinks, have spent so much time with him as Jude, nor tried so stubbornly to understand him. To simply be close. He knows that's just how he is, with everyone, and that's fine.
But it still means a lot to him]
Something like how much... [He looks out at the water then, not quite sure] How would you define that?
no subject
[ jude knows that that answer must have taken some puzzling for 9s to figure out, and he appreciates the clear thought and the effort that went into it.
he has to mull over his own response.
jude squeezes 9s' hand. he hopes it's the reassuring gesture it's meant to be. ]
It was a selfish question, but it was something I was curious about, and you gave me an answer. That's all I need.
[ jude gives him a kind, patient smile. even moreso than usual. ]
no subject
I doubt you could be selfish if you tried.
[Truly, it's not as though he asked him for anything but his own thoughts. He wishes he had a more cohesive answer for him than something like that, but he's never evaluated how important Jude is on some scale, only acknowledged that he is important. That he matters.
All of the humans around him do, but the ones he's gotten to know have their own unique, personal value to him. And that, without question, includes the boy next to him]
But...why something like that?
[Surely Jude doesn't doubt that he matters to others. Kind as he is, he's got to have a lot of friends around here]
no subject
[ jude looks down at his feet in the sand. aren't these feelings he has for 9s, whatever they are, selfish? weren't the feelings he had for milla selfish? the feelings he had when milla died, when he thought she just left him? when he treated leia so cruelly?
jude is not perfect. not by any means. ]
Because I wanted to know if... if I'm anywhere near as important to you as you've become to me.
[ he draws circles in the sand with his toes. ]
M-Maybe we should change the subject... I didn't mean to make things weird, or— or— I don't know.
[ jude is rather flushed again. ]
no subject
[Him? This YoRHa unit right here?
There's no masking his surprise, not that 9S has the presence of mind to do so. He knows, of course, that Jude's a kind person and that he cares about people. And yet he's still startled by the thought, even a little honored by it.
Because he's an android and that awareness of the difference in their status is still a part of him, although he knows Jude doesn't agree with that notion]
I...you're not weird. [Not ever, so far as he's concerned] But what would you rather talk about?
[If Jude prefers to talk about something else, he shouldn't belabor the subject though]
no subject
jude seems a little baffled as to why 9s doesn't think what he's rambling about is weird. ]
Of course you're important to me. Did I really need to say it?
[ a wry smile. ]
I'm... not sure. I just thought I might have ended up making you uncomfortable, and that's the last thing I want to do.
no subject
And that was enough. He's grateful for that much. So being valued, or rather, being considered important is simply not something he would assume for himself.
Even so...]
It was nice to hear it, anyway.
[His own smile is lopsided, accepting the real possibility that as much will seem odd from a human perspective. For his own reasons, he's glad to have been told that by someone he spends time with]
Can't say I'd know why that'd make somebody uncomfortable though.
[Isn't it a positive thing?]
no subject
but he can certainly live with it. at the very least, relief is settling in, all but seeping into his tired bones. here he is, holding 9s' hand and telling him that he's important to him, and 9s is happy?
jude will take it. this could have gone worse. and for now, this is absolutely enough. ]
Never mind that. Thanks, 9S. I'm glad I told you, in that case.
[ he does something he's done before; playfully bumps their shoulders together. ]
And I'll tell you as many times as you need to hear it.
no subject
Being close to people, being cared about, and caring about them in turn... That wasn't so easy back home, but he has to remember that humans aren't constrained in the same way as YoRHa units. Maybe that's why it comes easier.
Or maybe, it's something else altogether]
Then, if you need a reminder, I'll tell you too.
[Because in his own way, Jude seemed just as surprised as he was. It's something he'll ponder the origins of later, but for now the matter seems settled enough]
So what's your hometown like, compared to that Fennmont place?
no subject
[ one more smile, and then jude pulls 9s' coat closer with his free hand and thinks about how to describe a picture of home. it occurs to him that 2b and 9s don't have a hometown. this is one of those times jude is eerily aware of the differences between them. he can't imagine just... not growing up. not having those formative experiences. ]
Leronde is much smaller than Fennmont. It's a seaside town, just a fraction of the size. My parents run a clinic, and Leia's family runs the only inn. It's one of those places where everyone knows everyone else.
[ his smile widens, like he's just gotten an idea. ]
Leia's dad makes the best chicken. We had it every year for our birthdays. When we get out of here, I'll take you, and we'll eat some, too. After that, I'll give you a whole tour.
[ don't tell him this is impossible. he's not stupid, he knows it's impossible. just let him dream anyway. ]
no subject
9S imagines that suggestion is much like him proposing that he and 2B go t-shirt shopping. At the time, they thought it was a realistic possibility, of course, but it was surely as out of reach as visiting someone else's world. And yet, in the end, he and 2B did get to buy t-shirts, didn't they? Just not in the way they had envisioned.
So maybe it's not as impossible as it seems right now. That's the way 9S chooses to see that suggestion. It'd be nice if someday he really could see the place where Jude grew up, because it's clearly an important part of who he is]
Okay, I'd like that. [He doesn't know all that much about poultry, but that meal must be pretty special if it's reserved for a particular occasion. Although that leaves him wondering something] Is that a human thing, chicken on birthdays?
[He's not exactly familiar with the concept...]
no subject
Not really. More like just a Jude and Leia thing. Almost everyone has their own birthday traditions, I think.
... You haven't ever celebrated a birthday, have you?
[ jude is expecting a no, but he just wants to be sure. ]
no subject
Can't say I have. Androids get rolled out and deployed, so it's...a bit different.
[But he's glad that Jude has a tradition like that, especially since he speaks of it so fondly. It surely means a lot to him]
Not that I mind or anything.
no subject
[ a simple question. ]
no subject
[Imagine remembering your very first moment of life, Jude]
no subject
no subject
But I...wasn't born, though.
no subject
[ jude is feeling rather stubborn about this. ]
no subject
[He can't come up with a reason why he should have one]
no subject
no subject
[That suggestion's warmed him up to the idea]
Although I don't know her activation day...
no subject
[ jude brightens now that 9s is considering it. ]
But a birthday's all about having a day dedicated to being surrounded by friends and family.
[ his birthdays, before school, were always celebrated with leia and her family. his dad has always been a cold presence in his life, and his mother ever distracted, although she did try. ]
no subject
[And would be indicative of some serious tampering with memory. No matter what he was made to forget, he did know when he was first activated. He recalled what it was like when he worked alone, and how it felt.
So each time he met 2B, he was always grateful not to be alone anymore]
When's yours then?
[Naturally, he's got to ask]
just made this up on the spot
So we're exactly six months apart.
no subject
[Not that he'd forget anyway]
I think that suits you, that time of year.
