[Joshua is just as on edge as Carla is. His own eyes have begun adjusting, but he can't exactly see far so he follows her closely, never getting more than a meter away from her. He doesn't follow her for food reasons, but because he didn't feel safe around there. He doesn't appreciate the comfort of the herd. Why be a part of the flock at the whims of their Shepherds, when you could instead forge your own path? That's why he volunteered to accompany her.
