i. part time jobbing
[Mika's used to doing part-time jobs of almost every kind at this point of his life, which is both a feat and also slightly concerning since a boy his age shouldn't have to worry about money that badly, and... it's helping out with his own nerves and loneliness to have some semblance of normalcy by doing a number of them.

Even ones where he has to serve people, like cashier and the like, though he's high-strung and overthinks and makes mistakes, often scolded by the boss for knocking over displays (sorry) and breaking dishes in waitstaff (sorry!!!).

Special mention, of course, goes to the holiday mascoting he's actually quite gleefully doing, because no one can see his face and that's perfect thank you very much. This is just a general work prompt though, catch him being scolded, knocking over things, spilling food on you... or be caught for holiday cheer.]

ii. idol practice
[Shehui's a packed place, but every now and then Mika's able to find someplace that's relatively clear of people and has an open enough space to practice in... because just because he's not in Yumenosaki anymore doesn't mean he can slack any, even if it feels lonely to be singing and dancing alone. He can pretend it's just self-improvement! Not that he's without his usual partner! Yeah.

The sorts of dance moves he has going on are far more elegant than one'd expect if they'd talked to the nervous wreck of a boy, face the picture of grace as he moves with ballet-like motions, as if following commands from hanging strings. Sweeping, flourished arm gestures included. As elegant as they are, though, there's clear purpose and power; Valkyrie wasn't top of the school for no reason, and a combination of this style and the songs they sung were often a powerful image.

Speaking of singing, it's difficult for him to sing these songs by himself since they're really not for just one person, but he's trying both him and Shu's for practice's sake. There's two in particular (this one and that one for those interested, he's the warmer voice) he's focused on since they're the ones he has bigger parts in, and... he has not a single inkling of the Kansai accent that riddles his conversations when he talks.]

[The loud cry of distress from a boy who's just realized, without a doubt, he has grabbed the wrong scarf. He's made two since he got here to fend off his own demons, one that wiggles and one that does not, but... well, he's mistakenly grabbed the wiggling red one. It's just a simple thing that'll hold for the rest of the winter most likely, but he's gripping onto it and looks kind of odd doing so, because it's a scarf? You don't hold your scarf.

Your scarf also does not usually wiggle in greeting at people, which gives Mika panic as he decides shoving it under his jacket is a valid course of action, resulting in... a wiggling bundle under his jacket, good job. He's getting a lot of looks and he's cold and that is a piece of the scarf waving hello at you from beneath the jacket's hem, hello.]

Y-Yes. And dancing. Actually, we're an idol group...we're missing a few members, though. [ Riko pauses at that, looking away for a moment. ] May I ask you a question? This...this is a duet song, right?

[Briefly, he wonders if she knows that sunny girl. She's an idol too..! He's definitely relaxing a little more now, beaming brightly at the compliment and fiddling with the hem of his shirt.]

Thank ya! And, um, yeah, it is... but my partner ain't here. I don't know if Oshi-san'd be up for practicin' anyway, he's been kinda sick lately...

[Which he is Very Worried about but mostly at night when he has nothing to do but stare at the ceiling and miss home.]

[ It's just...it felt like he was hesitating while singing some parts. Or maybe she's just overthinking it!! But her deduction was on point in the end. ]

But I'm sorry to bring it up like that. It must be pretty tough for you...

But it's a good thing that you're practicing anyway. You can connect with Oshi-san that way. [ She's...said something embarrassing. Not for the first time, not for the last. ] I think?

[She's definitely right!! He's kind of impressed she could tell, but with her being an idol too it makes sense. Mika glances at her and then away again, wiping sweat off his face with the collar of his shirt.]

Nn, it's okay~. And that's how it feels to me too. He created these songs for Valkyrie, so it's almost like he's here with me, even if he isn't.

[Of course, it is really lonesome without him, being with two people as roommates he doesn't really know and living in a new world with such different rules and norms it's baffling, but... singing helps, it does.]

I wanna make sure... that if he does turn up here someday, that I can sing for him proudly. I ain't gonna be as good as I was before, 'cause he helps tune me and makes sure my steps are right, but I won't be rusted~. So he won't have to do much to fix me up!

[... Part of him doesn't want Shu to be here because of his health, but Mika's a selfish person and misses him terribly even now.]

Well, hopefully! I guess practicin' with others will help, even if they don't know the songs. Chika-chan suggested it~.

That's... [ Riko can't help but smile. He's so sincere and earnest, he doesn't deserve to be left alone here in this weird world?! ] I probably shouldn't be speaking for someone else, but I'm sure that Oshi-san would be proud if he heard this.

[ She was watching Mika from afar, but still, Riko's not really sure what there is to fix??? His performance was splendid. ]

Chika-chan did? [ Why is she even surprised. ] I mean. Of course she did. I think it's a great idea too, actually. If...if you don't mind, of course.

[Riko, there are always things to fix when your partner is a perfectionist. And... Shu might be proud, but mostly it's just a matter of "at least you were doing something smart with that empty head of yours" tough love.]

Nn? So ya do know each other? I was hopin' ya would, seein' as yer both idols like me~. I don't mind at all!

[my god he is gaining idol friends and they are girls. this is such a change from yumenosaki, which is not starting their coed idol courses until like, next year.]

[ Chuckling softly, Riko realizes that she's hasn't introduced herself yet, just a little before Mika asks for her name. ]

Mika-san it is. [ She's barely holding back from telling him how cute his name is. ] I'm Sakurauchi Riko, but just Riko will be fine. Sorry for interrupting your practice again...would you mind if I stayed for a little while longer and watched you?

Um... if y'wanna, then I guess so.

[Valkyrie's performances aren't to be seen by others until they're perfect, but it's just practice... and Mika is always nervous performing for others, shy at being stared at, but he breathes in softly, breathes out just the same, and smiles.]

If ya start gettin' a feel for it, go ahead and jump on in too~. I don't get to practice with other people that often, but it's always fun!

Is that really alright...? I mean this song...it's a duet song.

[ Stating the obvious here, but what she means is that it's a Mika/Shu duet. It would be rude to barge in like that. ]

I think it'll be better if I just watch. But...

[ Suddenly, Riko becomes silent and watches Mika carefully without blinking even once. ]

Let's practice sometime together, okay? With Chika-chan and the others. Maybe we could even perform together...

[Riko's so thoughtful..! High points, high points. Mika hesitates a moment, then nods.]

Practicin' for sure~. But, um, I'll think about the performin' part... I ain't that used to doin' it with others and without Oshi-san still, but I've got some experience.

I-It's fine! If you'd rather not, I'd understand. It's pretty tough to stand on stage alone...

[ Some people do it, of course, but Riko can't imagine herself performing like that. ]
