( Hello, beloved and invited guest! Actually, you likely aren’t beloved and maybe aren’t even directly invited. Anyway! Welcome to the birthday party of the age: Lalli Saku Hotakainen who maybe possibly turned 20 sometime...now...soon? Yeah.

His birthday party reflects how unsure the party planner is of the recipient’s actual birthdate. Some parts of the party have obviously been thought out — for instance, there are three birthday cakes (1, 2, 3) and several gifts already present when you arrive. The chairs and decorations, however, are somewhat mismatched and novice in presentation. You might have enough seats for yourself and your guest, and you may or may not get tangled in some haphazard streamers that are lackadaisically slung in trees. It’s a toss up. At least there are ample plates and about five meat and vegetable snack trays.

It’s a very obviously non-traditional festivity. Also there’s a big lizard there. Have fun. )

It takes a lot of practice, especially when it comes to decorating, but I believe that everyone can do it as long as they keep practicing. Well, maybe almost everyone.

[ It's difficult not to notice how Lalli's looking at the cookies; it's more than enough to make his lips quirk up. ]

Well, mine include cooking, sewing, and cleaning.

[ Read that as he doesn't know what hobbies are either. ]

You're not wrong. He asked me to come, so I agreed. I would never come empty-handed, though, no matter whether I'm a stranger to you or not.

[That all sounds like useful stuff... Do they really count as hobbies...? Given his social failings, Lalli is stuck with these thoughts circling around.]

Captain Hibiki Kohaku. [ Ah, the habit of telling people his rank got ahead of him again. ] Just...Just Hibiki will be perfectly fine.

[He looks him up and down... Well, more forward and down, since dang, they're like the same height. What a time to be alive.]

[Captain is sort of impressive... Well, he supposes it depends on what it's captain of, but. Eh.]

Besides, I attended a military academy, so it's only natural that I am a captain.

[ He's so bad at explaining. ]

[wh...aaaaat... Lalli's face scrunches up in a way that conveys hes utterly confounded by this explanation.]

I...didn't have one...? I'm not academic? [He said military academy, though...] Your military makes you do school stuff?

[ Now he can't ask Lalli about his GPA!!! Damn. This conversation is ruined. He needs something else, but in the meantime— ]

Yes, but...what have you done for so many years, in that case?

[ So many...such a nice thing to say on someone's birthday, yes. ]

Military...stuff?

[WHAT ELSE SHOULD HE HAVE BEEN DOING]

I've been scouting since I was little. After we moved to Keuruu and I was old enough, I started doing it for the military.

Military...stuff.

[ Yes, military stuff. Hibiki's eyes open wide upon hearing that...well, that's a surprising piece of information, to say the least. ]

I wouldn't have guessed that you're in the military.

[ At least he's not even trying to hide this. ]

Funnily enough, scouting happens to be one of my duties as well. It seems that we have a few things in common.

...I don't have a fancy rank or anything.

[He's not really sure how to take that... Careers in his world are split into military and academic, so hearing that he doesn't come off as military is...????? Maybe it was just that he was smaller, had that disheveled forest boy look about him like a proper Finn, and maybe that he found conversation oddly difficult. That had certainly set him aside from his peers, even the other scouts that were thin with their words.]

I guess. [Huh. He's found multiple people that have identified themselves as scouts. Neat?] What other stuff do you do, if you're not always scouting?

Isn't it necessary to establish some kind of a structure when making an organization...?

[ Thinking out loud here. Not that he has any experience in establishing these. ]

Ah, never mind. [ He's...trying so hard to have a nice conversation and where did this lead him. ] Well...mostly paperwork, especially if my superior is neglecting his own duties.

[ He sighs softly. ]

I'm sorry. Whenever I'm talking, it all eventually ends up being about work. And you probably don't want to discuss that.

There is a structure. I have a boss. I guess he's not my boss anymore? [Weird...to think about.] I'm just not that important.

It's okay. I miss my job. Emil thinks I'm weird because I want to work while we're here, but...

That's not weird at all. You're just responsible and you take your duties seriously.

Yeah. I couldn't find something exactly the same, but it's sort of close... It helps me stay doing stuff. I want to do stuff instead of sit there feeling scared because it's a weird place.

Doing...stuff...is unarguably better than doing absolutely nothing.

[ Although the majority would most likely opt for the latter. ]

Yes. Because of their gift-giving thing coming up, people have a lot of stuff they need delivered.

I shall try applying, then. It should allow me to get to know the city better, I suppose.
