mapping party mapping party

Who: a bunch of less-than-upstanding nerd boys
Where: along this route
When: Day 8, or thereabouts
Open/Closed: closed to mapping party; pm [personal profile] rebells if your character would have icly asked to come!

[So you may have gotten a telepathic message a few days ago about an expedition to map the coastline . . . or maybe you were invited along by a friend. Whatever the reason, it's bright and early this morning, and it's time to set out!

Characters would have gotten a further telepathic message from Jay with a date and time to meet outside the shacks. They'll be heading east along the "shore," tracking the coast, and then heading directly back towards base camp . . . who knows what they'll find along the way?]

There isn't always food.

[A moment's thought, he's summoned a fair amount of fridges at this point, honestly.]

Shoes. Combs. Stuffed animals, clothes. I think I saw a specimen jar...

[He didn't really want to look at that last one, honestly.]

I would've been into that, if you find another one.

[ DEAD THINGS IN JARS! ]

What kinda limits does the power have?

[Dave.......]

The specimen jar? The stuffed animals? You can help yourself, but they don't stay.

[Look, he has to make sure, Dave might have had to fight someone else for stuffed animals or something.]

I can summon three fridges. Most things disappear when I send one away, but eating still counts, I think.

The specimen jar. But they don't stay? So you gotta have the fridge stayed summoned as long as you want to make use of the stuff.
probablynoteren: (logic comes after e7 tbh)

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-07-26 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. What would you do with a specimen jar here?

[More curious than anything. They don't count as emergency rations, all things considered. Lenka do you really want to know about other people's weird hobbies, the answer is apparently an unthinking yes.]

Are you a scientist?

[Only crazy scientists are into specimen jars, right. Other than whoever that was on the mirror who wanted to eat organs....]

... The only way the specimen would stay is if you ate it. Probably.

[Just sayin'.]

Which is, like, not conducive to displayin' it, so. Yeah.

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-07-30 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Lenka just gives him a vaguely baffled sidelong glance, because he's still not sure why you'd want to display that (or who would even see it, given how much time (or lack thereof) they've spent in their huts so far. Some of them even less so than others. Anyway...).

By this time they're approaching the edge of the... chunk of ocean, as it were, and he directs his steps towards the edge of the beach, moving carefully. From his experience on the first day and night, the sand doesn't usually just give way straight to whatever is below it. But. They have no real idea what the bottom of the island looks like.

The ocean, though, just kind of... stops. If they crouch down and extend a hand, they can stick their hand kind of. Sideways into the water. Which is what Lenka's doing at the moment, looking increasingly confused.]

... Force field?

...Or like...just...maybe this is the portion of the ocean that was lifted up and so it just stayed that way? From wherever this island came from.

You summon fridges. I think we need to redefine how we expect stuff to work, probably?
probablynoteren: (logic comes after e7 tbh)

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-07-31 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
But... some stuff should still work the same.

[Sand works the same. The sky... no, never mind. Definitely never mind that part. The trees are still trees and boars are still edible and keel over if you drop refrigerators on them. That being said, the water sure isn't going anywhere -- even if he leans out over the edge of the sand bar, he can't see anything flowing down below...]

If it's not a force field, you'd fall through.

[Great for swimming, guys.]

Well, I think we mostly all still need to eat and stuff? As to fallin' through...I guess we could test it and maybe get tossed back, but.
probablynoteren: (why does he look 12 here)

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-07-31 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've met people who don't need to sleep. It's hard to tell. [the point is, they won't know without investigating, but--] But I think there's a better way to test it.

[He takes his hand out of the water and points down towards the bottom of the ocean chunk. There are places where the ocean floor is still attached, and places where it isn't. In quick succession, Lenka summons two refrigerators in either spot at a decent angle from where they are.

Waits.

1. Fridge #1 settles peacefully on the ocean floor, seemingly startling some fish. Or what look like fish, anyway.

2. Fridge #2 sinks placidly all the way down to the end of the ocean water -- and then just. Plunges into space. Soon enough, it's out of sight.]

[...]

[...]

No force field.

And we now know that whatever rockets us back here won't work on items?

[personal profile] probablynoteren 2017-08-01 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[It is a truly random power, but he is doing his best!!]

If it's magic, or something else, maybe it doesn't work on magical things... [he's mostly muttering to himself, still stretched over the side of the beach staring into the void] Or if there was a way to test it on us without jumping.

[He's not that invested in figuring this out. Also he is pretty sure jumping into space is not recommended for humans.]
