[So you may have gotten a telepathic message a few days ago about an expedition to map the coastline . . . or maybe you were invited along by a friend. Whatever the reason, it's bright and early this morning, and it's time to set out!

Characters would have gotten a further telepathic message from Jay with a date and time to meet outside the shacks. They'll be heading east along the "shore," tracking the coast, and then heading directly back towards base camp . . . who knows what they'll find along the way?]

I meant—[It's frustrating and he rubs at the back of his neck.] You don't like it when I talk to you and you don't like it when I don't. What am I supposed to do?

I didn't give an opinion on either option.

I don't got an opinion. I talk to people whenever they strike up a conversation.

[It is such a non-answer and it's frustrating Dirk badly. He doesn't understand what's happening. He doesn't get what Dave wants, but he has a feeling it isn't him. Staying steady, he keeps his hands in place, trying not to broadcast his distress and confusion, but he has never been good at lying.]

I am just asking whether or not you've... changed your mind. About trying, with me. Getting to know each other and shit. Is that still a thing?

[ it's...technically maybe still a thing, but without an impetus to see dirk on the regular dave simply does not seek him out. given a choice he'll look for rose or john, or any of the friends he's made here so far who are easy in their casual back and forth. ]

I've never not talked to you when you've started up a conversation.

[It's frustrating for Dirk, who keeps trying to have a casual back-and-forth, who keeps seeking banter and only gets brief answers and shut doors. Dave just doesn't seem to want to actually have any conversations whenever Dirk tries to bring up anything casual: music, science, art, the goddamned animals in Texas. Dirk tries to talk easy and Dave goes for abscond. So he struggles, trying to figure out where he is going wrong, trying to understand if maybe Dave is just trying to signal he wants Dirk to fuck off.

But Dave refuses to talk about that, either. Dirk knows he can't get an honest answer out of him. He's worse than Jake about it.]

[ he goes to say he has to find john, make sure he doesn't get jumped by a snake, but john's better than dave is and he knows it; still, he feels less awkward and unsure and on guard around his best friends, so that's probably where he's going to end up regardless. alone with dirk, serious and either too easy or too hard to read, dave doesn't feel remotely at ease. ]

I've got to... [ he just gestures towards wherever john is and trails off, starting in that direction. rose isn't an option to run away to just now and stay in orbit of. ]
