[It starts with a telepathic message over video, Jay using the mirror shard gifted by Genette to broadcast this message to the rest of the coven:]

It's come to our attention that some of you are going to want to help the Palai with their raid problem, so we thought--if we're going to be involved in this anyway, we might as well do it right. How about a meeting in front of our temporary home at noon? We'll discuss our strategy and assign roles. I'll broadcast it via this link, as well, for anyone who can't make it back in time. We welcome input from anyone who has a brain in their heads.

[If you come to the front of the house at the appointed time, you will indeed find Jay and Dirk standing together discussing--something, and perhaps a small crowd beginning to gather. This meeting will also be broadcast over the signets for anyone who wants to listen in there.]

Mm. I didn't get a terribly good look at them, but we were somewhat slower coming down through the water with the boat, so we got attacked a couple of times.

Violent, aren't they?

[He sighs.]

I don't suppose you tried talking to them.

Well, yelling at them to cut it out happened. Does that count?

[rebells]

Only if they responded. [A frown.] Did they seem sentient at all to you? Capable of being reasoned with?

[oneandmikleonly]

...it's hard to say, because our interaction with them was very brief and very hostile. They didn't really respond to us, and they were very quick to attack, like some of the fish, but that doesn't mean they're not sentient. It could simply be that they don't like unfamiliar creatures in their home territory, or they didn't understand us. We'll need a second, longer foray to find out.

[He nods in assent.]

The difficulty might be getting them in a situation where they're not liable to attack us.

[a snort of amusement]

I suppose with telepathy, we can at least start talking when we're still well, well, well out of range of their weaponry. Anybody told you they're a shieldmaker yet?

[rebells]

I'm told Haru can form barriers, although that's her Qri-given power, so I don't know how reliable it is yet.

[oneandmikleonly]

If she wants to come, it may be that will be a better backup against their weapons. I don't think they were using anything overly sophisticated.
