He used an artifact Jonathan was studying to become a vampire, and took Jonathan's body to survive for a century at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean when Jonathan had otherwise defeated him. When Dio gained a Stand, it was Jonathan's body that passed that on down the bloodline to the surviving members of my family.

When we fought on even footing, even Dio couldn't withstand one of Star Platinum's strongest punches, and he died in one hit.
