The Vanu Vanu people have a lord of the skies, a great white whale named Bismarck. He, as a primal, desires immense amounts of energy via crystals, and the floating islands themselves are loaded with them.

So, naturally, he liked to nibble on the land and scare the Vanu Vanu witless, all while they presume he does it to punish them for their transgressions.
